New Bugs and Fish in July for North Hemisphere! (Sea Creatures Guide Added!)

Wait, cicadas are coming? Welp, now I have to endure their annoying noise throughout the whole summer and perhaps into fall even. If more beetles are returning, that's going to invoke nostalgia for me that I spent so many hours catching them on Tortimer Island back in New Leaf! I wonder if the spawn rate is the same... If it is, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo nerfed it soon.

Are there different pun messages for the new bugs depending on the weather? It’s raining in my island and several of the cicadas have puns when caught that are directly related to it raining and wouldn’t make sense if it was sunny and dry outside

Saw both the napoleonfish and a whale shark near each other and I can safely say that it appears the shark shadows are entirely unique. They're "fatter" than a size 5 (sea bass shadow), but seem to be shorter than a size 6 (huge shadow).

Thank you for the very useful chart! Gonna start the bug hunt later today.

I've picked up Wild World again lately and gotta say I'm surprised at the difference in volume between the cicadas in both games. I was expecting to be serenaded as soon as I walked out the door on Espera this morning, but no, they're actually relatively quiet.

There's also a chirp that's different from in past games - I think it's the giant cicada's? I wonder why they changed it?

Really? What did they say? It’s not raining at my island so it would be neat to compare. If they are different, I wonder why it’s unique like the squid.

Thank you for the guide. The official guide has an error for the walking stick. It lists 11pm to 4am and 4 pm to 5pm.

One said something like “I guess it’s not singing in the rain,” forgot what the other one said, but I think giant’s was something about how you could still see it in the rain? Brown cicada didn’t change for the weather (I don’t think— it was about how they’re now blue) but giant and one other (either robust or evening) did— it’s past 5 and not raining now, so I can’t check

Oh wow, it’s kind of shocking that even the official guide book has false info. Just caught one not that long ago, 4am - 8am & 5pm - 7pm is the correct time. I’m glad that this post is helping to correct some confusions out there though.

Here's a little guide that might help others in beetle hunting and farming:

I recommend going to mystery islands. Chop all the trees and dig them up. Pick all the flowers (no need to dig). Since you are left with coconut trees, beetles will be forced to spawn rather than cicadas. Just do laps around the island.

I did this twice. Once at 6AM-8AM, then again from 5PM-9PM. Yes, I have too much time on my hands. 🙃

Tiger beetles, earth-boring dung beetles and some butterflies will still spawn. Just catch them to increase chances of palm tree spawns. Also, look both the rivers and the sea. It took a while but this is how I managed to catch all the new fish and bugs immediately.

Is it better to go to a mystery island with fish bait to hunt marlins and napoleons?
Napoleons might work - there are big fish islands you can get that might help increase the chances. Marlins if I'm not mistaken are pier fish only (only spawn next to the dock on your island) so you wouldn't be able to get them on mystery islands.

The sunfish are insane— by far the tallest thing we can catch (so far?). Was not expecting that at all!

You can get dock fish on mystery islands, just on the dock you land/leave on and both corners behind it

Yes. Thirty minutes ago I caught the napoleon on a mystery island. Three players caught the marlins during a mystery tour from the dock a few months ago. No bait used.

thanks for letting me know, now just need to look up the times on the napoleon, i remember the marlin is all the time

Got the Napoleon and Sunfish from an island tour. I had less luck in finding the rarer beetles.

Has anyone seen a Cicada Shell on a palm tree or are they only on normal trees like the cicadas?

The ACNH.Guide app says they're only found on cedar/hardwood. I believe I got mine on a cedar. I have yet to see one on a palm tree.
