As the title states, you don't have to have a reason why but if you do I'd love to know why you rate them as your favourites. I'm kinda looking for horror film recommendations through this for my movie night tonight, but wanted to make it more of a discussable topic, so shoot!

As an ex-horror hound, I would have to go with the following in no particular order, though I have yet to see any movie that scares me:

- John Carpenter's The Thing
- Stephen King's IT (The original television broadcast miniseries)
- An American Werewolf in London
- The Shining
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)

I'm not a big horror buff, mostly because the movies don't scare me and I get bored when they are all jump-scares and gore. But I do really love a few.

- Child's Play (because Chucky is cute!)
- Misery (my favorite Stephen King movie)
- The Fall of the House of Usher (Poe and Vincent Price are an amazing combination)
- Amityville Horror
- The Bad Seed

Conjuring
Annabelle
All the Jigsaw & Saw films
Insidious (First one is the best)
Paranormal activity (terrifies me every time)

Happy Death day and Carrie are two of the most awful films, I really can't recommend them. Surprised I even sat through them to the end.

Alien (1979)
The Thing (1982)
The Fly (1986)
Event Horizon (1997)
Train to Busan (2016)

Generally I like atmospheric horror movies, where the tension is built up slowly, instead of throwing jump scares in my face from the get-go. A good story is great; a happy ending is unnecessary. These movies entertained me and bear repeated viewings.

Horror movies are something I've watched since I was a kid. I don't get scared anymore. But I still really appreciate a well-made horror film that has a good, well-paced story and believable characters I can root for.

The Shining
The Return of the Living Dead
Suspiria (1977, but I also like the 2018 one)
Green Room
Hereditary

These are my all-time favorites. Solid 5 Stars, 12/10 highly recommended.

Honorable mentions:
- The Others
- Thir13en Ghosts
- The Cabin in the Woods

The Shining
Night of the Living Dead
Let The Right One In
Psycho
Misery

Those are just the first five that came to mind.

I'm kind of a wuss when it comes to horror. However, I do love a good ghost story and in general, I prefer stories that have more psychological fear than lots of gore. So here are some ones I really enjoy:

- The Others: Nicole Kidman is really good and the story is great
- Let the Right One In: Really sad and beautiful - the original is better than the American remake
- Blackcoat's Daughter: this one stayed with me long after I watched it. Weird casting decision in one part of the movie but otherwise cool indie horror
- Jacob's Ladder: vintage horror with a really interesting story
- The Shining: I doubt you missed this one but I think it's one of the finest examples of horror

Bonus:
- The Ritual: I really liked this movie even though I'm not sure if I consider it top 5 - but it's hard for me to rank movies so I'll keep it here! ;)
