Opinion on dresses?

I LOVE dresses–pants aren't super comfortable for me, so I wear skirts and dresses 95% of the time. But goodness gracious you should wear whatever you want! Especially when you're a fully grown adult, you should absolutely be able to wear whatever makes you comfortable.

some people look better in them, and some just dont look right in em lol that's all I got to say

I'm very tomboyish and didn't wear dresses until my thirties. Now I have several. I like them now.

I will admit some of the reason I finally got into them was social and moral pressure. In some very conservative Christian communities, which I stumbled into a few years ago (and which I'm no longer a part of -- I'm in a more moderately conservative Christian community now), it's frowned upon for women to wear pants, and the dresses must be 'modest.' I honestly didn't know that was a thing in some circles until the last few years. My parents always identified as conservative, but I've since learned I was raised much more freely than a lot of other much more conservative people. They thought it was fine I was a tomboy and never fretted over women's clothing the way much more conservative people do. It's funny what you can discover when you grow up and get immersed in communities beyond the quirks of your own family.

Okay so this has been an ongoing debate between me and my dad for a while, but especially in the last few months. I think dresses are really aesthetically pleasing and I love to see other people wear them, but I absolutely HATE wearing them myself. To me they're uncomfortable and most are way too revealing (I'm very modest). I'm more the kind of woman who likes to wear dress pants and a nice sweater, dress shirt, or even a suit jacket. But lately my dad has been getting very angry with me about this (which is ridiculous because I'm 20 1/2 years old).

For example, I'm playing a jury tomorrow (basically my final piano exam) and I have to look nice and presentable. Well, I'm going to wear dress pants, flats, and my nice pink sweater, along with a necklace and earrings. But my dad absolutely hates this. He wants me to wear a dress which *he* thinks is nice, but is very awkward to sit in. He said that "wearing a dress will make [me] more elegant" as if elegance in piano performance is solely based on visual appeal. Plus, my body type does not look good in a dress. When I told him I wasn't going to wear a dress, he got really mad and fussy with me (though tbh my dad has a lot of issues that I won't go into here).

TL;DR I believe that women should not have to wear a dress just to visually impress people. That kind of ideology is very frustrating and restricting in my view.

What does everyone else think? What are your views on women wearing dresses or dress pants/a suit?
(Btw please don't turn this into a nasty discussion. Just want to get some input here.)
I don't like wearing dresses at all, but I love wearing them in video games for some reason. Dresses just aren't very comfortable irl

In my opinion dresses are horrible, and I feel the same way about skirts. I'm more of a tomboy and to me dresses feel very uncomfortable and there is never a dress that I might consider to wear. Lately, my mom has been pressuring me to buy tons of dresses, and whenever I tell her I hate dresses she just blows it off in a way.

To be honest, I've always liked how tuxes look and I've been wanting to try one. But that will never happen, knowing my family.

I love dresses since they're so comfortable (especially compared to skinny jeans which is what I would typically wear) but it's annoying when it's windy outside. My favourite kinds of dresses are skater dresses, love the way they look!

I think people should wear whatever makes them comfortable. Personally, I like wearing dresses, especially during the summer. Plus, they’re easy to put on when I’m being lazy or in a hurry. I just slip it on and off I go. Lately though I’ve been living in lounge pants, so there you go. Comfort above all else for me.

I know it's been a while since your initial post, but when I was in college, I used to hang out in the music department and became friend with the music majors. The women there were all shapes and sized and they loved wearing different things! From "big" girls wearing dresses or dress pants to "small" girls wearing dresses or dress pants lol
Me personally, I like dresses as long as they have some sort of sleeve, I've also found rompers to be a favorite since they look like dresses but are actually shorts, so windy days are no big deal. I've actually been looking into getting a suit to wear for special occasions because I think they look good on people, it has nothing to do with my personality or size.
There are MANY ways to look professional and elegant without having to wear a dress!!

Honestly are used to hate the way I looked in dresses, but now I just find them the most comfortable piece of clothing to wear LOL. I find myself picking dresses over pants and a T-shirt so often, because they are just so comfy and airy. Also, I think it might be something like wearing glasses and then taking them off and feeling like you look different, because the more I’ve worn dresses, the more I love the way I look in them:)

no one should be forced to wear anything they don't feel comfy in, i'm so tired of stupid society rules. As if there aren't other elegant clothes. I personally love dresses and wish i could wear them everywhere but i feel like everyone stares cause they're not very common where i live... just let people wear what they want, jeez ;o;

I never really thought hard about it, but I'm actually not comfortable wearing dresses or skirts. They look nice, so I wear them in games like Animal Crossing, but I rarely ever wear them in real life.

I love how dresses look, but I don't like wearing them. I wish I did, because finding dresses (and skirts) that fit would be a lot easier than finding pants, plus a lot of the shoes I like look nicer with dresses and skirts than the clothes I like to wear.

I totally get that. I get comments because I like to wear boots with heels. Not even anything crazy, just a 2-3 inch heel, but nobody normally wears stuff like that wear I live.

i wear dresses all the time BUT i used to play cello semi-professionally and would always have worn dress pants for recitals

I love the way dresses look, but I’m definitely more comfortable in pants. I always feel like if I dress up, people stare more and it makes me self-conscious, so I stick to jeans and long cardigans most of the time. I totally agree too, sitting in dresses is the worst. Plus, my legs are super long, so any dress looks a little shorter on me and it’s even more of a struggle.

I think dresses look really really pretty on other people, but they just aren't my style. I'm very similar to you where I like to dress much more modestly and I prefer to wear pants and a nice shirt. For my NHS induction I wore some nice pants with a mens dress shirt (plaid) and flats. I was one of two girls who didn't wear a dress and the other girl wore a pantsuit (I would also like to add that my teacher said I looked cute in my outfit ;w; ). With that being said, my parents have never forced or urged me to wear a dress and I believe a woman or man should wear what makes them comfortable whether that be in pants or a dress C:

I do like dresses, but I feel weird in them sometimes (no matter what) even though I always wear shorts underneath.
Although in most games, my character tends to wear these kinds of clothing.

⬆️
This is basically me. I'm mostly jeans, t-shirt and baseball cap 95% of the time. Wearing a dress makes me feel like I have to put more effort into my look (leave hair down, some makeup, ect).

I love the way they look and they can be super pretty and elegant but i dont like wearing them unless it is for an event or something. The last time i wore one was on a wedding a long time ago.
