Who's into houseplants?

I really really really want to get into house plants but im always super anxious any time I try to go to a store to buy any 🥺 like I want to ask questions and know how to care for them all but I get too scared.

I'll go eventually i just need to work up the courage 😂

My advice is to begin with an easy plant to take care of (pothos, snake plants, zz plants, and tradescantias are all good beginner plants) and make sure not to overwater it! It's an easy mistake to make, pretty much every plant person does it. XD Pretty much only water a plant when the soil is completely dry, then water it until water is coming out the bottom.

Light is important too, but a lot of tropical plants are low-light, so I'd stick with tropical vs succulents because desert plants demand a lot more light! My poor echeveria is all stretched out even though it's right next to a window. 😔 (Aloe Veras and Haworthias are good low light succulents though if you really want one).

I wanted some desert plants like cacti but I'm kinda afraid my animals would get hurt lol

But I really should buy some more houseplants in general though. ._.

There are definitely non-toxic and non-spiny succulents that are safe for animals. Here's a list from the ASPCA for example. The real question however is will those plants be safe from your pets? 😆

I have a few houseplants. Mostly pathos and succulents. My favorites are my string of dolphins and my peace bunny plants.

Excuse me WHAT? DOLPHIN PLANT? OMG???😲
Edit Okay I just had to look it up and OMG I NEEED THIS PLANT IT'S SO CUTE. THEY'RE ACTUALLY SHAPED LIKE DOLPHINS? HELLO??? I love dolphins.

Sooo, I was out shopping lookin for an African Violette at my grocery store since they were there alot, and I saw someone in this thread post about them being good indoor plants.

They weren't there.

BUT my grocery store did have Zygos (Chritsmas cactus) so I bought 2 cause they had a deal on them. They're flowers are already blooming and they smell nice. Also my Amaryliss Starburst plant is growing its flower and to my surprise, it looks like it will have multiple flowers.

Yeah and my peace bunny plant looks like bunnies 😊 plants are great.

I love houseplants!! I've got maybe fifteen but they are all currently staying with my mum because my house got flooded and I have nowhere to keep them 😭

I have so many because my mum is obsessed with them, so I have about 20. Thing is we live in an apartment and we only have one side of the house that gets natural light so its hard for us to get too many light-loving plants. Most of ours don’t have flowers but I have beautiful peace lilies in my bedroom so im happy :)

Wow, now this is my kinda thread!
I have a small little set of plants:

A Snake Plant - easiest guy in the world to please, barely needs sunlight, and is happy with whatever amount of water I give him!
A Peace Lily - actually a really finicky plant, but I think his pot might be a little too small for him. Drinks up sooo much water!
A Dracaena - fairly easy to care for plant. Doesn't seem fussy at all, takes the water I give him, but definitely drinks more than the snake plant does.
A Codiaeum - this is my special needs plant. He needs his leaves to be spritzed fairly often, and needs a fair amount of water or he gets upset.
A Pilea - This guy grows like mad, makes babies, and gobbles up water like nobody's business!
An Aglaonema - he was my best plant until I swapped his pot. Part of him broke off, and he hasn't been the same since. He really looks like he hasn't changed at all. Doesn't look sad, doesn't look healthy, but needs some help standing up now. Barely drinks any water and hates waterlogged soil.
An Aeonium - this fellow is a succulent. I have no clue what his problem was, but he grew huge, flopped to the side, lost some leaves at the bottom, and is now sprouting an absolute ton of tiny leaves where the originals used to be. He's like my frankenplant.

I would LOVE to have houseplants if my cat didn't eat them at every chance he got.

