Someone took some screenshots from a Nintendo Direct conference with new AC3DS photos.

A portrait of Tortimer is in the background on one of them. He is alive! Or dead. But I bet alive.
Here's my guess: Nintendo didn't get rid of him--technically. I bet they bring him in the first part of the game, but he takes a vacation and the character is appointed mayor. At least he's not completely booted out of the series like some previous characters. Also, there is apparently a new cat character (in the photo with the billboard). Nintendo is really exciting me with these photos along with all of the others.

Thanks and bye!! :D

I'M so excited i don't even know what to say 8gyrhjkrffffhjiirrtDDFTFGH!

Maybe he just retired since it isn't in Nintendo's nature to kill off characters... OR IS IT?! DA Da DA DUN!!!

I don't care about Tortimer. Like I don't see what the big deal about him is. Maybe it's just me...

My idea I was telling to my friend was was that he lives on the island now, since he's too old. And they kept his picture there since he was such a good mayor. :)

As much as it would be nice for Tortimer to retire, I'm pretty sure he's not going to be there. Nintendo pretty much has already killed him off. In City Folk, he didn't do anything, ever. Other than events. The rest of the time he was sleeping.

But if you want to be positive and keep to hoping he will be in the game as a character, it's just as likely that he retired and called you in to replace him and might give you tips or something.

Well, I haven't been posting for a while but now here I goo!! :p
I personally think that this Tortimer picture will just end up as an "Easter Egg"... but I hope that the idea that he lives on that island becomes true!

I don't think they will kill him off, maybe not say it exactly, but i still doubt they would.
He'll probably leave a letter or something explaining his absence.

I think the idea was that you took over after Tortimer left on Vacation and never returned.
(Gulliver the alien Abducted him! LOL J/K)
Anyway the picture does lead to questions.
Maybe tortimer's taken over a holiday or something?
Like Acorn day when he put the weird big acorn on and tryed to foul us into thinking he wasn't himself.

He never did anything ever in any game

Acorn Furniture handout (aporn day), Mush Furniture handout ( mushroom hunt), Fourth of July item handout, and New Years T-shirt handout.
Those were his main things that he did.
Oh don't let us forget the whole " Where should I place the new bridge? " thing.
Though true these were nothing compared to what the 3DS version says you get to do as mayor.

I'm also partial to the idea that he's retired and living somewhere near the town. I mean if he's dead ( No :'( ) or Moved away, who will give us presents on event days?

with logic, he did more in WW, then CF came, he got older, and did less. He didn't do acorns in CF. He pretty much just handed out sparklers, leafs, and other event items, he never handled anything or did anything that just give out items...
"They mayor should be out for his daily walk now"...

yeah good one Tom Nook. He was only out of his office at the start of the game...

@Rooster: his avatar is a screen shot of the character emerging after diving in the AC3DS trailer

The problem isn't that he did or didn't do something, the game just wouldn't feel like Animal Crossing without him. I mean, ya, you don't see him much, but whenever I hear of Animal Crossing, I think of Tortimer asking me who I "respect most" when I first came to a town. I felt so happy when I heard that because it's like starting a new life and that Tortimer would always be in the town. If he is not in the next game, it'll be quite sad. I hope he lives on the island as his new home or something. That's a great idea. I just hope hes in the game, at least.

The entire game isn't going to feel like Animal Crossing. Just about everything that was Animal Crossing is now different.
As I've said before, many times. This game is going to take a lot of people by surprise, the developers have stated just about as many times as I have that the game is a completely new, fresh start and that many if not most of the things in the past games will be changed in some way or another.
As for Tortimer, if he were in the game then they probably wouldn't have made a portrait of him in the office. It wouldn't make sense to if you can just go and see him.

I disagree. The portrait could just as well be their to commemorate his long time service as mayor to the town. There are so many other possibilities regarding why Tortimer is no longer mayor. To me it just seems so un-nintendo like to kill of an old turtle that has been their since the very beginning of animal crossing, and not to mention extremely uncreative.
For instance, perhaps now he is travelling the world on the train, stopping here and there to drop of special event items, or maybe living on the island, in the town, or even as a new neighbour :p.
All these ideas just seem a little more colourful than killing him off, or having him excluded from the game altogether (minus the picture).

Still going to be an awesome game though : D
