Pokémon The Pokémon Challenge Thread

Bumping this thread because I decided to start a Pokemon Yellow (3DS VC version) Nuzlocke. I'm just using the basic Nuzlocke rules of a Pokemon is dead if they faint, you must nickname it, and you can only catch 1 Pokemon per area (and it has to be the first new one you see). This is my first Nuzlocke so I don't want to get more complicated than that. I literally just started this tonight and am playing right now. My crew so far is:

- Sparkster (Pikachu)
- Tomato (Pidgey) from Route 1
- Mindthief (Rattata) from Route 2

Tomato was level 2 when I got him (argh) so it was so touch and go to level him up for the first few levels. I actually had a battle where he got down to 1HP. That was terrifying.

Awesome! I love the virtual console Pokémon games on the 3DS! I’ve been thinking about starting a Gold, Silver, or Crystal Nuzlocke myself. Feel free to continue posting your updates here, and welcome to the challenge show!

I got everyone to level 11 and faced off with Brock. My team was:

- Sparkster (Pikachu)
- Tomato (Pidgey) from Route 1
- Mindthief (Rattata) from Route 2
- Spike (Nidoran M) from Route 22
- Pea Soup (Metapod -> Butterfree) from Viridian Forest

The plan was to have Pea Soup Harden 5 times, use a potion, and then use Confusion. No problem with Geodude. It was going well with Onix, but then Onix used Bide. I thought I could beat Onix before Bide kicked in but no. Mindthief finished off Onix's last 1/4 of HP by using Tail Whip a few times to lower defense and then used Quick Attack a few times.

Goodbye, Pea Soup. You were the MVP in the Brock match. You will be missed.

Omg... RIP Pea Soup. Sounds like Pea Soup was a pretty good Pokémon. Congrats on getting your first badge though!

I think I’m going to take out my 3DS, redownload Gold, Silver, and Crystal, and start a Pokémon Crystal Nuzlocke soon!

EDIT: Started a Pokémon Crystal Nuzlocke challenge!

Started out on my adventure and chose the female player, Kris, naming her Riley. The last digit on my trainer ID was a 1, and the last Nuzlocke challenge I won with a grass starter, so I opted for Chikorita at Professor Elm’s lab. Chikorita also happened to be a female, so I nicknamed her Rikka from the anime Love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions. Will be naming the rest of my captures after popular anime characters. I went through the first route and grinded Rikka to level 10, and then made it to Cherrygrove City, saved, and turned the game off for now. When I next play I’ll be heading to Violet City, home of the first gym badge.

Good luck on your challenge! I'm looking forward to hearing how things go for you. I've seen some of that anime! Curious to hear what you decide to name the rest of your Pokemon along the way.

I don't have any particular scheme. The first idea that comes to mind is what I happen to name them.

Here's another update:

New Pokemon: Birb (Spearow) from Route 3, Sonar (Zubat) from Mt Moon, Banana (Mankey) from Route 4, Dino (Bulbasaur) in-game gift

Mt. Moon was rough, ngl. I got Birb right before it, then Sonar was my Pokemon for that area. I REALLY wanted a Geodude, but apparently it was not meant to be. I ended up just running from every Geodude that showed up. There's a single trainer in Mt. Moon that has rock Pokemon and I had decided early on to fight every single trainer for experience gaining reasons. Spike (Nidoran M) really helped me out with that trainer because he has Double Kick. Double Kick being the only good move my entire team had against rock made me miss Pea Soup even more. Pea Soup would've made Mt. Moon less of a hassle.

I have not had any more deaths, but I came close a LOT. I also have been using potions and walking back to Pokemon Centers way more than I would in a normal playthrough. I've found that I'm also using status effect-type moves way more than I normally would just to try to prevent deaths. It's been interesting to see the differences.

I've now gotten to Cerulean City. Since I now have more than 6 Pokemon, here is my current team:

Banana (Mankey) lv 10
Mindthief (Rattata) lv15
Spike (Nidoran M) lv 15
Sparkster (Pikachu) lv 14
Birb (Spearow) lv 14
Dino (Bulbasaur) lv10

I fought a few trainers on Nugget Bridge (Route 24) but it was a bit rough. Gonna get everyone to level 15 minimum before I continue on.

I was really lucky to get Spike. Nidoking can end up being a powerhouse by late game. I would love for Spike to be one of my team members whenever I get to the Elite 4. Hopefully I can keep him alive until then.

Thank you! Good luck on yours as well.

I made it through route 30 and met up with Mr. Pokémon. While there I got the Pokédex from Professor Oak. Went back to Cherrygrove City and easily beat my rival. I then made it back to New Bark Town and named my Rival as Samuel to the officer. Went back and made it all the way to route 31, where I caught a first encounter male Spinarak. Decided to nickname it Rui after Rui of the Twelve Kizuki in Demon Slayer/Kimetsu no Yaiba. Since he’s spider-like as well, it works well. From there I grinded levels for Rui until he was level twelve, the same level as my starter. Continued to face trainers while prioritizing Rikka until I made it to Violet City. There I took on the Sprout Tower, and after defeating the top guy there, Rikka evolved into a Bayleef. Took on the Violet City gym and powered my way through with Rikka. Falkner was easy to beat since I poisoned his Pidgeotto and then kept whacking at it until it fell, giving him no room to breathe. I won and obtained the Zephyr badge. Next up I’ll be heading to Azalea Town, home of the second gym badge.

