Pokémon Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield General Discussion

To those who didn’t like Gen 7, I actually liked the 7th generation. I actually did. It was the generation that got me into Pok?mon. But I understand why people don’t like it.

I think both Gen 7 (and Gen 5 for that matter) get a bad rap, overall. My main issue is that, at times, it didn't feel like there was enough to do in USUM. There was some really neat new Pokemon (Oricorio is easily one of my favorite birds), and the ultra wormholes are fun to explore, but overall the game felt barren at times. I'm certainly hoping there are a bunch of features to play around with in Sword/Shield.

One thing I was hoping that they will do in a new Pok?mon game, which I doubt will happen, is to change the story around. Other than the new mechanics, features, Pok?mon, and characters introduced over the years, the story has been practically the same. You get a starter, battle gym leaders, stop the villain team, beat the Elite Four, then done. The story was well overdone. Heck, even the Mario games aren’t as repetitive in story even when the princess gets kidnapped all the time.

One thing I did like about USUM was that the main antagonist was not a human character, but a Pok?mon. That was pretty new for a Pok?mon game.

i think this game looks interesting!! i love the rural aesthetics but rip scotland being just snowy mountains LOL i’m loving the memes so far (probably a bit more than what we’ve seen of the game) however the only thing that’s bothering me is the football theme, part of the trailer had the player walking into a stadium in football gear which gave me the BIGGEST eyeroll - england arent even good at football!! cricket and rugby is our specialties lol, i don’t really mind it’s just a bit weird seeing it in a pokemon game

Nothing has gotten me too hype yet since we've only seen a little bit so far, but I'm really liking the starters (Grookey!!!) and the setting is a nice change from the usual tropical/island feel. I think the countryside is an awesome idea and I'm hoping the Gen 8 pokemon look awesome since I wasn't really a big fan of Gen 7 and the Alolan forms tbh, which is why I never finished Sun/Moon rip.

I've been waiting to buy a Switch just for this, but I'd want to know a little more first.

Like is that annoying Roto Dex going to be there. I currently play Ultra Sun with the bottom screen blocked, as it's like receiving a neverending fax and it affects my eyes. It wouldn't be possible to block it on a Switch.

I did like what I saw though.

Not too keen on the gyms returning.
I liked the trials a lot more.

wait, usual?

kinda curious what other regions fall into this for you, since only alola gave me this sort of vibe

Hoenn is also a tropical region. It's not played up quite as much as Alola, but it is still very much so if you pay attention. If you take that into account the last Pokemon game we had with a region that wasn't tropical was X/Y in 2013.

so wait, does this mean gen7 was your introduction to the franchise? (in terms of actually playing the games I mean, hard to not know of its existence by this point)

oh yeah

tbh I kind of tend to ignore remake regions, but I can see how that would qualify too

but even then, that's still basically just 2 out of 8 regions (obv ignoring spinoffs and colo/xd here)

also holy wow, is xy really that old?

It may be two out of eight regions, but every other region is temperate, which would make another tropical region stick out like a sore thumb, especially with the context I gave above. Going from Alola to another tropical region would have been really annoying.

I mean if there were regions representing Canada, Greenland, Scandinavia, Russia, etc. thrown into the mix then there would be some balance, but we don't get that... We just get temperate and tropical.

And yes X/Y is that old. The 3DS is also eight years old now. It is hard to believe, but here we are.

Even though I never played a main Pok?mon game until Sun and Moon’s release, I knew about Pok?mon before the turn of the millennium. I even had a few Pok?mon toys back when I was in the first grade (1999-2000). And while I didn’t play the main games, I played mostly the spin-offs, like Pok?mon Stadium and Pok?mon Snap. I couldn’t get interested into the main games until 2016.

And if you want to know how I knew about the older games, I read about the history of the gameplay changes (like when TMs started having unlimited uses in Gen V or when Gen III introduced natures).

giant defog mountain sinnoh would like a word with you

and tbh, I do feel that focusing solely on the climate for the regions isn't a super good way to approach them. though I do agree that having another tropical region wouldn't be very good (in this sense, oras was just rather unfortunate timing)

tbh I'd kinda consider the stadium games pseudo-mainline, given they follow the same battle system (and iirc even fixing up some glitches present in the gen1/2 games)

also, this is completely random, but gen2 special split and gen4 moves being categorized as phys/special/status by how they work as opposed to typing have been probably the most notable changes for me

and part of me does kinda want you to try out some of the older titles, just for your thoughts on, but hey

