Pokémon The Pokémon Challenge Thread

I'm currently in the middle of attempting my first nuzlocke ever :) its pokemon sapphire aka the first pokemon game I played.

I picked mudkip and named him sushi.
Then I caught a wrumple and named him berry, later evolving into dustox which I thought was pretty cool.
I tried catching an aron but I accidentally killed it. Then I caught a slugma and named her grandma who was unfortunately killed by a magnemite on cycling road...Then I caught a swablu and named him birb.

Things were going pretty well and I was on my way to the 4th gym but first I had to battle Archie and I took it lightly and lost my level 30 berry (dustox) who was killed by a high roll critical sonic boom by his golbat. Sushi took care of his golbat and sharpedo and almost died but luckily we beat him.

So the team looks like this now
Sushi the male marshtomp, level 34
Birb the male swablu, level 18

Deaths
Berry the male dustox, level 30
Grandma the female slugma, level 23

Things aren't looking too good rn oof looks like I'll have to grind a lot

Just started my first nuzlock~ Using pokemon Crystal.

Totodile (F) Named Juno

So before I even started, my time in the game was wrong and I really wanted to get a good chance at getting Hoppip before it gets dark, so had to deal with all of that nonsense. But as you see, I was able to change the time and my luck is in my favor and got a Hoppip!

Hoppip (F) Names Cottonweed
Rattata (M) Named Booty
Poliwag (M) Naru

I think I'm doing well, along with getting the rules right. You can only catch one pokemon on each route I believe?

Newly added to the team:
Spinarak (M) Nick
Also sadly went to sprout tower thinking the odds will be with me to get Gastly, as its 85% chance at night, but nope, I see a rattata...
Also newly added:
Wooper (M) Smoothie
Pigey (F) Sage
So far, no deaths :)

OKay, so big update, didn't update in a while.

Nearly lost so much of my pokemon to a stupid growlithe while I was under leveled. I sadly didn't have my geodude who could have fainted him easily, so while trying not to get my pokemon killedby switching, I had gotten four of my pokemon dead. Also lost some others for when I was trying to train :/

My team at the moment:
Rattata (F) Booty - LV 16
Oddish (M) Evans - LV 18
Geodude (F) Jody - LV 20
Nidorino - Spiky boi - LV 18
Croconaw (F) Juno - LV 18
Magnemite - Bhames - LV 17

In my box:
Spearow (M) Spade LV 10
Suduwoodo (M) Jazzles - LV20 (Won't use him though)
EGG
Spinark (M) Nick LV9
Weedle (F) Waspdrill LV14
Hoothoot (F) Hootatoot LV15
Kadabra (M) Abba LV 19 (will probs only use him for ghost gym, too overpowered)

Death:
Pigey (F) Sage lV15
Hoppip (F) Cottenweed LV13
Wooper (M) Smoothie LV 13
Poliwag (M) Naru LV 14
Zubat (M) Touche LV 15 (Died from that Kadabra I expected didn't have confusion, but 'touche to it, because it did)
Magby (F) Lucky LV17

I lucky didn't have much problem with Whitney, which I was surprised on, usedSpikeyboi to kill her first pokemon, tried using Evans to posion her but that looked too diecy to quickly switched to Jody so killed her almost instantly.
A little worried on the ghost gym, and the steel and fighting gym. Had hoped to use lucky but sadly he died. Had tried getting Growlithe but he has roar :/

So with my nuzlocke, I'm at a lost at what to do, don't worry not because I hardly have any pokemon left but there seems to be something wrong with my PC in crystal?
I had gotten myself the Eevee and found a Natu and put them into my boxes, in box 1. And when I went to take em out to train for the fighting gym, they weren't in my box anymore??

I looked everywhere, even in the box for the dead, but couldn't find them! Also weirdly box 1 is saying Ihave 15pokemon in there, but when I look, there's only 10 pokemon, is it some sort of glitch?
This is the 3DS version and I've never hacked so I dunno what's going on. Makes me unsure on what to do with the Nuzlocke or my game in general.
If it helps, or doesnt I had crystal installed a while ago and only played it to try and get a shiny starter or start with a female with good stats.

Huh, that’s really weird to be honest. I played through Pokemon Crystal last year on the 3DS as well and didn’t encounter any problems like that. It may be a glitch or something else entirely. Maybe someone else here knows something.

Glad to read about the challenges you guys were doing. I’m currently playing through a Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke challenge and will post about it later. :)

Yeah it is strange, I tried asking on reddit too so waiting on that, I'm wiling to just delete my saved data, start over and hope it won't do that again? Because I seriously don't see how I can take on the fightng gym without Natu or Eevee (was gonna evolve it to Espeon) besides can't tell if it will happen again with my boxes if it removed two?

