DLC Discussion & Updates ~

That's what worries me most about the update thing. You'd say that the updates would have been meatier content-wise but so far it's only added a holiday and a set per update (except April, that was better), which is bad considering everything that they could (and should) deliver. Keeping in mind that this is the same team that made Splatoon 2, you'd say they'd drop 2-3 more furniture sets per update, but they haven't. I still believe that the main focus, for now, will be holidays and we won't be seeing anything worthwhile until march (With the Super Mario update being a hint of something big coming, I presume, it can't be a coincidence with the anniversary). It does however make me wonder what they have in store for the anniversary, it has to be a huge update.

As for the November update, I do agree that it's quite tedious to wait for them but to be fair I think many of us (correct me if I'm wrong) expected monthly updates, so the long waits kind of get the player base hungry for content. I don't think any major things will be required for Harvest Day, the team does know how to make holidays, it's their main (and only it seems) focus for now, so I trust them on that!

2021 onwards, I feel like we will get fewer updates, say 3 or 4 updates throughout all the year but with good content, since it has to be new, and 2022 might see its first paid DLC.
My theory is that they are releasing the update slowly due to covid most likely. Maybe there is slower development and bug testing and such things. Otherwise if the world was normal, I'd like to imagine they be faster.... Splatoon2 did so well with being planned on schedule.

I think we will see DLC already in 2021 right when summer begins. They want to keep the momentum going with the fanbase and not let people get bored of the game on social media and more.

But what do you guys think? Will we get heavier meatier updates next year after all seasonal ones are done for this year?

Yes you are right, covid must have had to do with the update schedule for sure! However, I don't think adding a few extra sets would have hurt. One of the main complaints is the lack of furniture so you'd say they'd tackle that. I'm not entirely sure how Splatoon2 worked, but I believe they had meatier updates and more often, so maybe we will be seeing more love now that work is slowly going back to normal and they have time to work on their goals. Since they added wings recently I'm sure that's just a teaser of many new features to come as silly as it looks (Small details are what gives AC its charm!)

I'm not sure about the DLC being dropped in 2021, and in a way it'd look rushed to print money in my opinion. They'd want to give people a worthwhile update and I'd only expect paid DLC once the game is complete and there are no free updates left to implement! (Or important ones that is, they could still hand out new items and features a la Welcome Amiibo)

I wouldn't say things are getting back to normal anytime soon... In fact I feel the opposite :ROFLMAO:

But real life aside, Splatoon 2 kept giving new content monthly for a span of 3 years and that is including paid DLC.

The batwings we got for Halloween was already in Pocket Camp. So it's not exactly "new" but it's a step forward in hoping we get everything that "game" have. For they have waaaay too much good furniture and clothing that should already have been inside NH day 1 on March 20th.

And about paid DLC coming too soon, look at Zelda BoTW and Pokémon Sw/Sh. It's not unheard of for them to make it early on.

And I think as I have mentioned before here, that the paid DLC for NH will be in waves. Similar to Smash Bros Ultimate fighter packs.

They will be cheap but with decent content. But it will add up since nobody is not gonna refuse it. We are addicts for content haha. Starving for updates and upgrades 😅

Oh I meant mostly with workspaces adapting quickly and jobs going back to regular, with the announcement of a vaccine being added on top! I don't doubt Nintendo must have done their part adapting to the situation by now.

Yes, I know they were in Pocket Camp, I do agree with you that there are many things that game has that NH should as well, especially many of the sets or items in general. In a way I feel like they might influence each other. We had the Halloween Arch and wings for example. Now, it's up to debate on how they will deliver the new goodies (wings, holdable items that aren't wands, new sets and clothes, etc)

Yes, it is true that Zelda and Pokémon had DLC not too long after, but they were both finished games and they weren't getting free updates every 2-3 months. Now I may be wrong and they might actually drop a paid one soon, but I don't think it'd be anytime soon? Whatever it is, I do welcome paid DLC because it would mean actual effort put in the game versus a free update that doesn't give them any money. I would even be open to making amiibo-exclusive sets, how fun would that be?

I feel like the problem with this is that some people don't play daily or search the net for AC news. So Harvest Day could pass by and they'd be none the wiser. They shouldn't be holding news of that holiday hostage until a week before. And that's if they even manage to do a trailer teaser on this Thursday.

And they should had released the Mario set back when the Mario anniversary hit. I don't get why they were (and still are) waiting a half year to release and announce furniture of all things. I already forgot about it (again) until you mentioned it. They should had announced it when March hit.

So far the only holiday they've really done right is Halloween and Jack. Sure they brought Bunny Day back, but it turned out to be Bunny Week. And that and the way my villagers only ever talked about Bunny day related stuff for a week sucked the life out of me. It was never my favorite holiday in NL, but at least I could skip that day to avoid it. Now I'll have to skip an entire week next year lol.

