Nintendo Direct September 2022 Discussion Thread

although i definitely agree theres a looot of farming sim games out there atm i will eat them up every time haha, i was underwhelmed by sos:poot (and ended up selling my copy oops) but something about this one appeals more to me!! i think maybe the aging of the characters is giving it an edge in my mind, so super excited to see that come about. definitely agree that fae farm caught my eye immediately too! ib intrigued me so i'll see how it is price wise, and i'll probably also check out the harvestella demo but i'm not sold on it entirely.

overall i'm pretty happy! considering in my earlier post i said i was going in with no expectations and just hoped for a cute game, i'd say that was definitely delivered lol

The only new game I see myself playing from what was announced today is The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. I'll also be playing the DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe once it comes out. I suspect my fiancé will try out Rune Factory 3 Special.

This is what I liked:
MOST: Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life

Splatoon 3 Splatfest

REST: Tunic

Fall Guys S2

MK8 New Tracks
Disney Speedstorm

I am especially excited for Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life. I always remembered how much fun I had playing this game (as the girl character since I shared this with my sister). I have tried other games in the series, but they never lived up to this game and I would always end up forgetting it and passing it on. This was the only game in the series I truly liked. I always hoped they would remake this game, but I didn't believe it would happen since this game was before the changes in the company/split. Not once, did I think Season of Stories would be able to get to remake this game. I am excited.

Well, that was certainly a packed Nintendo direct. A lot of big announcements that I know a lot of people have been looking forward to. I personally found there to be nothing at all of interest to me beyond the partial Mario Kart DLC reveal (Great to see Peach Gardens is back!) and the Tears of the Kingdom announcement though, but with that one I'm glad we finally have an official title and a release date!

there was so much in this direct I don’t even know where to start!

Octopath 2! I can’t wait, favorite turn based RPG series

All the farming games! I love them all, Fae farm looks really cool can’t wait to try it out!

Breath of the wild is finally real!

Tales of symphonia remaster! Time to buy it again again I guess!

All in all, this was a solid direct. There were a lot of farm simulator games though and quite a bit of them were from Square Enix. It's like they decided to follow Pokemon's logic, but went overboard. Like what was their thought process? They're dividing up their own sales by doing this.

I played the original Wonderful Life on the Gamecube, but never got that far. It was kind of hard trying to get used to the more realistic look when I was used to Harvest Moon 64 and the GBA versions. I might try it again, it looks a lot better and polished. It was a bit rough in the original, but this one has more of a unique style.

Octopath 2! I can’t wait, favorite turn based RPG series
I don't know about the 1st one, but the way this story is set up reminds me of Live a Live. I just recently played that and it was a very good game. I like that it has a industrial revolution feel to it. That's one of my favorite time periods.

As soon as I saw Colette and her wings, I knew it was Tales of Syphomnia. I've never played any of the other Tales games besides Symphonia, so I don't know how well it is compared to the rest. It's also funny that a bit of the original Teen Titan's cast voices characters from the game.
bamco can milk me for all im worth. i'll buy every single tales of symphonia version
maybe one day they'll give it a proper remake🙏
Yeah, it doesn't really look remastered compared to the Gamecube version, but I am probably just remembering it wrong. Still, I'll wait for more news and probably pick it up later. It just feels underwhelming how little it looks tweaked. It has been 15 years or more since I played it, so it's possible I'm just remembering it wrong.

the only game im excited for is pikmin 4 and that’s enough for me.

Pikmin 4 and Tears of the Kingdom are the only ones I'm interested in. Even then, I'm not sure if I'm gonna get them. I play my Switch exclusively docked and I don't enjoy as much playing SP games there anymore. We'll see once the new Zelda title releases.

The games below are the only games I'm interested in potentially getting when I get a Nintendo Switch in December.
Fire Emblem Engage - There were other games I was getting before, but I'll probably bump those down to get Fire Emblem Engage. I've been waiting for a new Fire Emblem game because I feel like I'm always behind when it comes to the series due to getting the compatible consoles late. It's really one of the main reasons why I've never played Awakening to Three Houses/Three Hopes. Maybe some day I might try to do that. But... I think I'll put a hold on them for now. It's great that there is a new one coming up next year and it seems kind of interesting to me. Hope to see more real soon with this game. Really like how they homage the other game lords.

Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life - I love this game series. Already have Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns and its DLC. I was actually planning to buy Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town before finding out about Fire Emblem Engage. I have the GameCube version of this game along with Another Wonderful Life and I'm not entirely sure if I want to get it just yet. My GameCube and the games still works, so it might be a little hard to justify buying this game. Might wait and see if they plan on making Tree of Tranquility or Animal Parade for the Switch. 'Cause if so then I rather just skip this game and get those instead. Animal Parade is definitely one of my favorites.