Are you going to keep up with a smaller but higher leveled team? I've personally never tried that in Pokemon before. It would probably be a lot of fun. It actually would make it so you have less grinding to do, as all of the experience goes to the smaller set of Pokemon. I love RPGs but grinding in them does get so old.

I didn't get too much farther since I posted last night. Needed to do some grinding because I was struggling against some trainers. Will post an update probably later today when I have something more substantial to say.

Nah, I plan on going for a full team of six. I just haven’t visited enough places yet to fill out my team. Also, sounds good! I’m currently in the Ruins of Alph.

Sparkster (Pikachu) died thanks to a Team Rocket trainer's Drowzee and psychic Pokemon being OP in Gen 1. And you know what happens next? Misty. ARGH! WHY?! It's even more annoying when I don't have access to any other electric Pokemon right now.

I now need to really get Dino (Bulbasaur - now evolved into Ivysaur) up to a nice high level because, honestly, Misty's Starmie is terrifying. I have Broccoli (Bellsprout), my Route 24 Pokemon, and Crabgrass (Oddish), my Route 25 Pokemon. But I don't think it's worth the time to raise up multiple grass types when I won't even keep them in my team long term. I see their existance as backups in case bad things happen and somebody dies.

Smol update on my Pokémon Crystal Nuzlocke challenge (even though I don’t have my second gym badge yet).

I went on to route 32 and caught a first encounter Ekans, which I nicknamed Orochimaru, one of the main villains in Naruto. From there I grinded levels for it, and then Asta the Togepi hatched from his egg. Unfortunately, while I was training Asta I made the mistake of using Metronome twice and he used Harden and then Explosion.

So yeah, that happened...

Anyway, I continued down route 32 while battling trainers and made it to Union Cave. While there I caught a first encounter Sandshrew, which I nicknamed Gaara from Naruto as well. Grinded levels for him back on route 31, and then made it to route 33, where I caught a first encounter Rattata, which I nicknamed Hamtaro. Made it to Azalea Town, but I went back to route 31 to grind levels for Hamtaro. I would have a full team right now if I hadn’t used Metronome with Asta, but I learned my lesson there. Next I’ll be making sure my team is ready and then taking on the second gym in Azalea Town.

(Side note, but I find it interesting how my starter is my only female Pokémon when Chikorita has a lower chance of being female, and the rest of my team is male)

I finished grinding levels and then took on Team Rocket in Azalea Town and easily defeated them. Then I took on the gym there and had some close calls, but won with no deaths. From there I beat my rival again, and then went through Ilex Forest. My first encounter on route 34 was a female Hoothoot, which I caught and nicknamed Tatsumaki after Tatsumaki from One Punch Man due to psychic powers, the ability to fly, etc. Beat the rest of the trainers and made it to Goldenrod City. Did everything there including battling the underground trainers, and then grinded levels for my team again. Everyone evolved into their final forms (except for Rikka of course). I then took on the Goldenrod City gym and beat the trainers easily. Took on Whitney, and things were going well, but I made a fatal mistake. I got distracted and when it was time to switch to Hamtaro for her Miltank, I accidentally stayed in. I did switch out after that and fought hard, but Whitney’s Miltank’s Rollout move took out Hamtaro before I could finish her Miltank off. RIP Hamtaro. I switched into Gaara then and put my foot down, taking out her Miltank with consecutive Scratches since Rollout isn’t very effective against Gaara. Won the gym badge, but at the cost of having a full party. Next I’ll be heading on to route 35 and making my way to Ecruteak City, home of the fourth gym badge.

It seems my challenge companion DJStarstryker has vanished for a bit. Hope you’re doing okay.

My first encounter on route 35 ended up being a male Drowzee, which I nicknamed Mob from Mob Psycho 100 due to his psychic powers in the show. From there I made it to the National Park. Then I went on to route 36, and on route 37 I caught a first encounter female Growlithe, which I nicknamed Hibana from Fire Force. I then made it to Ecruteak City, but even after doing everything there wasn’t ready for the gym yet, so I explored the surrounding routes as far as I could. All the way to the edge of Mahogany Town to the edge of Olivine City. My team got stronger and eventually Mob evolved into a Hypno. During this time I caught a Pidgeotto, which I nicknamed Hawks from My Hero Academia, and a Chinchou at Olivine Harbor, nicknaming it Kaminari, also from My Hero Academia. Decided to swap out Rui for Kaminari as I really need someone who can use the move Surf, and the Chinchou/Lanturn line is really versatile type wise. I finally went back to Ecruteak City and faced Morty’s gym. Ended up OHKO’ing every Pokémon thanks to Mob and his Confusion move, except for Morty’s Gengar, which got two shotted. Earned my fourth gym badge. Next I’ll be grinding levels for Kaminari to get him up to speed, and then heading towards Cianwood City across the sea, home of the fifth gym badge.

