What is it about the holiday season that makes it feel so magical? For many of us it is the warm and cosy atmosphere that we create with flickering candles, steaming mugs of hot chocolate, and twinkling lights on strings. The festive season has become competitive over the years: everyone strives to have the biggest tree, the flashiest decorations, and the most ornate light show. Then there are the presents! What do you buy for someone who has everything? This year we are taking it back to the basics and want to see something handmade.

How to Participate

This is a winter holiday arts and craft event broken down into two rounds. Round One will run December 14th-19th and Round Two will run December 20th-24th. Your task is to create a winter holiday themed drawing or craft project relating to that round's prompt.

Current Round

Round Two is currently live. The task for December 20th-24th is to design a winter holiday card to be sold on your Animal Crossing: New Horizon's island!

The minimum expectation is for each user to submit a front cover for their card, but if your design requires opening to feel complete (e.g. gimmicks, punchlines) then you may also wish to include the interior. You may draw your submission physically or digitally and you are welcome to use craft supplies (e.g. pompoms, pipe cleaners, glitter, sequins, etc).

For presentation purposes you may also wish to photograph your card standing upright. Digital submissions may be printed for this purpose, but please note that we would also require you to submit your digital drawing as proof you designed it and both parts would need a medium-appropriate name card included (digital for digital submissions; physical for physical submissions). Building on your printed digital submission with craft supples is also acceptable.

Rules

  • Entries must be your own work and you must make everything yourself.
  • You can use craft supplies but cannot use other people's work or any other pre-made components.
  • Entries must fit a winter holiday theme: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, etc.
  • No collaborative projects.
  • Submissions can be hand drawn, digital, or crafted.
  • Animations, videos, etc are not accepted.
  • A reasonable amount of effort should be put into your creations. Submissions that appear rushed or made as a joke won't be accepted.
  • All entries submitted are final. Please do not edit your entry after submission unless asked to by a staff member.
  • Your username must be visible somewhere in your submission.
  • Keep all creations appropriate for a PG-13 audience.

How to Submit

Submit your entry for Round One by posting it in this thread by 11:59pm EST on December 19th, 2020. Your TBT username must be visible somewhere in the image, either on a name card or in the case of digital artwork written directly on the image.

Round Schedule

Round One: December 14th 2020 - December 19th 2020
Round Two: December 20th 2020 - December 24th 2020

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need to physically craft my ornament?
A. Nope, a drawing is absolutely fine!

Q. What counts as an ornament?
A. This can be a standing ornament, something you hang on a wall, a Christmas tree decoration, etc.

Q. I'm not sure if my idea will be accepted. Should I make it and then submit it anyway?
A. If you're unsure if your idea counts please do not hesitate to contact the host and ask - doodles to help them visualise your idea are helpful!

Q. Does my entry need to be specific to Christmas?
A. You can theme your entry to any winter holiday or simply winter itself.

Q. What if I don't have an ACNH island for Round 2?
A. Are you hoping to receive a Nintendo Switch and ACNH over the winter break? You may use your potential ideas for that island in your winter holiday card. No interest in ACNH, but still play ACNL? You may use your ACNL town as your prompt instead.

I just bought an iPad and Apple Pencil for working on my research and it's great that I get the chance to use it for art so soon!

I decided to draw an ornament inspired by the northern lights near a snowy mountainside and dense forest. I had to feature bunnies in it bc bubs.

so i tried really hard at a bunch of different origami stuff, but i suck at it, so here is my attempted origami snowflake, turned into festive spiderweb, animal crossing themed. i promise this was meant to be a pretty snowflake for my wall

I wanted to try something a little different than drawing, so I MacGyver'd this Animal Crossing balloon ornament together. I didn't have any ribbon, so I cut out red felt strips. I didn't have any glue, so I used tape. I found a plain red ornament and thought it would make for a good balloon for this. Other materials used were cardboard, paper, twine, and an ornament hook. I don't have a tree big enough to hang it from so I just hung it where I could. I hope that's ok!

Hi! Unfortunately I'm not able to accept this due to the use of the red bauble. If you could please resubmit with either a different material used for the balloon, or just the present box on its own, I would be able to accept it then. 🎅

Hi there! I'm unable to accept this entry due to containing an element you did not draw yourself, specifically the image of Maple. We are also looking for users to put a little more effort than this into their submissions. If you would like to try again I am happy to give you another chance to submit an entry for this round. 🎅