I made a succulent pot last year, took a lot of time to grow and try not to overwater... my hubby fell asleep on the couch one night without putting my plant away and woke up to succulent and dirt all over the living room floor 😭 i can forget having flowers lol

I wish I was into houseplants! I admire all of you who can keep plants alive soo much. I'm a great cat mom, but unfortunately plants don't meow when they're hungry. 🤦🏻‍♀️

It maybe is supposed to do this. Kinda. Idk if the ones I have are the same as yours, but I've had 2 different succulents grown really big, a bunch of the bottom leaves die, then just flop over. However neither of mine have grown new leaves. I think the plant just needs to be put into a deeper pot so the stalk that is (was) bare is more in the soil. It's possible that the plant got too heavy and fell over. Also sometimes it's hard for the bottom leaves to get sunlight since they're so covered by all the other leaves. I want to put mine in a pot that doesn't have a big thick border around it cause I feel like that doesn't help and blocks out the sun too. Like it needs to go into a big planter window box thing. Just somethin that gives it more space around it.

I love houseplants but this thread makes me feel that I'm not into it very formally compared to most of you. I have over 20 plants in my home, but I dont actually know the names of any of them. I am fairly good at caring for them though (I've had a lot of them for over 5 years now).

I just briefly read the tag that comes with them from the shop to see what amounts of sun/water they like, and start from there!

Sadly, I'm very bad at keeping any ivy alive, so I've given up on that type despite trying different approaches multiple times. I dont tend to get along easily with most tropical plants either, but there have been some exceptions! Otherwise, I am always wanting to add more to my plant family!

I love them but sadly I have like no room or spots to place them where I live. I have a balcony but with the tropical storms and random strong winds over here, I'd be scared they'd get ruined or blown away.

currently the most i have is a cactus named gretchen (which ty this thread reminded me to water her), but once i get my new bed and some window film (the stuff that makes your room rainbowy) i'll have more access to my windowsill and will get more plants. :3

Absolutely don't feel bad about not being 'well versed' about plants, I also literally read the tag to see lighting and watering conditions. I have like 10 succulents and while I know they're different I literally could not tell you any of their real names. The names I give them, yes. But I don't actually know what type they are. I either call them by what name was on the tag (if there even was one, usually the succulents don't have a tag with an actual name) or the name I give them based in their looks. I have a succulent I call leopard cause it has spots on its leaves. The fact that you've kept your plants alive for so long means you're well versed in the needs of your plant.

I have a real hard time with flamingo flowers. I've had 2 and for some reason both have had major issues. I had one inside but I thought it needed more light cause it was having issues so I put it outside. Big mistake. It for burned to a crisp in the HEAT of this state, so I moved it back inside. I thought it was dead but it did grow little sprouts, then it just died completely. I have another one rn but AS SOON as I brought it home in my room the leaves started turing brown and dying left and right. I think I'm going to move it outside in the shade somewhere but I literally have no idea why 2 separate flamingo flowers from 2 separate locations (one I got from Lowes and the other I got from my grocery store) have had SUCH a bad time in my room. If this one doesn't do well in the shade outside then I'm just not gonna buy another flamingo flower, I do not understand why they act like this.

Also thanks to this thread I have been made aware of the existence of String of Dolphins which I ABSOLUTELY NEED IN MY LIFE and while I was out at Lowes looking for more plant plates I FOUND ONE! Also String of Bananas which I also got c: The String of Dolphins such an adorable plant

I'm determined to start a collection of real house plants next year! I only have a ton of smaller, fake ones :[ I'm reluctant to start, though because I've heard they attract spiders?. Not sure how true this is though ahah. Any recommendations for starters? What plants are easy to keep alive??

yeah pests are unavoidable, unfortunately. some common ones are mealy bugs, spider mites, aphids, fungus gnats. there are many ways to get rid of them, but they will show up over time again haha such is the cycle of life. i just recently experienced my first pest and they were spider mites X___x they're so tiny, idek if i've gotten rid of them yet! but i've been doing treatments.

easy plants to keep alive are succulents - basically cause they thrive if you neglect them (aka don't be a hover parent like i am and water excessively). important things to note are light - all plants need light, even the 'low light' ones kept at stores. i've also killed a ton of succulents so LMAOO

also sorry hi i love plants! i thought i was notorious for killing them but felt super determined this past year and now i have quite a few and they're mostly alive! if i can do it, anyone can do it ^^;;;;
