Honestly after they've said that you won't be able to like summon the villager you want with amiibo anymore or at all (they've said this on the Treehouse live segment) I think it will just be simple gifts like with many other games now.

In my eyes this makes sense as crafting materials would be perfect rewards for scanning amiibo, as well as bells and maybe some Nook Miles?

I'm wondering what that would mean though for villagers that can only be summoned through the Welcome Amiibo cards as well as the Sanrio villagers.

There's also the villagers that only come from amiibo figures. I've got one of those Japan-only Monster Hunter amiibo so I could get Felyne.

I honestly don't expect Felyne to be back, but I hope he is.

I dunno I feel like there is a chance that the amiibo exclusive villagers will be removed. But who knows, maybe you can get them through special means in the game? They hinted that there is in fact a way to influence which villager is moving in next. It won't be as easy as plainly choosing which one you want they said, but maybe this means that there is something in game that lets you contact the themed villagers?

Wait, did they? I watched the whole E3 Treehouse and don't recall amiibo being mentioned at all o.o

I read that Kyogoku said in an interview we wouldn't be able to invite any particular animal to the Island, but that statement could just be about the game's regular method of gaining villagers, and still leave room for inviting animals through amiibo.

Without the elaboration her statement would have led a lot of people to believe picking-and-choosing animals was in the base mechanics of the game - I can see why they wanted to dissuade that thought.

I'm wondering what that would mean though for villagers that can only be summoned through the Welcome Amiibo cards as well as the Sanrio villagers.

I'm less sure that the Sanrio animals will be returning, but think it's fairly likely that the WA ones will either be added to the overall villager pool, or be accessible through the cards after all.

They didn't mention amiibo, I didn't mean to say that. But they did say that there is no way to summon certain villagers you want. There will be some kind of other way to invite new villagers and influence who they are but you can't outright select which one you want.

So this means that amiibo also won't work the way it did in New Leaf naturally.

EDIT:
The way I worded it in the first post was a bit unclear but yeah they didn't mention amiibo during the live segment. It's just that they said that it isn't possible so that means amiibo won't change that.

I definitely read that as them mentioning amiibo, so thanks for the clarification.

For now I'm still holding on to my interpretation (which leaves room for amiibo summons) until we hear more.

That's fair, who knows. Only time will tell. There's always the possibility that it was translated inaccurately.

that was expected but it's too bad for everyone who has collected a bunch of amiibos and amiibo cards for them to not be able to summon villagers through them like in new leaf. i wonder how it will impact villager selling, some people are probably going to have cycle towns but idk. i wonder if there will be other ways to get specific villagers or if it will be just inviting them or through luck.

That would suck if we couldn't invite an amiibo to move in.

I don't have the patience to cycle through hundreds of animals until the ones I want appear wherever they do in the game.

I don't know why people keep insisting that there will be villager cuts. We are coming from a 3DS game that had 380+ villagers if you count WA and special villagers to a Switch game on far superior hardware. New Horizons doesn’t even look like it'll be that graphic heavy anyway, even though I think everyone looks great and I'm digging the art style.

They treat all of the villagers the same in Pocket Camp. We have WA ones released with regular ones. I think they’ll graduate into the regular and randomized pool of villagers in New Horizons. As for amiibo functionality, either we’ll have use of the older cards, or we will get a new series of AC: New Horizons cards, or both work. Figures will also work as well.

This premise of villagers getting cut and WA villagers remaining exclusive or whatever is mind-boggling to me.

Not that I inherently disagree, but they did just announce that Sword and Shield will have a vastly reduced number of obtainable Pok?mon.
Of course those two games aren't that comparable because AC reuses the same species' models and doesn't require nearly as many separate animations, but there could always be other reasons to cut numbers/features.

I agree that there's no reason to worry much though, and especially none to assume it'll inevitably happen.
If anything I'd be more concerned that they won't add enough new animals, or barely expand on their dialogue and behavior.

I wouldn't go ahead and compare this with Sword and Shield. The Sword and Shield problem is kinda
more complicated, as GameFreak doesn't even care to look for the option to add the missing Pokemon
via updates or DLCs in the future to the games, which fans doesn't understand of how stubborn they
are. So, even if not all villagers are available at the beginning, they could always add them later with
updates or DLCs and I'm pretty sure the creators of AC would use this option and aren't as stubborn
as GameFreak.

Alternative, it could also be that Switch can handle all villagers and they are all here from the start.
After all, the game got delayed because they want to make it the best and I'm sure they taking also
care of the villagers.

As for the amiibo situation, I would be kinda sad if the special villagers stay New Leaf exclusive. As
for now, I think they will coming back. Otherwise, I will just wait till they explain it more in detail of
how you can use amiibos now in this game.
