DLC Discussion & Updates ~

an interesting idea! I don't have much to add beyond what people have already said, but to echo... I don't anticipate paid DLC for NH, but could see it in whatever the next iteration of AC might be. that being said, I still anticipate--and hope for--quite a bit with the current free updates we've been getting seasonally. I know a lot of criticism about NH has to do with the fact people feel the game is "incomplete" compared to NL, which I'd agree with if I didn't think they were just slowly rolling out content in update-sized chunks. my boyfriend also said he "promises" me that we won't ever see paid DLC in AC--he said only another game, and he asked what could they add that would justify paid content when we've already gotten everything else for free?

what I'd like to see, and will be disappointed if we don't get, is beloved NPCs like Brewster and his cafe or maybe Kapp'N, as well as a few new buildings. I know there's been a lot of debate about that given that some think it will upset players who have already meticulously landscaped their islands, but I think it'd be an even bigger letdown to cap it off where they have it now.

I really love the idea of adding more ways to travel--almost like Sims 4. I am really not a fan of Harv's Island and find it kind of bland it's the only place we can go other than mystery islands. It'd be great if in the Year 1 update, they introduced another island--maybe where Tortimer is? perhaps that's where some current NPCs like Kicks or Labelle could get their shops... you could even bring back Shampoodle with exclusive hair styles and colors, maybe.

it's a fine line between the game being lacking and feeling empty versus it still being an in-progress reveal. I'm hoping for the latter, worry about the former, but don't think paid DLC will affect it either way

Honestly, I'd pay to have a bigger island size.

7 by 6 acres is nice and all, but all my 'good' ideas need 8 by 8. XD

If they introduce DLC I am not going to buy it. I could see Nintendo doing it considering how grubby they've been recently. The game has barely held me since they changed the focus of the series to customization and island decoration, and that would probably be the straw to break the camel's back.
That’s completely fair. I felt that way with Pokémon: Sw/Sh
I think i’d only cave if Nintendo fleshed out AC a bit more and at the end of the update cycles they did that

Unfortunately, too many people paid for DLC content when it started to pop up as a 'norm' and now its stuck with us. Paid DLC isn't any new concept, it existed with MMORPGs long ago. Companies just figured out they can do that with regular games and people bought into it.

It sucks, but as long as the contents are worth it and it is a reasonable price, I don't mind paying for DLC.

Coming from someone totally broke (now) and was never allowed to buy anything virtually (when i was younger)

If I was playing NH back then and they added new big paid DLC, as a kid I'd probably be really sad to be missing out on all the content that I'd have no way of obtaining. So that doesn't really seem like a family-friendly thing to do in a game aimed at kids. (((however im very aware many games do this))) I always have liked AC because with enough effort, time and luck you can obtain almost everything and complete it.

but then again I guess most kids now who are even into AC have parents who could afford & have become more accepting of paid DLC. Especially because a switch is £250-£300? Even second hand. And a ds was like £100 and then down to even £60 second hand. One of my dads friends was kind enough to gift us their wii they were getting rid of, and ACLGGTC was on sale. You don't have the same prices with the switch, like Im borrowing my partners atm because I'm still saving up for my own and ACNH i only saved up enough for last month.

So as somone pretty tight on money i sure hope not because £50 was already a lot for a game that still lacks the content of the same ones that roughly cost £25.

who knows, they may really start ding paid DLCs. The game is only out for not even a year. im sure they have have something unexpected plans for it. Im all for it if the DLCs consist of interesting things since i have the finance to do so. A big no if it was something that existed way back in NL

I would say though that when it comes to the past datamines by Ninji...all the past updates were predicted by his datamines, redd, Leif, swimming, Luna and dreamsuites. So always take a datamine with a degree of caution but I don't think the code that was found was leftover code from a dropped feature or something in the early beta stage, it is most likely part of an upcoming feature. When and what exactly is still in question

I do think they can definately do more, with more islands. There is no real limit to other characters getting their own island like harvs. The Happy Home Academy would be a great example. an island where we can travel to and do tasks for non island villagers such as decorating homes for them based on a specific theme or request.
..similar to how it works in pocket camp, that would be another fun thing to do.
...I'd prefer not to have another HHD game to decorate stuff. The wedding season was enough haha. What I, or WE need: is new gameplay mechanics to keep the game fresh, but also to bring back the very heart of Animal Crossing: funny dialogue and exploration. I want a big new area so bad and with returning NPCs where you can ask them a lot of things. I want new important characters too. Like if Tortimer had a newphew or something :ROFLMAO: I want more interraction and fetch quests in a new area in the game.

First of all, it warms my heart seeing another European with the awkwardly named LGTTC. Haha to this day I still don't understand why we in the EU couldn't have the simple "City Folk" :ROFLMAO:

As for what you said about the younger audience of players being left out: I get that. Which is why I think the DLC shouldn't lock new hairstyles and previous furniture behind a paywall.

