here where I live, on New Year's Day many people eat black-eyed peas, collard greens, and some kind of pork (usually how jowls or ham hicks) for good luck in the coming new year...
I've always been told that the peas and greens resemble currency, and that pork is consumed because the hog is an animal that forages and moves forward, so it represents progress...