Rune Factory 3 Special - The only Rune Factory game that I've played is Rune Factory: Frontier. It was a pretty fun game that I was considering getting more games of the series. I was planning to get Rune Factory 5 as well then Fire Emblem Engage was announced. So... That's on the backburner as well. Rune Factory 3 Special seems really cute and I think I might want to get it at some point.

Atelier Ryza: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key - I've never played the Atelier series, but I've heard about it from other people. Probably should play the other games first if I want to play this one, but I'm not even sure where to start and I wonder how much money that's gonna cost me. 'Cause I do not want to spend that much money if I'm gonna be playing this at some point.

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion - This game is part of Final Fantasy VII. So... I obviously have to get it at some point in time. I actually never finished Crisis Core due to my PSP malfunctioning. It would be great to be able to finish it once I get this game.

Tales of Symphonia Remastered - Tales of Symphonia was my first Tales game. If it wasn't for this game I wouldn't have made the jump to get Tales of the Abyss when I first saw it at a game store. I really like this game, but I'm not sure about getting it yet due to other potential game purchases. Hoping that they could also do Tales of Graces F or Tales of the Abyss for the switch because I would buy them.

Most of the games in the Direct are right up my alley, so I'll just go over the most noteworthy titles. (my poor backlog will never be finished)

- For the Story of Seasons remake and the Tales of Symphonia remaster I already own the originals, but I might get them for the sake of collecting.
- Atelier Ryza 3 is a day one purchase for me. I absolutely adore the first two entries (although I'll probably get it on PlayStation instead since that's where I bought them).
- The new Fire Emblem game looks interesting. I'm glad they're going with a different art direction this time around. It's a massive step up from Three Houses in my opinion. I also like the bold toothpaste haired protagonists. They'll certainly stand out from the rest of the series. The new summoning mechanic won't bother me too much as long as it doesn't ruin the story or make the combat too unbalanced.
- Theatarythm is the biggest announcement for me. I never thought one of my favorite 3DS games would ever get a sequel on the Switch. It looks like they're actually making some of the maps challenging, which fixes my biggest complaint from the first two games.
- Pikmin 4 will probably be good, but RTS games are not my thing. I'm happy for anyone who is looking forward to it though!
- As disappointed as I was with the first game, I'm still hoping the sequel will be something special. The foundation for a great series is there. It just needs the right execution.
- I'm so hyped for the new Zelda game. Everything is improved with sky islands. I'm also looking forward to how they'll expand the preexisting map and add new additions to old areas. In terms of scale this will probably be one of, if not the, largest Switch exclusive to date.

Please, please, please let the Tales of Symphonia remaster be better than the PC version!!! 🙏

It's kind of funny that they're delaying Switch Sports golf all the way to winter. It doesn't even look that special and the game dropped with way less content than Wii Sports in 2006. And telling us to be patient. Like ok? Why not just release the game when it was actually done? Stop with the excuses and telling us what to do. I hate that this is the approach they decided to go with and act like we need to be patient.

Mario Strikers released barebone compared to the Gamecube version and they're slowly trickling new content and characters. It just feels so underhanded to the way they used to do it.

I was hoping for a few more first party surprises after Nintendo skipped doing a major summer Direct, but I'm not really sure what I would have wanted as even if some of the rumors had come true, they wouldn't be surprises at this point.

