Switch cloud saves unsupported in New Horizons

Expected. Not the end of the world, though it would suck if something happened to your save file resulting in no way to recover it.

Man, that really sucks to hear. :( Other people cheating in their own towns doesn't ruin the game for anyone else. Who cares if some people want to max out their bell limit day one or whatever? Why does everyone have to be punished for that?

The fact that saves are stored locally on the Switch rather than an external cartridge makes me feel a bit more worried about my save data.

It is nice that they at least implemented a save transferring system that works incredibly smooth, though.

i figured this was the case since its the same with pokemon. still worrying? very much so!

I really hope this is either incorrect or that they'll change their mind within the next 9 months, because games you put 100+ hours into, that don't have competitive multiplayer, are the main reason you want to be able to back-up your save games. Sigh, how can preventing cheating in a mostly single-player, non competitive game, be more important than giving 99% of the people who play your game without cheating some peace of mind.

Yep, not surprised. Pokemon duplication is the excuse they give for no cloud saves for Pokemon, so not wanting item duplication in AC makes sense. People will find ways to duplicate and/or hack regardless, though. They always do.

This makes me happy and a little sad. Happy because they are trying to find ways to prevent hackers from coming into your town and destroying it, at least I think that's what they are trying to do? I don't know. I've heard one too many horror stories of people unexpectedly coming into your town and then just hacking it to the point you can't play and have to start all over again. I fear this big time. Also, not been a fan of duplicate items.

Sad because I want to keep my town from day one and if something happens to my Switch, I can no longer play in that original town, or island. I guess I'll just have to be careful with my Switch. Also, if I offended anyone by the happy part, sorry about that. I'm a little fearful of playing with others online right now. :/

So some people even said they will ban time traveling. Like is that true? We need someone who understands french... The game will be SO great, no doubt. But all this stuff like only one island, (maybe) no Time traveling, no backup just destroys it. They force us to play it like they want it and that sucks... and who cares if someone cheats in their town. I always REALLY enjoyed hacked towns of others.

The time travel rumor started because of us finding out about auto-saves. Nintendo hasn't said anything about banning time traveling, and I honestly don't see them doing that. You could still TT even if auto-save existed. Not sure why people are freaking out so much about an unfounded rumor.

But for the cheating thing, Nintendo REALLY hates hackers and cheats. They've been going out of their way to try to make their consoles harder to hack. Though, like I said, people end up finding ways eventually anyway. When games don't have the ability to cloud save on the Switch, it's always for reason of trying to prevent duplication. What they are afraid of is you basically being able to duplicate your save file and then get duplicated items thanks to that.

I've read the article and it doesn't exactly talk about time traveling much, it certainly doesn't state that it is banned.

They say that there are no cloud saves to avoid time manipulating because 'time' as a concept is essential to Animal Crossing.
Related to that, the paragraph above talks about how they are trying to see how to accommodate to different lifestyles (and thus different times when people have time to play e.g. school vs work) but they don't want to give too much control because the link to real-life time is too essential to the concept of Animal Crossing.

i really dont get why they care about a handful of people duplicating items rather then everyone having a save space for their town

[...]
That really does blow that cloud saves aren?t supported (I guess I?ll have to mod my switch if that doesn?t change before then)

Same here. I'm lucky to have one of the old models, so I guess I will go the same route. Maybe something will change with the one year anniversary of Switch Online.

I'm not sure about the 'time manipulation' argument they used to not support cloud saves. If that also means that Time travelling is unavailable then what if you're playing the game in one timezone but you move to a different timezone? The only way to match up the times to real life, the concept of AC that they are fighting for by not having cloud saves, is through the methods of time travelling. So in the end, what even is the point?

It's ridiculous to not provide cloud saving for a game whose developers claim they want players to play for years. A dozen of things could go wrong. Putting save backups behind a pay wall and then not even providing it for games that really need it is absurd and a bit scummy. If anything I'm sure this will encourage many people to seek out home brew just so they can backup their town. I know I will, at least.

Life happens! Machines break, get stolen, get damaged due to mother nature and the list goes on.

If Nintendo thinks their machines are immune to parts malfunction they really need to remove their head from the clouds (okay no pun intended) Your consoles are no different than a phone, tablet computer etc...

I do hope/pray/wish they will come up with alternative ways for us to save our game.

While it sucks that we're pretty much heck'd if something goes wrong in our system, and thankfully the Switch is built very well so its unlikely to happen to us, I do understand why they went this route.

While I do understand a lot of people like manipulating their games, I don't think this is the main reason for them doing it. They definitely want to prevent duplication of items.