Aside from those two, we had Nature Day (bet you all forgot that one) The only thing it did was give you 'nature' related Nook mile awards, May Day (was pretty cool, but you could only do it once), International Museum Day (where you got to find 5 haphazardly placed plaques to win a award everyday and it never changed) Wedding Month (that used Harv's studio and got boring after the first use) and Fishing and Bug Tourney that pretty much took what was once a fun challenge and turned it into a grind-a-thon that more resembles a reskinned island tour.

If they're focusing more on the holidays, but what happened to April Fools and all the other ones we skipped?

As things are now, I feel like they're already losing the attention of a lot of people who are moving onto other games now. Twitter was like nothing but AC tweets all the time and now a few months later I barely see any of my followers tweet anything AC related. Most of my friends have stopped playing the game altogether. This is the norm for AC games, but the other games also had all the content already packed in and they got to experience it all before they lost interests.

They kind of got to get the ball rolling in terms of updates. I mean it probably doesn't really matter since they already got our money and covid helped them make this the #1 AC seller?

I would probably buy DLC if they released it but i would feel super bitter about it, it would feel too much like an app game that you don't really own completely

If you purchase digital games, you're not purchasing the game, only the ability to download and play the game. You're basically buying a license to play.

The same applies to cartridges and/or disc games. Sony, Nintendo, etc can put out an update and block your game as they no longer consider it a license.

You never truly own your games, sadly.

If Nintendo include paid DLC that might turn me away from the game all together. It's not a game worth paying extra money for because I get too bored of the game and they are just price gouging the game at that point.

This is all just random speculation so let's hope it's not true. 😂

as far as I was aware if you're playing offline you should be able to play older ac games forever once you've bought them (I still have my wild world game somewhere that I played for a bit a couple months ago)? shouldn't the same be applicable for this game?

I can still play every 3ds, ds, and dsi game even with wifi on... the online services are disabled but you can still play them if you own the actual cartridge... same applies to digital, its just that on the wii u and the lot some games cannot be bought or redownloaded anymore, which is unfortunate

I don't really think that would be a problem considering it was the same with Earth Day and the Fireworks, it was delivered a week in advance. But I do agree it would be way better if Nintendo laid a plan on how they are working with things and stuff, a schedule to ease us into it. We know they are very secretive however, so it won't happen.

I feel like the Mario set is simply bundled into a "huge update" of sorts, so it might not only be the Mario set. But there's also the possibility that they do it for MAR10 day, they seem to focus all their marketing goals on March since it's the end of the Mario 35th celebration and they'd want to get all the promotion out to rush the last people to buy the limited game and stuff (I assume). I'm not personally thrilled by that set, but if anything it will set a precedent on how remaining sets or new sets will be delivered, I'm assuming, now that's something to be thrilled about, since it won't be your typical holiday way of getting things (which I find kind of annoying, I hope we get the holiday updates out of the way and get to the juicy part)

The first update did good on focusing on smaller holidays, it's sad that it hasn't been like that in the updates that came after, and they for sure weren't as big. I completely understand how sad it is that some people won't enjoy it to the fullest, but it seems to be working for them in a commercial and financial manner, which is what matters to them at the end of the day. Plus updates keep them in the news and the name out there. I assume they'll want to deliver a huge update that gets promoted quite good for the holidays season, when the game has the potential to become the number 1 top-selling game on Switch. I do hope they take that as an opportunity to make the consumers happy with the product to secure future games sales instead of a "we sold it, so we have no reason to put any more effort into it" however.

Yes, it should work as long as the firmware (system's operating system) isn't doesn't have anything updated to it that would block a cartridge or digital copy.

Yes... and no.
If we talking about licensing - you're absolutely right, as rights related to product are limited. True.
However, if we would like to keep "a product" for long time, having still working hardware, nothing can stop you from playing "forever", if nothing will happen in the meantime, such as blocking update, hardware malfunction, deleting software from device etc.

And yet these mega companies have the audacity to get pissy over piracy when they pull stuff like this.

Back on topic, I actually think they are probably going to introduce some paid-DLC in the far future. Maybe 2021-2022. And I think it will be stuff you see in Pocket Camp or whatever it's called, so fancy furniture and whatnot. I really hope by then the bulk of the game will be fully dripfed to us, but I dunno.

I mean, they are fully within their right to be upset at piracy. How would you like it if you made, let's say a chocolate bar, and wanted to sell it for 3$ but everyone only wanted to pay 1.50$ and everyone started stealing your product, rarely every getting a sale?

In the end, they are a company and companies need to make money in order to make more products. This 'video game liscense' thing has been around for years, its nothing new. It is just with recent years, it is easier to 'enforce' as the digital age has taken over.

I don't think DLC will go over well with a lot of people, especially if it's DLC of items that should have been included in the free updates. Like if they add something that lots of people want (aka the Roost) and put it behind a paywall, it's going to piss a lot of people off, especially since we already have to pay to access online as it is.
