The "I learned something new today!" Thread

I saw on Instagram that the beginning of this song sounds like RuPaul is singing it. (Especially with the “long long legs” line. 😂)

I learned from a Sakura Stardust video that “chigyu” is a common Internet insult in Japan. It means someone looks like they eat chigyu (cheese beef bowl) and are therefore a nerd. The connection is still shaky to me, but it’s interesting.

Interesting. I tried to look up the origin, but it really doesn't seem like there is one. I guess they just hate cheese 🧀 But most stereotypes have shaky connections as they are.

I also read that it means they're "childish", so maybe cheesy beef bowls are like what Gordon Ramsay calls "nursery food?" I also read that during a livestream of a Puyo Puyo championship, a video game producer said the competitors looked like they ate chigyu, and then Sega cut out that part of the livestream.

I learned that this little guy is called a Golden-crowned kinglet. (was in my yard this morning, but pic not mine)

That solid black wooly bears were not a variation of banded wooly bears like I thought, but another caterpillar altogether—the caterpillar form of the giant leopard moth!! They're absolutely gorgeous too, I've never seen one as a moth, but I'd really love to ;w; Apparently while they live about two years, only about a week of that is spent as an adult, so there's a pretty narrow window to spot them in their moth stage.

Look at those colors!!

I learned this a few days ago but kept forgetting to post it, but apparently the ocean isn’t blue because of the sky, but it’s because of something that has to do with how water absorbs light. I feel so stupid for thinking it was because of the sky reflecting off the water for so many years lol.

Why, it might sound silly for native English speakers, but I learned that you don't say "I look forward to meet you" but instead "I look forward to meeting you".
I've also heard of the word gerund for the first time in my 12+ years of speaking English. The more you know!

So before he became U.S. president, Ronald Reagan was a Hollywood actor... (learned from @/chocovelvetcake, who brought this up in another thread)

Random funny fact I learned in band class yesterday.

Beethoven made Fur Elise because he wanted to use it to win over a woman, but she was terrible at piano, so he made it easy for the first half. Then he showed the unfinished piece to her and asked if she wanted to get with him, and she said no. So he finished the song and made the last half incredibly hard so she wouldn’t be able to play it. That is the pettiest thing I’ve ever heard lmao.