Overall, a kind of meh direct with a couple "HOOO HOO, OHYES" moments:
  • It's a very good day for people who like farming RPGs... unfortunately, I'm not one of them.
  • Tunic, you are very clearly a game designed by someone who has played Link's Awakening and ONLY Link's Awakening, please go outside and find some other influences for your games other than just going "I LIKE THIS GAME, LET'S RIP IT OFF"
  • Splatoon 3 is great so far, although a couple of things are making me worry about the next AC game (which I still think is coming out about 6 months after Splatoon 3 ends... so about the same amount of time between now and ), so I'm extra glad to hear that the first Splatfest is next week. Generally want to do them all with Splatoon 3, was terrible at it with 2 and only ended up a few of them, and mainly the repeat ones at that. Probably Team Gear, because you can make grub AND fun with gear.
  • N64 NSO's getting a whole load of new games! Unlike with the Wii and Wii U, they're not just going "there's 21 N64 games, let's stop now". The usual suspects are there (TEN EIGHTY SNOWBOARDING, Mario Party 2, Excitebike 64) but the addition of the other 2 N64 Mario Parties, the notoriously hard to emulate Pilotwings 64, and YOUR ACTUAL GOLDENEYE, WITH ONLINE PLAY. Still holding out for some other Wii/Wii U N64 titles, like Super Smash Bros and Donkey Kong 64, but the lineup's going to be genuinely impressive after only 18 months.
  • I am however disappointed they've not announced the Game Boy/Color/Advance NSO app that's been sitting around for quite a long time at this point, especially given the N64 one's getting Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2 and there's a good opportunity to make them link up... given the amount of GC-GBA compatibility that exists, maybe they're holding it back for that? Idk, it's disappointing, but I can dream.
  • Wasn't expecting Nintendo Switch Sports to turn up because I was fully expecting them to just drop the update details at the end of next month (when the collections added in this update run out), to the point of going "no, it's not going to turn up in the direct"... so the fact it DID turn up in the Direct was a bit "oh" for me, especially given the fact golf has been delayed to... not entirely sure, going by the fact it says Winter 2022 in the UK and JP directs, sometime before Christmas to drive up holiday sales? If we go by what the US direct says, holiday 2022, possibly even the end of November for Thanksgiving? Disappointing to say the least, kind of concerning that the update's been delayed on account of the fact we could be without any new collections for a month to six weeks (unless they do a quick stopgap update just to add six new collections)
  • On the plus side, the golf courses look very nice indeed, which for course designs that date back to Golf on the NES, is high praise indeed. A nice midpoint between the Very Saturated Wii Sports courses and the weirdly dark and desaturated Wii Sports Club ones, although I'm thinking the update's been delayed purely to perfect the lighting because it still looks a little "flat" to my eyes (either that or, idk, online's having massive framedrops or something, I don't work at Nintendo nor am I a gamedev)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Wave 3 is scheduled for December, and Merry Merry Mountain has done the impossible and... actually looks pretty nice! I still think this is exhibit A in "why defining a game as good purely because it has the most Content isn't necessarily a good thing" given they're still courses very much designed with Mario Kart Tour rather than Mario Kart 8 in mind, both in course design and texture quality, but it looks much nicer than the earlier waves did. Peach Gardens looks a little more like the earlier waves, but even so... not as bad as before?
  • OK, back to something more positive: THE UTTER MADMEN ACTUALLY MADE PIKMIN 4 AND IT'S COMING OUT NEXT YEAR, MY THEORY THAT THEY DECIDED TO PORT PIKMIN 3 TO GAUGE INTEREST WAS CORRECT
  • HAL, although it's pretty much the only thing you do, how have you managed to release 3 Kirby games in the space of a year?
  • The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom... this is why the UK feed wasn't live, wasn't it? As someone for who actually playing Breath Of The Wild got through the lull of that first ACNH winter, I'm very glad to see it's finally coming out next May (although given it's been 18 months since ACNH's end by that point, we're honestly more likely to get a trailer for the next AC game over a Splatoon/Zelda "guys, we said that was the last one, but..." update, which is sad)
  • Bit disappointing that they've not just gone "screw it, WW/TP HD ports" to fill this year's Zelda Gap, though. Not to mention the fact this year's the first year in Switch history without a Wii U port. Lads, you've got those two, Yoshi's Wooly World, Xenoblade X and if I'm feeling especially generous, Star Fox Zero. Are we going to get a cheeky wee shadowdrop or something? Please?
  • So, in conclusion, once again the same mixture of YES, YES and utter pain I've come to expect from Nintendo. The Switch doesn't seem like it's going away until at least 2025, so I look forward to what it's going to offer in future, especially given that next year there's a new Pikmin game, I can play 1080 Snowboarding on it sometime in the next 3-9 months, and there's a big new Zelda game out. But on the other hand, this year still seems like it's meh for me apart from Nintendo Switch Sports and Splatoon 3, so... might try tackling my backlog?

wasn’t expecting pikmin 4 at all but I cried at the announcement LMAO I AM OVER THE MOON AND THE TINY BIT OF FOOTAGE LOOKS GORGEOUS

also, a message for the FE team… what are you actually doing where is the customisation do u rly think I wanna spend hours playing this franchise I love dressed as an anime ass switch joycon clown dummy ugly looking weeb.. AT LEAST LET ME BE A LOW-KEY WEEB

I'm really happy to see Mario Party 2 finally coming to the Expansion pack! Now, if only they could add Banjo-Tooie...

I could never get into the main Pikmin games, but I might pick up Pikmin 4 at some point. I do love the Pikmin themselves.

If Faefarm is similar enough to Fantasy Life I’ll definitely be picking it up.

Haven’t had my Fantasy Life itch scratched since… Fantasy Life.

Stardew Valley was my first and last farming simulator (depending if I decide to pick up Faefarm). Not really a genre I’d play over and over and over again, so this Direct didn’t do much for me.