Grinded levels for Kaminari and he evolved into a Lanturn. I also got a fire stone from Schoolboy Alan, so Hibana evolved into an Arcanine. Went across the sea while battling trainers and everyone got stronger. I then made it to Cianwood City, picked up the medicine, and fought Eusine in battle. Beat him easily and then faced the Cianwood Gym. Beat the trainers there by prioritizing using Tatsumaki and Mob. I then challenged the gym leader, Chuck, in battle and beat him thanks to Tatsumaki, Kaminari, and Mob. Kaminari hurt his Poliwrath before falling asleep, and Mob dodged the DynamicPunch to deliver a Confusion as a finishing blow. Earned my fifth gym badge and can fly to places now thanks to Tatsumaki. When I next play I’ll be heading inside the Olivine Gym to take it on and the gym leader, Jasmine. Gaara and Hibana are the lowest leveled right now, but that’s okay because they’ll get some good work in on this gym.

Took care of the Olivine Gym and beat Jasmine, the leader. It was a bit difficult since my Pokémon were underleveled, but I spammed Dig on her Steelix with Gaara to win. Earned my sixth gym badge. Then I flew to Mahogany Town and went to the Lake of Rage. I had already beat all the trainers here, so all I had to do was take care of the shiny Gyarados using Kaminari. Then I met Lance, who wanted to investigate the souvenir shop in Mahogany Town with me. Went there and stormed the Team Rocket base with him, taking out every Rocket Grunt and Executive. Lance gave me the HM for Whirlpool. I then faced the Mahogany gym and easily beat Pryce using Rikka, Kaminari, and Hibana. Earned my seventh gym badge. When I next play I’ll be going inside the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City to take care of Team Rocket once and for all. And then head to Blackthorn City, home of the eighth gym badge.

I've been watching some people do Nuzlockes on twitch recently, and really want to try one myself. I have a link for the specific nuzlocke I wanna try, but where do I go to download the software to play it on? I also use a Macbook pro, hopefully this isn't a problem (since I know a lot of gaming stuff uses windows)?

What kind of Nuzlocke are you trying to do? Depending on what it is, you’ll probably have to use an emulator for it if you don’t already have the game. I don’t know too much about emulating games, so I’m not the person to ask about that. I usually just use whichever game I have at the time, like I did with my Pokémon Shield Nuzlocke and now with my Pokémon Crystal Vritual Console Nuzlocke.

I was thinking about doing the Radical Red Nuzlocke, which is a rom hack so it requires an emulator. But since I don't know much about emulators either, I might just Nuzlocke one of the other older games I have instead.

A lot happened. I took care of Team Rocket once and for all, and my party got stronger in the process. Then I headed towards Blackthorn City, and Rikka evolved into a Meganium, making my team fully evolved and complete. Made it to Blackthorn City and then proceeded to grind levels like crazy, until everyone was level 40. Then I explored the rest of Dark Cave and got the items from there. During this time I encountered a first encounter Gligar on route 45, which I nicknamed Kiki after Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service. Took on the Blackthorn City Gym and won. For Clair, I used Mob’s Hypnosis and then Ice Punch on each of her Dragonairs. For her Kingdra, I switched into Kaminari and paralyzed it with Thunder Wave. Then I continued to chip away with Spark and finally won. Entered the Dragon’s Den and beat the trainers there. Acquired the gym badge and gift Dratini, but unfortunately the Dratini wasn’t my first encounter there, so I can’t use it. Next I’ll be going back and exploring some places, and then head east to the Pokémon League where the elite four and champion await!

I explored more places such as the Whirl Islands and Mt. Mortar. Then I headed east towards the Pokémon League, battling trainers as I went. Made it to Victory Road and beat my rival again as well. I then made it to the Indigo Plateau. I thought about grinding more levels and raising my Pokémon more, but ultimately decided that would be a waste of time. We were ready. After buying a ton of full restores, we went in. I easily dispatched each of the elite four by switching out a lot and hitting all of their Pokémon with super effective moves, despite being underleveled at times. I then faced Lance and took care of his Gyarados with Kaminari. Took care of his Dragonites with Mob and the move Ice Punch. Then I took care of his Aerodactyl with Kaminari as well. Took out his toughest Dragonite with a critical hit Ice Punch from Mob. Lastly, I finished off his Charizard with Kaminari.

By defeating Lance, I became the champion and won the challenge. I did it! I beat two Nuzlocke challenges in a row, one in Pokémon Shield and then one in Pokémon Crystal. I’m so happy and excited about this right now. I don’t know when the next time I do another challenge will be, but I’ll be sure to post about it here. Feel free to continue posting about your challenges here, and remember, go beyond! Plus ultra!

Gotta say, I'm not on TBT loads atm but when I am I always come on this thread just to check how your nuzlockes and stuff are going. Keep it up man haha
