Here's my entry in the Tad Writing Contest. Hopefully it stayed reasonably PG for your liking.
Prologue:
Before the end times, everything will be perfect. The land will be cloaked in green, nourished by waters so rich in nutrients as to heal life-threatening wounds. There will be a sense of peace, and fighting would be a thing of the past.
Then, an ancient darkness will sweep across the land, causing death to whatever it touches. It will cleanse the universe of anything living, before it too fades into nonexistence. But during these dire times, a chosen one will rise up to oppose this great evil. Clad in green, this beacon of light will meet the darkness in one final battle, the outcome of which is uncertain.
This ancient prophecy has been passed down through generations, becoming the subject of numerous cases of mass hysteria. However, no cases have ever come true and the world would continue on as normal. But there were now signs that this was finally coming true. Was this just the paranoid delusions of a few people, or truly the beginning of something far more sinister?
The Prophecy unravels:
I stepped out of my house, seeing nothing of particular importance. Cherry had moved out about a week prior, and the town had not been taking it well. Most people knew she desired to leave to become a dancer, but she had been such a good friend and no one truly considered it as a real possibility. Now that she was gone, a feeling of emptiness had spread across the entire town. Visitors occasionally visited the spot where her vacant house went, reminiscing on all the good times together. I had planned to visit this location, but upon arriving was met with a hideous sight. A new house had appeared overnight. It was the ugliest piece of architecture I had ever seen. To even call it a house was to be misleading, its true nature being incomprehensible. With reluctance I opened the door to greet the new neighbor. It was a large, brown hippo. He stood motionless in the middle of the room. I asked his name. "Biff" was his only reply. I tried to talk to him some more, but did not receive any answer. I left, confused and saddened that this person had moved in the one location where Cherry used to. I had planned to commission a fountain there in her honor.
For weeks I tried to move on with my life and accept the loss of Cherry, but it was useless. Everything just seemed empty, and the village would never truly be the same. With a heavy heart I decided to leave my town that I had worked so hard on. As I sat at the train station and watched the train that would take me away from this town, I felt nothing inside. When it came to a stop, I stood up and noticed a green frog exit, immediately running up to me.
"Hey, you're the mayor right?!"
"Um, I guess."
Not going to be for long...
My name is Tad! For some reason I just felt like I had to live here, and now here I am!
"Fascinating. Now I need to catch my...
Of course, the train had already left. This frog had somehow caught my attention so well that I didn't even notice the train pulling away. The next one wouldn't arrive for 2 more hours, though I would never board that train, nor the one after that. Tad and I quickly became friends, and I no longer had any desire to leave. He was always a pleasure to be around, and had a particular skill for telling jokes. He told me about his dreams about becoming a CEO, and we exchanged long conversations that would last well into the night. It seemed that my life was finally getting back on track. It all seemed so perfect.
Disaster
It had seemed like any other morning, but when I opened my door I saw a horrible sight. The plants had withered away. Even our beloved town tree had perished. The rivers were flowing with lava, and the sky filled with a heavy smog. Just then, there was a horrible screech that filled the entire town.
squirt
It was Biff's catchphrase. But I hadn't seen him for months...
Do not make this difficult. Running will only make your end worse.
Just then, the entire wasteland was illuminated in a flash of green light. Biff was visibly hurt and disappeared from the area. Tad had saved me.
"I now know why I had such a strange urge to visit your town. I am the only thing that can save us from this evil. He is gone for now, but my attack only temporarily disabled him. He will only reappear stronger."
We ran to the reset center, which had been remade into a shelter for the few survivors. Not many had made it, but Booker and Copper were protecting the location with their lives. They were no longer the friendly police officers I once knew, but instead were only shells of their former selves. It seems battling with Biff had slowly eaten away at their very being. Once we were safe inside, Tad told me about what had happened. He told me I had been asleep for 3 months. During this time, Biff had revealed himself to be not a normal hippo, but instead a bloodthirsty monster. He had also been the real reason as to why Cherry had disappeared. She was his first victim.
"If we do not destroy him, he will cover the entire world in darkness."
"Is there any way to do this?"
"I am not sure, but anyone can be destroyed if they are damaged enough. He is still stunned by my attack. If we move quickly, we may be able to destroy him.
"I guess we don't have much of a choice. How much time until he regains strength?"
Just then, the door to the Reset Center burst open with unimaginable force. Biff had already regained strength, and was attacking the last bastion of survival.
"This is even faster than last time! His power only continues to grow!
Booker and Copper fought the beast, as Tad and I evacuated the survivors from the Reset Center. Both police officers were easily overpowered by Biff, but their sacrifice had allowed Tad to reach a strategic location.
Accept your defeat. There is no use in resistance.
"Tad, what are we going to do?!"
"Just leave it to me. You have been a good friend. But now I do what I must.
Biff had morphed into a beast the size of a building. He slowly moved toward Tad.
You have truly been an irritating opponent. But now I finally have you.
Just then, Tad's entire body began to glow a green hue. Soon, the whole universe was filled with an explosion of light. One word could be heard that drowned out any other noise.
sluuuurp
There was no sign of Biff. Nor any sign of Tad. He had sacrificed his existence to save everything. His light had brought life back to the dead landscape. Though the town was scarred by Biff's rampage, we would gather the survivors. We would rebuild.
I commissioned a fountain by Tad's house. It was a monument to everything and everyone that had been lost in the event. To Cherry, who had been among them. To Booker and Copper who defended the town for months. But most of all to Tad, who had given everything so that we could live.