I mean they have done minor things to mix stuff up here and there, but def no overhaul

gen1 had the champion twist
gen2 had the entire kanto postgame and red battle
gen3 had the rival villain teams
gen4 had the gts (I actually do not remember gen4 at all)
gen5 had the main plot reach its climax and conclusion at the very end without you even becoming the champion. also, child abuse
gen5.2 had the best battle bgm whole sequel aspect going for it (gen2 did this too of course, but it hardly cares at all about the events of the previous gen beyond giovanni disbanding team rocket)
gen6 had genocide
gen7 had I need to play gen7 still

Honestly, ugly. The character models are really ugly to me. The guy looks like every Pok?mon guy ever and the girl just looks like a cheap copy and paste of the Pok?mon Sun and Moon protagonist. Though the region looks really nice.

I'm just gonna say that if there's no character customization, I'm out. I already hate the female protagonist and I probably couldn't bear staring at her for the entire game.

How couldn’t they have character customization. Since they introduced this in Gen VI, taking it out would be a downgrade.

But I do hope that character customization is different to what we had in Let’s Go Pikachu/Let’s Go Eevee. That wasn’t even really character customization. That’s just different skins of the same outfit.

yeah, that part was def a huge turn-off for me with the games

(also, lack of customization is a huge part of why I've yet to get oras)

What do people mean when they talk about wanting the new game to appeal to "hardcore" players rather than casuals? Because to me, Pokemon has gotten more complex as the games evolve. I've played every game, and I do think gym battles and trainers have gotten easier, but like with breeding and stats/natures, IVs/EVs. I don't do any of that stuff because it seems complicated. So to me, I've always considered that stuff more "hardcore" because I guess I see it as requiring more dedication and know how. I also don't play online competitively so I've always considered myself to be casual.
So I guess mostly what I'm asking is, are you guys referring to the story mode being more difficult, or something more to do with competitive gameplay? Like, what are you looking for in a Pokemon game geared for the hardcore fans?

The new game looks really cool~Course we have only seen a glance so we shall see.

With the starters, I can't even tell who I will pick, I'll wait till the evolutions are found out. But I don't mind them, most of them do look similar to other starters but sometimes can't be helped when they wanted to have a certain animal for a certain type.

But other than that it all looks really nice, I just dunno who will be the badies in the game?
I love the house the character walks out from and the players look really adorable.

I've played for quite a while and still dont really understand IV's/EV's myself. I find it time consuming just dealing with getting the eggd moves I want on my pokemon~

the most important takeaway for ivs is obtaining perfect iv mons involves lots of luck and/or inbreeding

or hacking, of course

Overall, I'm pretty jazzed!

The protags look cool, and I can't wait to know how extensive the character customization will be! I'm hoping for more skin tones, more vibrant hair/eye color choices, and maybe some longer hair styles. Personally, my hair is past my butt, to about the middle/lower half of my thigh and I think that really long hair styles would be cool!

The region looks really cool. Kinda rustic and I love it a lot. The architecture is so pretty to me. Also the wheat field is cute. I hope this alludes to berry farming similar to X and Y. I really loved the in-game berry farm as opposed to the poke pelago system in Gen 7 in the drop down menu. I would love to see poke pelago, but where you can actually visit the island instead!

I feel like my opinion on the starters was a little harsh at first. First thing that came to my mind was digimon. I thought they looked really generic. But now after thinking about it, thats kind of the whole reason why I really like them now ^^' Despite my initial thoughts, they are cute and very charming. Sobble is my personal favorite, he is so timid and shy...absolutely adorable. Also I love lizards, geckos, salamanders, snakes ect. so he was right up my alley! Grookey and Scorbunny are very cute as well. However, I can totally see Scorbunny has the potential to end up becoming a fire-fighting type...Game Freak, I swear on my frickin nan.....I would like to see him maybe becoming Fire-Electric? Kind of like the energizer bunny, since he looks really speedy and lively.

With the new platform and no longer being tied down to the capabilities of the 3DS, I think this game will be a beautiful experience both for veterans and new players alike. I just hope they up the difficulty a teeny tiny bit! The past few pokemon games felt a little bit too easy in terms of breeding, berry farming, money making ect. I have high hopes for this game.

Hyper Training was also introduced in Gen 7. It allows for level 100 Pok?mon to increase their IVs (technically the IVs themselves aren't changed but the game acts as if they are).
