Nintendo has revealed the Nintendo Switch 2

one thing that worries me is the kickstand. I'm afraid the way it was designed means it would snap off at any moment with only tape placing it back together.
This is something I thought of when the trailer showed it off. As someone who owns an OLED Switch, I think the stand on my system is perfect. I really disliked the original Switch’s stand (THE RECTANGLE KNOB-) so I really don’t see why they seemingly made this one inferior to the OLED stand?

I can understand why some would feel underwhelmed by the official reveal. This console does look very similar to the first one, but I’m still going to applaud Nintendo for not repeating the Wii U route and giving it a simple sequel name. Yes, it’s not all that exciting, but it’s definitely effective enough to move units. Heck, look at the PS2. That console is the best-selling of all time, and that was backed by a massive marketing campaign that worked. Repeating the original Switch’s success can be a challenge, so we’ll have to see what kind of first party games are planned to release on or near launch, as well as if online services will feature significant improvements. It’s going to be a long wait to April.

In my opinion, the joycon drift and outdated internal specs really needed to be addressed, and it appears that the joycon part was improved. We have yet to see how well it performs certain 3rd party titles compared to competitor consoles, and while I don’t expect most Switch 2 versions of games to play 100%, I’m at least hoping that lag and battery issues will be minimized when in portable mode. Backwards compatibility is also a plus, and while not significant these days, the 3.5mm audio jack was kept.

Keeping my fingers crossed for something AC-related to be announced. I’m fully expecting a ton of Mario stuff due to the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Brothers, but we shall see.

The OLED stand is perfect and a huge improvement over the original, flimsy design. It didn’t need to be changed, but I’m hoping this new design is made out of some metal material.

the reveal today feels like they were saying “okay everyone it’s real, now you guys can stop talking about it and shut up.”

leakers were 100% right about how it would look and function. i wouldn’t be surprised if the rumored launch titles are also real too, because they got MK9 right. it’s definitely a launch title because it would be the dumbest thing ever if nintendo was like “oh yeah we showed you your beloved MK9 during the reveal but you have to wait another two months for it because it’s not ready yet.”

I think Switch 2 is honestly a fine name, and I love the appearance of the Switch, so I'm happy that the Switch 2 looks similar. I'm a little worried about how the Joy-Cons click in compared to them sliding in with the Switch, but I'm sure they've got it figured out. I like that it has a kickstand, but I agree that the OLED kickstand looks more durable. Hopefully it's sturdy, though I don't think I'd use it too often regardless. I don't mind the new appearance of the Joy-Cons, but I do hope that they offer some more interesting/fully-coloured Joy-Cons sold separately! While I do like the sleek black/grey, I want the excuse to get a colourful vibrant pink/green or pastel set like the Switch had!

I'm glad they confirmed backwards compatibility. I'm confused about how the mouse function might be used, but I guess we'll see! I really love the Switch as a console, so if the Switch 2 is just a better/more powerful version of the Switch, I'll be happy. I've never bought a console on release date, but I plan to preorder the Switch 2 as soon as it's available.

I was hoping for the Nintendo Direct to be a little sooner than April, but I'm still super excited! 🥳🥳

I don't plan on purchasing the Nintendo Switch 2 anytime soon, but I'd be fine with getting one if my Nintendo Switch ever breaks or gets too old to use anymore.

The logo looks a bit lazy, to be honest, and there's a chance people getting the Nintendo Switch 2 confused for the original due to having only played with the first one but they've never heard of the second one.

It's a good thing that it appears that they seem to have finally improved the joycon drift, yay!