However brand new furniture sets and a new area I think is fair to be paid for. Life isn't fair always, and I think IF games want more money to keep the game fresh and alive, I say DLC justifies the cause. But I agree that certain things should keep being free.

Not to mention they also did in fact promise us to keep the game alive for 3-5 years. That could both be free regular updates similar to Splatoon 2, and maybe big chunks of paid DLC each start of the next year. As long as they keep the game active and fun that's what matter! Money or not :)

I can see Nintendo charging for DLC. Amiibos are pretty much DLC locked behind a paywall that can at least be reused. Though I personally would like if they didn't, I wouldn't be that surprised if they did either. I just hope that of Nintendo ever brings back all the old furniture, fruit and Tortimer island from NL, they don't charge money for it. Hope this comment doesn't start a war 👀

I know paid DLC is such a dirty word for some, but usually it means better quality content and harder work. Unless we talking GameFreak with Pokémon... Oof.

But you are right, I feel like amiibo's already are a form of DLC in some sense. Pay to get the one you want or suffer with chance haha...

I hope if Tortimer's islans return it will be different and not at all similar to NL version. I personally want Tortimer to retire and be free.

This is exactly what I mean. 😞 Each time I hear news of S&S (like the $10 to transfer pokemon from Go to S&S or else wait an entire week to be able to transfer again amongst others) it puts me off from buying the game. And one of my biggest fears is AC becoming something similar.

I actually don't even mind too much paying for DLC as long as it doesn't get abused or is half baked yet overpriced 🙁

I'm a huge Pokéfan, but I skipped on Sw/Sh because I saw right from the start it was a rushed halfbaked product.

New Horizons on the other hand is in the hands of a good team of devs. The game itself looks amazing and plays wonderfully. The lack of dialogue and quality of life things is mostly due to a rushed schedule to release it in March 20th.

I think the locked events was a very smart move as it build hype in the community what is to come, and besides nobody can time travel and get all items.

So do I have faith in New Horizons for updates and DLC? Yes. Do I believe it will exceed my expectations and dreams? No haha.

I totally agree with you on the locked events being a smart move, although I personally would've had the first wave release on the first of the month it's slated to release. This wave is coming a little too late for my liking.
Knowing the dev team's past decisions and update history, I have faith in them when it comes to delivering a good AC experience. I think that in time NH will end up a lot more fleshed out than it was at release.

Unfortunately this is just the way people are. If you get enough people to be okay (complacent) with it then the rest will have to submit or be left behind. It's a reoccurring theme with many things in life. Be it how corporations are allowed to walk over us or whatever.

At the very least, NH needs to bring more free updates before they slap a price sticker on it. There's hardly jack to justify them greedily slobbering so early in the game's life.

Eventually most if not all basic functions will be added to the game in a year's time or more. I also believe the old furniture will make a return. I just worry for NPCs who's past job is currently being filled. You know: Pelly and Phyllis, Harriet, and more. I wonder if we will see them someday.

4 months from now will be when this game will have it's 1st anniversary. So yeah, not a whole lot has been added update wise in terms of how much time has passed. Heck, we're still waiting on the November trailer and Thanksgiving is next week. Which is kind of weird because in other games November 1st is when Harvest Day would start to be talked about, have stuff in the shops, ect.

It just doesn't feel natural to have your villagers start to only mention Harvest Day the week of. They've already made the villagers feel so artificial and this just makes it worst.

This is sadly true, I wish somehow they could give like a minor update before the big one, and when I say update I mean in-game, like Isabelle tells "blabla is fast approaching" and villagers have new conversations and maybe the Nooklings asks us to gather tree branches and stuff daily as a little side quest for Turkey Day/Harvest Day or whatever it was called in Aninal Crossing. That would have been nice.

And damn, you are right... It's only 4 months left until the one year aniversary. That's like 12-14 weeks from now. Haha I'm not ready.

That's what worries me most about the update thing. You'd say that the updates would have been meatier content-wise but so far it's only added a holiday and a set per update (except April, that was better), which is bad considering everything that they could (and should) deliver. Keeping in mind that this is the same team that made Splatoon 2, you'd say they'd drop 2-3 more furniture sets per update, but they haven't. I still believe that the main focus, for now, will be holidays and we won't be seeing anything worthwhile until march (With the Super Mario update being a hint of something big coming, I presume, it can't be a coincidence with the anniversary). It does however make me wonder what they have in store for the anniversary, it has to be a huge update.

As for the November update, I do agree that it's quite tedious to wait for them but to be fair I think many of us (correct me if I'm wrong) expected monthly updates, so the long waits kind of get the player base hungry for content. I don't think any major things will be required for Harvest Day, the team does know how to make holidays, it's their main (and only it seems) focus for now, so I trust them on that!

2021 onwards, I feel like we will get fewer updates, say 3 or 4 updates throughout all the year but with good content, since it has to be new, and 2022 might see its first paid DLC.