As, at this time, my flying pokemon are all dead, Jody died to the ghost gym and Kadabra died via the ghost gym too. XD

Started a Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke challenge not too long ago and it’s going well so far!

Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke

Trainer: Riley

Trials: 2/8

Grand Trials: 1/4

Pokemon:

Jangmo-o (M), Lv. 23
Mr. Mime (M), Lv. 23
Mareanie (M), Lv. 23
Tyrunt (F), Lv. 24
Trumbeak (F), Lv. 24
Fearow (F), Lv. 25

Boxes:

Zubat (F), Lv. 11
Lillipup (F), Lv. 15
Drowzee (M), Lv. 9

Deaths: n/a

I picked Litten as my starter and made it past the tutorial and everything to catch a Pokemon. I then wondertraded them both away for a Pikipek and a Mareanie. From there I continued to catch Pokemon and wondertrade them away, and got some rare finds as you can see. I’m really glad I got both Jangmo-o and Tyrunt as I love Dragon type Pokemon, and they’re both great. I haven’t lost any Pokemon yet, but have had some close shaves in battle. I just recently finished the water trial on Akala island, so next I’ll be heading towards Wela Volcano, site of the third trial in the game. Looking forward to it!

I'm not doing a challenge run at the moment, but I am playing through Crystal Clear for the first time! I hope it's okay to record my playthrough here! (If not, I'll edit it out from this post, lol)

Anyways, so far I've obtained 2 badges! I'll leave a quick "cliffnotes" version of my journey thus far:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Badge 1: I chose Vermillion City as my starting town, since Lt. Surge is my favorite gym leader from Kanto. I chose Houndour because you usually wouldn't be able to use it until the postgame in vanilla Crystal. I gave her the name Diabla, since its a hellhound c: I decided to train in the routes above Vermillion City before challenging Surge and found my way to Mt. Moon. I didn't spend too much time in the cave, as I was too low-leveled for the cave encounters (and I didn't want to deal with the many random encounters lol) but I did encounter a Zubat and caught it, naming her Bandit. I then tried to fight Lt. Surge in Vermillion... but found it to be too difficult due to Bandit being weak to Electric. So... I went to Celadon instead and easily beat Erika with my fire and flying type advantage against her grass-types. (It was a bit of cheap win... not my proudest moment...)

Badge 1 A.png

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Badge 2: I head east of Celadon, eventually ending up at the docks south of Lavender Town. Here, I obtain an Old Rod. I use this rod to capture my next team member, Froggy the Poliwag. I plan to evolve him into a Politoed, as I find it to be much cuter than Poliwrath c: Afterward, wanting to check out Johto, I board the Magnet Train and end up in Goldenrod. I head north, and then to the left, making my way to port town of Olivine City. I challenge Jasmine, who only has a Steelix on her team, and easily defeat it using Diabla, earning my second badge.

Badge 2 A.png

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

And that's where I am so far! I'll try to update here as I progress through the game. c:

Update, played a bit more this morning!

Badge 3:

After beating Jasmine, I head back to Goldenrod, traveling south to Ilex Forest. Here, I learn the move Headbutt and teach it to Froggy. I then head north to Route 35, where I have Froggy use Headbutt on the trees. Eventually, an Exeggcute falls from the tree, and I catch it using a Great Ball. I decide to name her Omelette, since it's basically a bunch of eggs. c:

Afterwards, I board the Magnet Train back to Kanto and head south, to the ferry located below Saffron City. I ride the ferry to New Cinnabar Island and challenge the gym there. I have some difficulties, mainly due to the fact that half my team is ineffective against Blaine's fire-types, but manage to come out on top using Froggy's super-effective water moves, earning myself my third badge!

Badge 3 A.png

I plan to challenge Blue's gym next, since thus far I've only been challenging gyms that I've had advantages against, and I want a serious challenge now that I've rounded out my team a bit... wish me luck! c:

Update on my Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke!

Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke

Trainer: Riley

Trials: 3/8

Grand Trials: 1/4

Pokemon:

Jangmo-o (M), Lv. 25
Mr. Mime (M), Lv. 25
Mareanie (M), Lv. 25
Tyrunt (F), Lv. 25
Staryu (Genderless), Lv. 23

Boxes:

Zubat (F), Lv. 11
Lillipup (F), Lv. 15
Drowzee (M), Lv. 9
Magikarp (F), Lv. 1

Deaths:

Trumbeak (F), Lv. 25
Fearow (F), Lv. 25

I went on my way towards Wela Volcano, continuing to battle trainers and catch and wondertrade away Pokemon. I was able to beat the fire trial, but both Trumbeak and Fearow fainted and had to be released. On route 8 I caught a first encounter and wondertraded it away for a Staryu. It won’t be particularly helpful for the grass trial, but I think it will be useful later on, so I’m keeping it on my team and will be giving it the water stone at the end of route 8 so it can evolve into a Starmie. Up next I’ll be heading towards Lush Jungle, site of the next trial. Looking forward to it!