  • FINALLY! Just over 2 weeks into 2025, we've got an announcement! It's here! It's happening! It's... basically exactly what the leakers said it was, but that's exciting regardless!
  • calling it the Switch 2 was absolutely the right call, but what the hell is that logo? It doesn't quite communicate that it's the Switch 2 as well as it should, as the 2 should probably be next to the word "Nintendo Switch" imo (or maybe incorporated into the Joy-Con graphic that's above the word? idk, could look a little ugly). Maybe I'm thinking about it in console terms too much and should probably think of it like an iPhone or iPad (where it's clear it's the same basic device, but the name and branding are pretty much the same), but still... it does muddy the message a little bit. It's in no way the same kind of trainwreck as the Wii U, where even the announcement trailer's not explicitly saying "this is the next Nintendo console", but in all honesty, they could have done another couple of drafts of the logo.
  • I like having the red and blue as accent colours on the new Joy-Cons, but I'd be lying if I didn't want an option to get solid black Joy-Cons. However, (even speaking as someone whose Switch Joy-Cons are this colour) it's much better than the grey of the OG Switch, as grey... isn't sleek black, is it? It's grey, which is all things considered, a fairly boring colour for electronics. No wonder the neon colours became de rigeur for Joy-Cons and the grey got phased out!
  • that little ribbon where they connect on the new rails looks really fragile, tho. Having the magnets on there to lock the Joy-Cons in might alleviate things somewhat, but I fear that the Nintendo Service Centre's got its work cut out for it with that
  • ditto the new kickstand, if it's metal like the one on the OLED I'm less worried about it, but if it's plastic like the one on the OG Switch...
  • the joysticks do look fairly substantial, however. Hopefully less prone to drift than the OG Switch.
  • I've heard varying reports about a microphone, but that doesn't appear to be the case with the new Joy-Cons, which is disappointing imo (the megaphone's not returning to Animal Crossing any time soon)
  • they teased the mouse functionality for the new Joy-Cons! I love it, it's simultaneously moving in a more Gamer direction whilst also being something quite leftfield and quite Nintendo. I think that there's a very good chance this is going to be used in the next Animal Crossing game in some way, shape or form (and if I'm being honest, it's probably the one thing that's making me go "maybe they're not going to wait until the Switch 2 Lite comes out, maybe this is actually a late 2025-early 2026 game", however, it's also going to be perfect for stuff like Splatoon, Metroid Prime 4, 3D Zelda or Pikmin)
  • this is also how they're going to do DS NSO, isn't it? I look forward to being able to actually play Wild World online, as I never got the chance to back when Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection was a thing
  • however, it does look more comfortable than the OG Switch. I'm not expecting the most ergonomic device because at the end of the day, it's essentially just a Gamer iPad, but the new Joy-Cons look nicely rounded to me?
  • the only new game shown off is Mario Kart, which is both slightly disappointing (a new Mario Kart is inevitably going to turn up in the first couple of years of a Nintendo console's lifespan, and I wanted to see a slightly fuller picture of what's happening in the near future for Nintendo) and very exciting (it's the first proper Mario Kart game in a decade!). It's very much a post-Wonder Mario game (the art style of the characters is moving towards something more influenced by the 2D Mario art, which is such a relief after two decades of a slightly sterile-looking Mario, and I'm very here for it)
  • I thought the Direct was only three weeks away because I forgot I was watching the UK trailer, but it's in just under three months, which is ages away (however, it's also a similar amount of time as the gap between the Switch's reveal and the presentation where they went into greater detail about what was happening). Hopefully we get some form of Direct in a few weeks for whatever's happening on the OG Switch until... April? May? Christmas?

I completely forgot that there was a reveal today until one of my coworkers told me about it. I think it's okay. Didn't really wow me since I only expected it to be bigger and more powerful (though, by how much actually?). It seems like the 'click' sound we know and love when slotting in the joycons is replaced with a 'clap' sound.

As for the naming, I'm not really beat up about that. I'm sure we've all seen how the Wii U failed horribly since some people genuinely thought how the gamepad is an additional accessory to the Wii (how it was marketed also contributed to the failure, but still). Naming consoles with a number isn't anything new as we've seen Playstation do that with their PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5. Heck, even Apple names their iPhones with numbers too.

Will I get it on launch? No. Will I get it later down the line? Possibly yes. Nintendo with their exclusive franchises will give me the push to buy the Switch 2 in the future, especially if it's Zelda and Animal Crossing. And even then it'll be quite a long wait.

I get why many people are underwhelemed. Most likely because of the leak so the surprise factor was taken out. But personally, it’s just DS to 3DS.

Honestly, I’m excited for it because for someone who doesn’t wanna buy a Steam Deck and highly prefer portable play, this is awesome. Many games that were previously exclusive to powerful consoles like the rumored FF7 Remake/Rebirth are gonna get ported. Also, I am really looking forward to the new generation of Nintendo games.

Furthermore, we really don’t know what the Switch 2 can really do. So I’m eagerly looking forward to the Direct on April.

As far as the console name goes, I get why many people are so disappointed with it. But again, 3DS is just a DS with 3 attached to it. 😛

Regarding the future of Animal Crossing, I just want it to be the definitive experience that I expected from New Horizons.

The ones that didn't (like the DSi/DS Lite, that sort of thing) came out shortly after the prior console and were clearly not meant to replace them--most people only had one iteration of the Nintendo DS.
Actually I was thinking about the entirety of the DS family tree (spanning from DS to 3DS) and to me it did feel like they were replacing the old-gen DS with new-gen 2/3DS. Like Pokemon, you can't play SM/USUM on the standard DS, you'd need the newer gen DS. It's why I have both a regular DS and a 3DS. Of course, you didn't need to buy all iterations of the DS family, but somewhere in between they definitely made newer games incompatible to older DS consoles to make way for the 2/3DS era.

Anyway my opinion of it UHH I'm not particularly excited about new consoles in general, all I really want is new games, so I'm not going to buy this one immediately. Took me 3 years since release to buy a Switch as I felt I wasn't missing out on anything prior to ACNH. Right now the only teased game was MK which I'm not particularly excited about so I'll definitely wait. Plus I know it is gonna be expensive so I'll need to save up. (Gone are the days when I was a child with a free pass to any single gift for Christmas lol)

As for the naming, I'm not too bothered by it idk. This is just a new-gen Switch so I don't see how else they should've named it. NEW Nintendo Switch? I guess? I don't recall all consoles but the ones I remember were GBC -> GBA, Nintendo DS -> 2/3DS, Wii -> Wii U (which I have read was a mistake in naming lol). I mean even the playstation just names their consoles PS1 2 3 4 5 and people understand it so I'm not too phased.

