The "I learned something new today!" Thread

I learned that Margaret Hamilton (who played the original Wicked Witch of the West) was a kindergarten and Sunday school teacher. This definitely came in handy when she guest starred on Sesame Street!

The Louisiana state flag has no right being this cute.

When flight attendants do the two-finger points, that means they’re showing where the exits are. (I heard it was a common gesture along them and didn’t know what it meant. I was also daydreaming about a female pro wrestling tag team with a fake TSA agent and flight attendant doing those points. Weird gimmick, I know lol.)

A man (Michael Paredes) died after completing one of the obstacle courses on Wipeout. He went into cardiac arrest.

This happened in 2020, so not that long ago. I don’t remember hearing about this when it happened, but when I was younger I used to be a big fan of Wipeout and even had the Wii game! Unfortunately, it’s sad but not surprising that someone passed away after an intense course. (due to medical issues)

Daylight savings time is confusing even to those of us who live with it sometimes. You shouldn't feel dumb at all.

Terry the Dog (who played Toto in the “Wizard of Oz”) was paid more than some of the movie’s human actors.

She was also a female— I guess since Toto was a boy, I assumed the actual dog was, too.

I know Charles II of Spain (the one with the big jaw) kept disabled people as “palace freaks”. One was Eugenia Martínez Vallejo. She was a girl whose obesity is now thought to be caused by Prader-Willi Syndrome. Although she got to stay in a palace, she was known as “the monster” her entire life. She even appears to be crying in a nude portrait.

What I DIDN’T know, is that in 1997, a statue of Eugenia was erected in Aviles, Spain. This is a way to honor her, I think, and give her the respect she was denied in life.

Guatemala has three Olympic medals in total-- two in shooting, and one in walking. (1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.) While they regularly compete in the summer Olympics, country only competed in one winter Olympics-- 1988.