Update on my Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke!

Pokemon Ultra Sun Wonderlocke

Trainer: Riley

Trials: 3/8

Grand Trials: 1/4

I ended up losing at the grass trial and everyone got destroyed. I don’t know when I’ll be doing another challenge again, but I’m taking a break from it for now. Until next time, see ya!

BLACKOUT

So, decided to delete my Crystal game, as I was very unclear on what could happen if I still continued. I'll start it again soon. But at the moment, I wanna try and do a nuzlocke in pokemon black/white 2!

Trainer: Vesper

Pokemon so far:
Snivy (M) Ubon LV10
Purrloin (M) Scraggle LV9
Pidove (M) Sorrow LV9
Lillipup (M) Jimmy LV9

Currently just training Ubon and Jimmy to LV11 and gonna try the first gym! Little scared really, patrat and lillipup's attacks are insane.

First gym:
(I may had turned my game off at one point, which will not ever happen again)
Anyways, I started with Ubon, leering them before getting rid of the patrat. When it came to Lillipup, I kept Ubon in for a bit to leer him and wrap just to get a bit of attack done. Once Lillipup decided to attack me, I switched with my own Lillipup - Jimmy - and with the with of the oran berry, was able to tackle him down and win the first gym.

I hadn't believed Jimmy would of made it to be honest, but glad he has! Got pick up as its ability.

Second gym:

Growlithe (M) Yuff LV16
Pidove (M) Sorrow LV 16
Snivy (M) Ubon LV 15 (just chillin')
Lillipup (M) Jimmy LV 15
Purrloin (M) Scraggle LV 16 (I was in the complex going against the workers and Scraggle nearly died, but hang on with 1HP)

Koffing tried killing Yuff with a crit, but he came back to burn the heck outta Koffing. Switched to Sorrow. I forgot Whirlpede had blasted protect....Venoshock took half my HP so I changed back to Yuff, Luckily my yuffboi has intimiate so venoshock hasn'tdone too much damage. Yuff embered and burnt him~
Venoshock quit and luckily hasn't poisoned me yet! I had a berry on him so there was no worries. We both healed our Pokemon. Venoshock continues to crit. As well as them using the blasted protect! But the burn was helping a lot. With one last ember, he fainted~

What's great is that Sorrow and Yuff are gonna be a big help against the bug gym so yah!

Third gym:
Pokemon I have on hand: (and all I have hehe...)
- Tranquil (M) Sorrow LV22
- Herdier (M) Kimmy LV20
- Servine (M) Ubon LV20
- Rattata (F) Natter LV18
- Timburr (M) Yolo LV21
- Audino (F) Kayla LV17 (Was hoping for a lopunny or whimsicott...)

So! Sadl Yuff and Scraggle fainted while I was training them. Lopunny wouldn't leave us alone. So super sad on both their faints. Also had hoped for getting Drillbur as I never used it, but Timburr came outta nowhere as I realised my repel didn't work well.
Also glad I got Rattata~ im doing a sort oa crystal nuzlock sorta im not too sure yet hasnt gotten anything killed yet~ and i havent gottan rattata in crystal when I wanted so yah~

Was super scared of this one. More worried about Dwebble.
Instantly Swadloon wasn't difficult, they used a hyper potion which I guess means, one of his potions is out. Used Yolo for Dwebble since Dwebble ahtes his own typing and i had a rock move~ That was done in about two moves.
Leavanny now~ He had a berry, but so did I~ Sorrow did so well, Leavenny only used cutI was worried it had bug bite. But it was a super easy match!
Just wish Scraggle was alive as I wanted to evolve it. But meh, new route next so yay~
I do love his new gym though, super artistic. <3

I’ve decided I’m going to be restarting my Pokemon Shield file to do a Surpriselocke (basically the same thing as a Wonderlocke). Haven’t tried one in Sword/Shield yet so I figured I might as well attempt one now. I’ll make sure to post regularly and provide updates about it as I progress!

