I enjoyed Gen 6 when they came out when I was in my younger teen years, but having replayed them recently I’ve come to a conclusion that they’re incredibly sub par games. The director of those games (can’t remember his name) made them purposefully easy because he thinks that kids only care about mobile games these days.
Kalos lacks in memorable locations and characters other than Lumiose City, which even then is likely the most confusing location in any Pok?mon game. While ORAS was the stronger of the gen 6 games, they lacked the charm that the original games had and isn’t the promised definitive Hoenn experience unlike Emerald. It’s a bit of a slap to the face, too, given that HGSS is considered the best game by many Pok?mon fans that the next remake felt like a downgrade.
Gen 5 has the most compelling Gym leaders, best rivals (Hugh was kinda dumb though), a story that actually makes the bad guy team and the Pok?mon league important plot points, and overall my favorite designs for the Pok?mon yet having fully animated sprites.
Everything about the Gen 5 games just feels like the definitive Pok?mon games to me. I can’t say much about Gen 7 since I never had the money to be able to purchase S/M, but from what I’ve heard it suffers from it’s own issues.
