Nintendo Switch 2 Direct kicks off at 9:00 (EST), 6:00 (PT), 15:00 (CET) on April 2, 2025

The only thing I didn't care about was playing with your friends while they play different games from you (with camera + speaker). Like, I'm someone who plays alone, especially when it's something I want to give all of my focus to and not Ryan yapping away about what he did today.

More power to those who can sit though that.

I still hate the name (why not Super Switch or another nostalgic name), but it makes me wonder if that's just it. The Switch will stay the main console like the PlayStation and we will see a Switch 5 in like a decade or two.

I do miss the foldable handheld that kinda protected itself. I hope the Switch 3 or 4 tries to be a laptop type.

i’m on the fence about buying this at launch for similar reasons to others. the price is higher than i expected, and it doesn’t even include the new camera peripheral.

mario kart world looks pretty cool but idk if others noticed that there were only 7 cups instead of the standard 8 from past games. sure there’s other features but i found that to be .. a continuation of nintendos money grabbing tactics. i’m sure paid dlc will be released that introduces more cups.

anyways, i think holding off on buying until there’s a title i’m *really* interested in. like a new animal crossing or pikmin title, but i think it will be a while given how recent(ish) both released.

There may be a third party shell lid thing in the future? I like stuff like that for protection, but I don't like duel screens (I know a lot of people like duel screens). But, unless the market dramatically changes in the future, I don't foresee a big system have duel screens because of cost. (I know you didn't any anything about duel screens, it's just additional thoughts of mine)

It was a fun Direct!

✅
  • New Donkey Kong!
  • GameCube game availability (Colosseum!!) I'm hopeful they'll add Animal Crossing for the GameCube at some point
  • Mario Kart 9 looks great. I used to 'make-believe' my own open world in Double Dash, so the fact that this officially exists with an open world to explore is a fun idea alongside the usual cups/races
  • Deltarune Chapter 3+4. I wasn't expecting this and haven't played chapters 1+2 myself, but I enjoy watching them
  • Storage space upgrades, 120fps
❌
  • GameChat is not for me, but some of the features look neat. An additional camera peripheral is...no ty
  • Paid tech demo?
  • Nintendo Switch 2 game editions are kinda eh for me. It feels like the Sims expansion/Game Pack model
  • Mouse controls. I'm not a fan of 'gimmick' control schemes
Like a few others have mentioned, I don't think I'll be preordering for launch. Maybe around holiday 2025 or sometime next year. I'm excited for the possibilities, though!

The new Mario kart looks pretty fun, I'm not sure about all of the new chat features though. That screen sharing looked really laggy. I probably won't buy a camera either. The Mario party jamboree mini games that use the camera remind me a lot of PS2 Eye toy, it really doesn't seem very innovative to me. The new From soft game looks great, and I'm excited for Kirby Air riders.
The GameCube virtual console selection looks pretty promising, especially Luigi's Mansion, Pokémon Coliseum and Pokemon XD, I really hope they add Animal Crossing GameCube and Smash Bros Melee. The new donkey Kong game also looks really fun.

  • Paid tech demo?
I actually laughed out loud when they said it was paid, it's like they're trying to copy Playstation's Astro's Playroom but they forgot that the original tech demo version was free.

Ok so I am seeing some talk that digital games will be $80 USD and physical $90 USD?? Can anyone confirm with a reliable source?
This unfortunately seems true, at least for Mario Kart. Near the bottom here:

I see the $80 but is the $90 just assumed from retailers?

i was underwhelmed lol. the only game that i remember being interested in was MK9 and even that is... idk, i don't hate it but i don't love it either. might have been another game, too, but it clearly didn't interest me enough to remember it lmao.

i said in another thread i was likely to buy it just because my switch lite is borked and i want to get back into playing my current switch games, but that is definitely not worth £400, i think it was. (or a little more with MK9.) might make more sense to just buy a second lite secondhand lol and wait until there's a new AC game or something because not even pokemon ZA is calling to me much at all anymore, let alone for that price.

i don't have the funds to grab it or anything else right now but i am excited to see gamecube coming to the switch 2 and the controller too. hopefully they add the original animal crossing later, that would be the dreammmmm. the zelda game looks interesting. i just skimmed through the vid so i may have missed some things.

I'm really happy to see that dk & air ride are back, but besides that i wasn't too all that impressed, especially with the prices :(
there's no way i'm getting it on release, i'll probably wait to see what the new kirby & animal crossing games look like. they'd have to be really good to justify having to buy new sd cards too.

it's good that we got to see more of layton but 5 seconds, really? looking forward to when it releases this year nonetheless :D

While I am thinking about replacing my Switch with the Switch 2 at some point (especially for the memory upgrade), I think I might wait a bit. There were some things I was excited about, but not enough to justify the price. I can just play the new Deltarune chapters on my regular Switch!

I also don't care much for the video chat tbh. That might just be because I don't do much multiplayer, though.

Plus the fact it seems like for some games you don't even have the choice to stick with the NS version, you have to buy the NS2 upgrade packs?

Overall I'm intrigued by some of the games, I obviously love the quirky additions to the MK roster and the DK game. However the Mario party 'upgrade' literally doesn't appeal to me whatsoever, and the price for the console is STEEP. I'm glad to hear that Scarlet and Violet at least is getting a free upgrade.

tbh i wasn't paying too much attention to that part, since none of the games getting upgrades are in my library. i thought the (rumored?) price to upgrade them seemed a little steep though for what you're getting.

I was under the impression it wasn't a have to. But you will if you want to do the virtual game card thing. I don't know if you would have to for multi player stuff. Game share, which is different than virtual game cards and multi player connection doesn't need to be between the same system to work, but it is limited games on game share.

I wasn’t coming at this with high expectations, but I’m feeling pretty bummed. I was amazed to see that almost the entire announcement trailer for their brand new console focused on non-Nintendo games. ????

The new Mario Kart looks AMAZING and I can’t wait to play it. Truly such an exciting opener. (Moo Moo!) Other than that……I have thought Two Point Museum looked really fun, so it was nice to see a couple seconds of announcement that it’s going to come to Switch 2. That does imply that this console will be able to play more games originally developed for PC because it will have more processing power and because of the joycon-mouse. That seems promising!

The new Donkey Kong is, uh, not my favorite. I really dislike the art style and the heavy lean on slapstick humor instead of gameplay, plus the traditional sexist character designs. That was the one Nintendo title announced today, minus Mario Kart: Kirby Edition. I certainly didn’t expect a lengthy wishlist, but I really did think they’d announce at least one thing I could get hyped about. Instead, there was a lot of focus on gritty combat-based third-party games. This felt like a regular direct, and a direct from later in the console’s lifespan with fewer Nintendo games, at that.

For the first time in my life, I’m in a financial position to buy a console at release. But I still might not do it.
