Now that we've reached (or almost reached) all announced updates so faar... What next?

New items are cool, but I'd love to see additional features added first. I'd also love to see numerous QOL changes, but Nintendo has had a year to fix some of the top requested ones and hasn't, so we will likely never see them.

I'm hoping to see
Museum expansion.
this would house the Roost with Brewster or maybe an observatory with permanent residence for Celeste. (And to be clear, she will only give DIYs on nights she wanders town). The current museum exterior is looking ugly to me. So im dying to see a new design.

Nook's Cranny expansion.
This could possibly host permanent residence for Leif so we have access to his shop every day. It would be cool to have this shop stay open until 11pm. If we ever get ceiling furniture, this would be the best way to introduce it. Also, the store interior is ugly. Need something prettier.

Club LOL.
This will likely never return, but it would be a dream come true to have island rave parties 6 nights a week like in New Leaf.

Tortimer Island.
We need an always summer island to escape the snow. Sadly, I don't see Kapp'n returning. The Pier looks like it's made for catching rare fish. If there is a Tortimer Island, it makes more sense that the Dodo Airlines takes us there like with Harv's island.

Last but not least....Mainland CITY!

We need to have a City Folk like city we go to. This would be the perfect place to store the Roost, Club LOL, and introduce Lyle and Lottie with the HRA. We may even meet Cooper and Booker here....AND!!!! Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete

I feel like at minimum we're going to have an update in late March to turn on the Bunny Day event for 2021, maybe slightly re-tooled based on some criticism it received during the first iteration in 2020, possibly with a couple new items so people don't automatically skip over it if they've already done it in 2020. After that...I don't really know, tbh. I know the ideal scenario is a major update to the game for the one-year anniversary with a lot of changes (i.e. upgraded Nook's Cranny, more NPCs, more villagers, more furniture, more QoL updates), but I feel like the more likely scenario is that this theoretical "major update" is broken into chunks and gradually released throughout 2021, since it makes it easier to release updates with new content every 1-2 months to keep people engaged and playing NH throughout the year, rather than dumping everything they have on us at once and not having any update for a long time after that.

Regardless of what happens, I have no real expectations, tbh, so I'm just gonna enjoy the ride and see where it takes us.

Considering the Nintendo Twitter account has completely rebranded for Splatoon 3, the latest update trailer had no future announced updates, and progress has been slow even when this game had Nintendo's full attention... expecting anything more than "nothing" will be disappointing. There will be an update I'm sure, but timelines are completely out the window now. We know nothing.

I no longer assume this game will be finished, receive Brewster, or anything else. I am done pretending otherwise. Save yourself the heartache.

The Nintendo developers are moving on to the next game. The money has to be invested in something to be profitable and they have decided that is not New Horizons. Any updates of serious significance will be paid DLC now and won't arrive for a year or two. The most you can expect are updates that patch Bunny Day to work in 2021 (it doesn't right now, btw), and a few other adjustments to holidays. Nothing you want or care about will come for free.

They have different teams working on different games. They didn't shelve Animal Crossing for Splatoon. And it ain't like they were going to put all development of New games on hold while they build Animal Crossing for the next few years. The development team for Animal Crossing will continue working on it. The April update trailer from 2020 didn't announce a date for the next update. So we were left in the dark once before.

My guess is that the next big update will be one you have to pay for since they only promised a year of free updates but I hope I'm wrong.
I want some QoL updates and the ability to sell my entire island for bells but keep my catalog just like in New Leaf. Since we can only keep one island at a time per switch, I would really love to have that feature.

I hope you’re wrong too because this will just end up turning more people away from the game for sure. NH is getting enough bashing from the community as is, especially from long time lovers of the franchise. Asking them for more money for stuff that should’ve been in the base game in the first place will just open the floodgates of hell.
I really hope not... That could be disappointing to me as i am really loving animal crossing. I think more than pokemon. Granted i have been drifting from pokemon..
Even as someone new to AC im not even sure id pay dlc for this game. I love new horizons and spend lots of time on it but im not wanting to pay dcl every year unless there is some good game content (not just items). I guess price would play a part too. Id probably wait to hear what others have to say about it who bought the dlc. Then again.... Nintendo doesnt seem to be pushing much out that catches my interest for other games anyway... Or i dont care for thier direction. Which is why i was considering going to a tablet after the switch era ends.
I really really like animal crossing though...

You know that's not how game developing works, right? Although it hasn't been confirmed by Nintendo themselves, Splatoon 3 has probably been in development since late 2019/early 2020:

In order to celebrate 2020, the Splatoon social media posted that little image which contains the hidden message "S.O.S. = Save Our Salmons". Lo and behold, Splatoon 3 trailer opens with the main character having a lil' salmonid by their side. So they were planning and developing the sequel at least from that date.

I'm not saying that confirms more updates or whatever for NH, just that it isn't how you think it is. But in the end I mean, go for doom and gloom as much as you like, I guess.

