Sanrio Villagers... Almost Confirmed?

In recent data dumps we've seen villager photos for every villager. There is also a villager list text file that contains the Sanrio villagers. In the game's files, there are villager photo files for the Sanrio villagers... but the frames are actually empty!

The name of this file is BromideNpcNmlGor11. The naming format of these photos adheres to the villager list found here: Pastebin. If you look up Gor11 in the Pastebin, you can see it maps to villager name Rilla. So Nintendo has prepared Sanrio villagers in the villager list, and has created empty frames for them, but they have not actually inserted them into the game yet. These empty frames exist for each of the 6 Sanrio villagers.

What this likely means is that the Sanrio villagers will be added at a later date. Here is a higher quality empty frame for your viewing enjoyment!

Let’s not forgot adding villagers as well as big game changing features (Such as Harvey and his campground) through updates is something Nintendo played with at the end of New Leaf. Maybe this was a testing zone to see how it would be received and from my perspective; it went good!

this is good news! i liked to imagine merengue and chai as good friends, they were super cute together in my new leaf town, it would be nice to reunite them again in new horizons

This could also potentially mean new villagers could also be added, as assets are there to be used. Could definitely see e+ and entirely new villagers appear later on in the year!

I don’t care much for the Sanrio designs, but I know they’re some of people’s favorites. Seems like nobody will have to miss out on their Dreamies! ^ｪ^

(Might also mean that I can trade/sell my Chelsea card to someone wanting her ingame rather than purely for collecting’s sake)

Not sure if this confirms they will be back, theres most likely rights issues they would need to re-sort out since the original deal most likely carried over to New Leaf alone. I see this as more of a future proof-ing just in case type of thing.

This could very well be the case, although I feel like if they didn't have any plans to make a new deal, they wouldn't have included them in the villagers list or added empty pictures for them. If I had to guess, I would say they're in the process of making the new deal, but it isn't ready for launch.

I actually saw the pictures you’re talking about, and they aren’t of the Sanrio villagers themselves. One of them has Timmy and Tommy on them; They’re just Sanrio themed.

If scanning the cards just gives you those posters, I’m starting to doubt the Sanrio villagers will be in it. It’s unlikely they’ll change what the cards do.
