Shouldn't you be in your tent by now? Did your cabin leaders approve you being out this late? Anyway, it's dark here in the mountains already but the little party around the campfire is going strong. For a while now, people have been using the light from the fire to shape the shadows on a nearby cliff into the silhouette of a mythical monster that is rumoured to live in these very mountains. What do you think it looks like?

💡How it workss

Shine a light on your hands, random objects, or a combination of both to create the shadow of any real or imaginary animal/monster! Tip for those using their hands: The timer function on your camera may prove useful.

Take pictures of the shadow and the items you used to create it (along with your username), write a few sentences about your creature and post it for credit.

💡How to submitt

Submit your entry by posting it in this thread by 6:59pm EDT on August 22nd.

💡Ruless

  • Entries without a written description will not be accepted.
  • Things already resembling a creature (such as figurines, statues, or plushies) should not make up the main part of your entry.
  • Flat paper/cardboard cutouts are not allowed at all.
  • All entries must include both a shadow and the setup used to achieve it. This may be done in either one or two pictures.
  • Your TBT username MUST be visible in at least one of your pictures.
  • A reasonable amount of effort should be put into your submission. Those that appear rushed or submitted jokingly will not be accepted
  • Only one shadow may be submitted per individual - no collaborations!
  • Entries are not allowed to be edited once they have been posted.
  • Keep all shadows suitable for a PG-13 audience.

💡How to votee

The cabin favourites are entirely community-decided. To vote, simply leave a reaction on the post of any entry. You can use either the Like or Love reaction, they will be added together. Entries that are approved will be marked by the staff with the accepted reaction, but don't wait for this to appear. Feel free to Like/Love any entries at any time!

While you can react to any entry, favourites will be decided only by votes from members of the same cabin.

💡Prizess

20 Mountain Tokens and 20 points for your accepted entry (you may enter once).
In addition, if your cabin submits at least 10 different creatures, 100 points will be awarded to the cabin.

The top 3 cabin favourites will earn an additional 8 Mountain Tokens. The top 1 will also receive a Rainbow Jellyfish Collectible.

💡Submission checklistt

Before submitting your entry to this thread, make sure that:

☑ At least one of your pictures includes your TBT username
☑ You are not only showing your creature, but also your setup (multiple pictures allowed)
☑ You wrote a short description for your animal/creature
🛑 Your entry does not contain flat paper cutouts at all.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Is there any limit to the amount of items/lights used?
You may use as many items as you need!

Can we use coloured lights for our light source?
This is allowed.

Is it allowed to have the backdrop contain elements of the creature?
No. Please create your shadow on a clean, even surface.

Are we allowed to use plushies in non-conventional ways for aspects of our creature's form?
This will be allowed if the plushies are not recognisable in the shadow. On the other hand, if for example someone were to use a teddy bear to make a bear-like outline, it would not be accepted.

Mountain Dear

Majestic and found in many different eco-systems including the mountains, the wild deer is one of my favourite animals to encounter on a camping trip. My user name got covered by my hand shadow but it is still there in marker on the cardboard. I took the photo using my phone torch and laptop.

🐻 Ferocious Bear 🐻

Bears are genuinely one of the few things I’m scared of during camping. I thought I would try to recreate that terror with my stuffed animals taped together, fork tops, weird cat paw things for arms, an eraser for the ear, skin products for legs, a container with more fork pieces for the mouth. You can’t say I’m not creative, lol. I took this with my phone, and used my bfs phone for the light hehe.

Bulbous Beast
The bulbous beast is a sad & diseased mammal. You're not sure if you should be sorry for, or afraid of it. One thing's for sure, it's probably best to avoid.

I attached a pin cushion, cat-shaped pin, and air plant to a flamingo-shaped pen. A christmas tree-shaped pin makes it's nose, while twine forms a tongue.

how scary! we came across this figure while hiking on the mountain!
oh my! what large a antenna it has!.....and are those spider eggs hanging off it????
it looks so tall......yikes! also? is it t-posing?!? it kinda looks like a person going
through a really bad hair day to be honest.

to make my mountain monster i used my fake "house" plant (get it? bc it's house shaped 😅),
two straws that i used at the top and cut off the ends to tape onto the hands, two spoons, an
empty planter for the base, an old christmas lights necklace, a lot of tape and a empty strawberry
jam jar! i used my desk lap and led lights to help create a shadow and atmosphere!