The one problem I have is that now it's bigger, so like..... heavier? Bulkier? I know the 3DS was also way bigger but since you could fold it, it was still compact enough. The NSW was already kinda a pain to bring around for me because it was so long, and now it's longer 😭 Oh well. Minor issue.

Anyway, cool console! I like how they made the joycons black, I kinda hated the red/blue ones because it felt too bright/neon for me. I love the sleek minimalist color of black! Can't wait for the new games, hoping ACNH won't be for a while because I wanna save up. Splatoon most likely won't be for a year or two considering it hasn't been 3 years since Splatoon 3, we just got a DLC last year, splatfests are still happening, and the game is barely dead yet. ACNH and Splatoon are my awaited games so I shall definitely hold for now.

I'm looking forward to it, hoping the kickstand is a bit stronger that it seems, and that there's no drift.

Love mariokart, so it'll be nice to have a new one, and I really want to make a new new horizons island. Really hoping the backwards compatibility applies to ac.

I'm a little excited, despite how little we know so far. Other than it looking the same as the switch 1 (hard to believe that's a term now, it looks nice. Great to know it has both a new Mario Kart and Switch 1 compatibility. My brother is hoping for that joycon mouse feature for games like Mario Paint and such. I certainly hope it's much more powerful than it's predecessor.

god if they announce virtual gamecube console i will fall to my knees wherever i am at that day please make this a reality
That would actually be awesome. I'd love to be able to play Pokemon XD without spending like $200 on the original.

How is this going to affect the Stalk Market

...

Also on a more on-topic note, the related direct is gonna be on my birthday so if they don't announce a new Mario Maker or Tomodachi game I'm going to start screaming

The new Mario Kart looks cute…if it gets good reviews I might check it out.

But my number 1 Mario Kart game will ALWAYS be Mario Kart Wii. 😭 I still have the poster, steering wheel, and strategy guide!

So I've been thinking deeply about the Switch 2 and I am just going to be brutally honest I am not too interested. I mean I just want to see what makes it different from the past switch. They will have to convince me if it had improved online, the joycon drift is finally fixed, improved frame rate, and if they plan on adding GameCube and Wii games. The Switch 2 is a bit bigger than the first one so there should be no excuse for the games to perform poorly.

My main concerns are the battery life because I was recently playing Ace Attorney and about 45 minutes my Switch lite was at 50% battery. I don't want to be playing a game and having to worry about plugging in my Switch every 1 hour. Also I have to wonder if you can transfer your save data from Switch games to the switch 2 so as long as it's backwards compatible which they said "certain" games would not be so that has me concerned.

I don't want to sound negative or feel like I am hating on the Switch 2 but I am just wanting more information on it. How is the performance, online experience, battery life, what games are only coming to switch 2, and finally the price. Until then I will hold off on getting the Switch 2 since I am still playing alot of games on my Switch Lite.

If Miis come back for this newest Mario Kart, I would like their costumes to be handled differently. I liked how MK8 gave us multiple outfits, but I hated how the player was stuck with the helmet.

I'd like something similar to Mario Maker 2 in that there would be a selection of headwear, tops, bottoms, and bodysuits. The player starts with the standard racer outfit with the helmet as a separate article of clothing as stated. As the player achieves certain accomplishments or spends coins depending on the specialness of the clothing, the player gets more clothing to use to customize their character.

Speaking of coins, there would be a shop where the clothes are available. Kart parts would also be able in the shop. I don't much care for the randomness of the MK7 and MK8. Maybe if it was something like SSBU where there's every day there's random items in the shop?

Yes, I specified the DSi/DS Lite because those weren’t really new consoles. I do think of the 3DS as an actual new console entirely distinct from the regular DS. I was actually telling a friend today that my best case scenario for the Switch 2 is a 3DS situation where it initially looks quite similar to the preceding console, but the upgrades in power and user friendliness lead to a really excellent game library and a player experience that is substantially superior.

They've honestly perfected console-handheld hybrids as a concept, so I didn't expect anything too different. Main thing they could do to differentiate this from the OG switch is by improving the hardware and adding a few new gimmicks, just like how they went from the DSi to 3DS. Seeing how a lot of the leaks were right, improved power and performance looks to be in the cards!

Them fixing the drift problem with the joycons alone has me excited, but I'm also really hopeful that the better hardware also fixes a lot of the lag in Switch games specifically!

Main things I'm looking for is performance and the Nintendo games for it, but my biggest wish for this console is that we finally get some customization options for the UI like we did for the 3DS.

Reading the comments, I feel like people are forgetting 3DS and New 3DS, which is a more accurate comparison for Switch to Switch2 than ds to 3ds.