Well considering splatoon 3 was announced today, and a lot of the core animal crossing devs worked on splatoon 1 and 2, I'm gonna assume they're also mainly going to be working on splatoon 3 from now on and any updates we get from now on are gonna be meh (not that they haven't already been meh, and this announcement to me explained why they've been meh... because the devs have been working on splatoon lol).

Hope I'm proven wrong and they add significant updates, like a lot more items, more NPCs, more villagers, some stabilization for the horrible lag, etc. But I've basically given up at this point and I've only played like once a month since October now :( really disappointed with the game now that it's been one year out from release tbh

I am a software engineer myself who manages multiple projects and I am a technical lead where I work. I understand that Splatoon 3 development has been in the works for a long time prior to this announcement. The announcement of Splatoon 3 revealed why most of the updates up to this point have been lackluster as well--the development team's efforts have clearly been split between ACNH and Splatoon 3. The announcement today however is not promising for New Horizons no matter how you slice it. I have refrained from expressing my concerns publicly about this game achieving feature parity with New Leaf for a long time now but I am growing concerned enough to speak out now.

I love Animal Crossing. It is the most important franchise to me that Nintendo offers. But I would be remiss to not express deep concern for the future of this game at this point. The good news is, I have a horrendous track record for predictions. Consider it a blessing that I am being so negative--it means this year will be packed with updates.

Next update... Bunny Day 2.0 (please let it not be this but I think it will be since it's about that time of year)
Personally though... I just want Leif to have a shop like the old days man. Since Leif was introduced around Easter maybe he'll get an update too. (I can only dream though)

Ok, I guess I just think it's not surprising; Splatoon 3 being revealed today doesn't change anything for me, as I had thought it was kind of obvious. I wouldn't call the updates "lackluster" so far, but to each its own, everyone views things differently.

March 10 - Mario Day (Mar10 Day): The Mario stuff will probably release earlier, but who knows?

March 17 - Shamrock Day: Maybe we'll see four leaf clovers scattered around on the ground, and you have to pick them up and trade them in order to get the Shamrock hat, Shamrock coat, Shamrock pants, and Shamrock shoes. I don't know. I'm just guessing this might be the case. 🤷‍♂️

The President of Nintendo has already stated that we'll receive regular updates throughout 2021, and an even earlier interview with one of the developers suggested that ACNH will be supported for around 2-3 years. Since the Splatoon and AC team are almost one and the same (likely much larger now than when Splatoon 2 dropped, however) yeah a good chunk of time is going to be spent on Splatoon 3, but I think that's fine considering the core of ACNH is done, and a lot of the additional features we've been waiting for are already present in the games code. This pretty much just leaves them to add in more items over time, and finish up on the remaining mechanics or whatever they've had planned since launch whether that's new buildings, new villagers, etc.

Nintendo's pacing for releasing new content has always been bad, which is what concerns me the most as unlike last year where we had major Holiday's to go off of as far as when to expect new updates to drop, this year we really don't have the same type of indication. Sure they could revamp all of the Holiday's, but I'm not really expecting any changes outside of more items to be added to collect for those holiday's.

i want them to finish the game.

Honestly this. I want us to be brought closer to feature parity with New Leaf. Even if it means at this point I have to buy it.

I agree - and as someone who is also an engineer with directing experience, and considering that we are getting a new Pro version of the Switch and likely a new platform eventually, well... from here on out there will be a "caretaker" team giving us shiny trinkets for New Horizons as the core team moves to new projects and eventually/potentially the next iteration of Animal Crossing on a new platform. I'd say that after a year living and breathing this game, we are where we are, and if we want to be somewhere else or with new features, it's going to be in a new game.

i think, idk lol, i know nintendo are rereleasing the cards but i'm not sure if it's in all shops or just the nintendo website

but i got all 6 cards last year specifically to use in NH, which was pretty annoying for me when they weren't in it
since they're releasing them again, i don't see why they shouldn't be added

i just really want chai, etoile and chelsea 💕
and wolf link ofc
chai and tia are amazing, i would add them to my town purely for the reason that they match istg
and yeah they're being rereleased in the us (idk about the uk and europe srry guys) at target.

I want small quality of life changes, like being able to craft multiple items at once (I might actually craft bait more often if it wasn't so tedious). Also would love if you could just use your house storage to craft stuff without it needing to be in your inventory.
A fast forward or skip dialogue option; I don't even bother with Gulliver when I see him coz it takes forever to get past all his dialogue. Don't get me started on Pave 😂

Rugs outside!!!

I would love more villagers on my island; If I never have a second+ human why not let me have another animal in their place?.

I want more buildings; Leif living on your island would make the most sense. You could have Reese and Cyrus selling exclusive colour schemes/crafting materials, DIYS etc.

Fianlly after the Mario update, I would love to see Zelda get some love. A Korok forest with the master sword and botw blue flowers would be amazing.