The Lake Monster

20210816_185601.jpg

Campers, don't go near the lake at night...or during the day for that matter. If you see a large shadow in the water, that is no whale. No, campers, we are in the mountains! What you see is the Lake Monster. Swimming gracefully under the water, when you see its shadow in the depths, you might not make it out alive. For if you get too close, it will pull you under!

20210816_185638.jpg
I I made the Lake Monster out of a large plantain, cut off a part of a banana for the "fins" and attached the "fins" and the body with a toothpick. The painted blue background was an aesthetic touch.

The Wingless Hangry Bee-Geebus
tbt_shadow_creature_1_by_valzed_depc0xp-pre.jpg

This fearsome creature can be found crawling in flower patches looking for food. It is always hungry which makes it angry. It will attack anything or anyone that dares harm any of nature's pollinators. It has no love of humans and has been known to attack them without cause. It is a ferocious fiend.

I
I created The Wingless Hangry Bee-Geebus using a pair of scissors, two pens, two pieces of clear tape & a dragon scale bag that I crocheted last year.

Well, here's mine:

An evil poliwag like creature has been lurking in the ocean! Whatever you do, don't go swimming tonight! Even kapp'n has been pleading and begging to be in another area, all because of this monster. No one knows where it came from, no one knows how or why, but officials recommend you don't look at it, especially when it cries.

This poliwag creature is made up of a shower poof thingy, a pair of scissors, and a pen and a colored pencil=the deformed monster poliwag

a fish

This fish can be found lurking on the surfaces of any body of water. Don’t be fooled by its delicate flowing fins, this beast is a predator and will most likely mug you. Stay safe homies 😔

i went to town with some tinfoil and used some dried up lens wipes for flair lmao

Spooky bat 🦇
They fly around looking for food in the dark with their membranous skin stretched over bone makes me think of monsters. I’ve always been scared that they’ll fly towards me and get stuck in my hair. Although they’re cute and a very important part of our ecosystem; I’d much rather enjoy them from a distance and not at night in the dark *shivers*

The Ravenous Cur

Around these parts, folks tell tales of a vicious beast known to pick off campers who wander off too far by themselves at night. Some say the creature is a cross between a wild boar and a jackal, while others claim its a hellhound straight from the fiery pits. However, all the reports share one thing in common. According to legend, if you encounter this fearsome creature, the last thing you will ever see is a pair of flaming crimson eyes boring into your very soul before you are torn away from the light, never to be seen again.

So be wary, dear campers, and remember to always use the buddy system. We wouldn't want you to become the next victim.

Okay kids, gather around, lil’ ol’ Skar’s got a story to tell.

So once upon a time in these treacherous areas, there lived not just the creatures of the wild land, but a walking sea creature as well... it’s three times the size of me — would you imagine — and it lurked in the forest shadows, waiting to grab its prey with its multiple arms before engulfing you whole into its slimy, acidic body. No one knows what it truly was, but it was in the shape of a transparent jellyfish... So transparent, in fact, that some people swore they saw remnants of its prey floating inside its body. So beware, kids, and don’t follow any stray ropes around, lest you end up being entangled yourself...

Okay, that‘s it from your friendly camper Skar! I hope you have a good night now!

A Bird on a Branch (With a Really Long Tail)
Screen Shot 2021-08-20 at 8.50.09 AM.png

This lovely bird, who was born with a really long tail (longer than it's size itself) needed a rest from flying. It saw a spectacular branch and perched upon it. It was a thing of legends, of beauty and life, and was elusive to most birdwatchers. It is said that birdwatchers are still looking for it. Will it ever be found? That is up to fate to decide.

(Side note: I am wearing a beige colored shirt, it sort of blended in with my skin tone in this picture... Just setting that straight LOL)

I've found the Snow Witch! She may be evil, but gosh darn it, she's also fashionable! She lives high up in the snowy mountains and adorns herself in the finest coats of the innocent creatures that live in the surrounding area. Be careful, I heard she's looking for a new coat, or a pet! And you could be a good candidate for either D: Stay far away!