Update:

Started a Pokemon Shield Surpriselocke tonight (basically the same thing as a Wonderlocke), and it’s going well so far. I chose Sobble as my starter and caught a first encounter Skwovet on route two before surprise trading them away. It took four or five trades before I finally got a level one Axew and a level one Machop. I was really afraid they were going to die to be honest. Went back to route one and faced off against a level three Nickit. The Nickit kept using Quick Attack, but thankfully after a bit it just kept spamming Tail Whip and not attacking at all. This allowed me to take it out and begin grinding levels for both Axew and Machop. Taking a break from it for now, but this challenge looks promising so far (Haxorus and Machamp are both powerhouses, which is great). When I next resume I’ll be grinding levels and heading to the wild area.

Just a small update, but I finally grinded enough levels for Axew and Machop, and then went to the wild area. Began catching first encounter Pokemon in all the different areas and kept surprise trading until, by the time I got to Motostoke, I had a full team. I’m really digging most of the party members (except Skwovet to be honest), and am looking forward to starting the gym challenge in this Surpriselocke. Next I’ll be heading to Turffield, site of the first Galar gym badge.

This looks like a fun challenge, I might give it a go in one of the older games. I read everything on bulbapedia... looks like there are 2 main rules for the challenge, or am I missing something?

Looks like these are the important rules to follow?

The Nuzlocke Challenge has only two rules that must be followed:

  • Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead, and must be released or put in the Pokémon Storage System permanently (or may be transferred to another game, as long as the Pokémon is never able to be used again during this run).
  • The player may only catch the first wild Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first wild Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances. If the first encounter in the area is a double battle, the player is free to choose which of the two wild Pokémon they would like to catch but may only catch one of them. This restriction does not apply to Pokémon able to be captured during static encounters, nor to Shiny Pokémon.

Other near-universally used rules include:

  • The player must nickname all of their Pokémon, for the sake of forming stronger emotional bonds.
  • The player may only use Pokémon they have captured themselves, meaning Pokémon acquired through trading, Mystery Gifts, etc., are prohibited. As for trading and retrading the same Pokémon (for the purpose of evolving a Graveler, for example), there is no firm consensus. As of White: Hard-Mode Episode 3, it is implied that the player can accept Pokémon that are received freely from NPCs.
  • The player may not voluntarily reset and reload the game whenever things go wrong. Being able to do so would render all of the other rules pointless.

Fourth Gym Black 2:
Took my time with this gym as well as being busy with other things~

Pokemon:
Dwebble: Tagteam LV 28 (Holding quick claw)
Servine: Ubon LV 27
Sandile: Yippers LV28 (Holding leftovers)
Herdier: Jimmy LV 27
Gurdurr: Yolo LV 28
Tranquil: Sorrow LV 27 (Just watching from the sidelines)

As you could probably tell, Yippers and Tagteam were gonna be my main battle companions this round.

I started with Tagteam, started by leveling the battlefield using stealth rock. Emolga almost kills Tagteam with it's volt switch, so I switched out to Yippers, who easily took out her Flaaffy.
She then wants to use Zebstrika. Yippers was parazled, but I knew Yippers could hang on, which gladly he did! Zebstrike hanged on with 1/2HP and then eat their berry but was able to defeat them next turn.

When bringing Emolga back out, both Yippers and Tagteam weren't looking so great, so I decided to use Jimmy, why you may ask? Well I got Jimmy to learn Rock Tomb. Jimmy only needed two turns to beat him and I'd won~

Ohhh boi Clay is next, is it bad to believe it least one pokemone will faint in that gym? Honestly Excadrill scares me, shame I hadn't caught one, really wanted to use it!
Still sweating bullets XD
Currently still alive in my box so far: Raticate (Natter), Audino (Kayla), Two Minccinos (Alama & Kalos), Cottonee (whisper), Gothita (Fezzle) and lastly Ducklett (MockingJay)
I wanna quickly say with Ducklett, I vaguley remember that I had such a good nickname for it, I sadly forgotten what it was, I feel like it had something to do with mocking it's name or type of bird it is, but I hate myself because I do remember having a giggle and not writing it down pains me XD
Post automatically merged:

Quick question, should I use Zoura, or leave it in boxes? I generally don't mind, but I am not really bothered in using it as in my white 2 game I plan on using it (normal non nuzlocke).

Yes, those are the main rules to follow. If a Pokemon faints it is considered dead and must be released, and you can only catch the first Pokemon you encounter in an area (route/place/city). There’s a plethora of other rules and optional rules, and there are also different rules for different challenges, but those two are the main ones that need to be followed for something like this.

Quick question, should I use Zoura, or leave it in boxes? I generally don't mind, but I am not really bothered in using it as in my white 2 game I plan on using it (normal non nuzlocke).

As far as I’m concerned, if Zorua is the first Pokemon you encounter in that city/place, then you can use it (even if it’s a gift Pokemon). That’s the way I’ve always done it whenever playing the fifth generation of games.

Hope this helps both of you! :)
