First Entry - Sweets
Final2.jpg

I made heart shaped sugar cookies, but that felt too basic so I also made some checkerboard cookies. I never made them before so it was a fun experiment. I tried my best to mold the two logs, but it's trickier than it looks so that's why some of the checkerboard cookies look a bit different. I first learned about these cookies from Pikmin (the succulent mattress!) and since then I always wanted to make them myself. They taste really good! It needed to be Valentine themed so that's where the hearts came into!

Everyone's already echoed what I also wanted to say, anywhere you can paint/draw is a suitable art medium! Sleepey's entry didn't seem haphazardly made, I can tell there was effort and I can vouch it takes effort to draw on these kinda of devices!!

I remember drawing a post in splatoon 3 before, didn't have a stylus so I just used my finger to draw on the Switch lol. Definitely took me an hour, probably almost 2 hours, since it was so difficult trying to get the pose right, coupled with only a single layer, very very limited pen & eraser sizes, and my big finger 😭 Even if it looks simple it's no easy feat!

(not an entry lol)

Hoping there's a consideration for these kinds of things :] I don't want anyone to feel bad for not having other drawing materials on hand, or being more comfortable with one drawing medium over another!
Seeing you share a piece of your art on the switch gave me a push to share some of my old 3DS stuff so I'll be sharing a few of mine below. It's always super inspiring to see works done on something like a 3DS and a Switch, since they're not typical devices or tools you'd expect someone to make art with, yet so many creative people have proved otherwise. 🥹

Everything I'm showing is about a decade or so old (2015-2016) but I mean idk, I feel like for what I had available at the time, this wasn't low effort at all, and I would have been pretty discouraged if I entered something like these for an official TBT event only to be told they wouldn't qualify solely because I drew them on a 3DS. I tried to include a bit of a range to show the versatility for what my 3DS and the Colors! 3D app was able to do for me.

I was hesitant about posting again (if staff remove this so be it), but I really just wanted to expand a little more on this topic and hope my input can be seen by other members. I truly believe that making a creative piece with an uncommon tool/application like your 3DS, Switch, phone, or whatever you have, can often take more effort because of the limitations they have! You often have to make up for the lack of tools in other ways, and I hope no one is discouraged, because you definitely don't need some fancy drawing tablet, popular applications, or even traditional art materials to fuel your creative outlet. 💕

I've always enjoyed TBT events, and want to thank staff again for using their free time to make these a reality. The creative ones especially are what I'm usually the most passionate for, so I also ask for more consideration going forward on what is considered "low effort" and what kind of tools can or can't be used.

I just realized that my entry didn’t include progress pics. I didn’t even see the “progress pics” part in the rules. Will my entry get accepted since that rule was in my blind spot? Is it okay to go back and add progress pics?

Hey. I can absolutely make something else if you want me to, but I find this a bit hurtful and kinda like embarrassing to be told this publicly?

It actually took “effort” and a long time to make because of the imprecise nature of the 3DS touch screen. I shaded in the entire screen red with a pen tool that doesn’t adjust for width, used the eraser tool that is wider than the rest of the pen tools as a “white pen,” and used the thinner red pen to correct for places where the eraser was imprecise. I thought it could at least be appreciated that my lettering looks very nice on the medium I used, and I used the 3DS to evoke nostalgia on an Animal Crossing forum whose livelihood kinda once revolved around the 3DS.
I had no intention of embarrassing you. After not accepting your entry once, you tried again to re-submit it, so I had to elaborate. While I can appreciate this is not an easy medium to work in, the final result does not meet the expected standard for this event - and the reason for that is very likely the limitations of using Animal Crossing: New Leaf, for example the small canvas and the level of detail that can be incorporated. For context, the examples Chere. posted above would be accepted, but they've used an application that has allowed them to include significantly more detail.

You are welcome to submit a new entry. I'd advise following one of the examples suggested in the OP: e.g. a Valentine's card or Valentine's Party invitation.

@Chris, does the 2D craft have to fit a 'decoration for the Valentine's Day Party' theme? Or could I just draw the TBT Valentine's Day Party itself with characters attending it?

Sorry to bother, but I see that everyone is drawing cards, and I wanted to make sure.
It does need to fit the Valentine's Party decor theme. Although I think you could make this work by drawing / putting a physical picture frame around it, depicting it as a photograph, or stylising it as a Polaroid.

This is really sad and yet not surprising to see.
Odd to say you'd only accept a 3DS entry if it was done in a different program. It feels like you're saying you're okay with accepting Procreate entries but not MS Paint entries.

I think more constructive feedback towards sleepey's current submission would be helpful. Cause it's sounds like you're saying TBT's standard means it has to be detailed or look a certain way. Which is odd because throughout all the events I've participated in, I've seen submissions that would not have fit under "TBT's expected standard" get accepted.
I would also like to point out that sleepey's submission has the same amount of effort as approved submissions/materials in this thread.

I've always thought that as long as people dedicate their time to the piece, it was considered effort. And that TBT's "effort" rule was just to keep entries that have literally no thought or care out of the event. (i.e.: writing "happy v-day" with a #2 pencil on a random receipt) But it sounds like that's not the case.

An easier cop would've just been to say that sleepey's submission didn't fit the "Valentines Party" theme despite it being a Valentines day card.

(edited this heavily because I missed the point big time earlier and wasn't making sense)

I'd recommend reading Chere's post again because I think you missed the point of her post.

You were not clear about why my submission was not accepted. It sounded to me that you wanted something “exported,” and I did so.

If you would like to attempt lettering in a primitive application, I welcome you, then, to judge the amount “detail” that goes into it. I would also ask you to judge the level of “detail” put into it against some of the other paper crafts submissions that you deemed acceptable.

I made my submission, and I will not be making another craft. I had fun with a spark of inspiration and feeling of gratitude I had towards this community for welcoming me back after being inactive for some time.

"For example the small canvas and the level of detail that can be incorporated." What does this... mean? Art being on a smaller and/or pixelated canvas doesn't mean it's any less detailed if that's what you're implying? I hope I'm wrong there 'cause otherwise you've disrespected a huge portion of the art community including every single pixel/sprite artist. That little bar with the hearts and dots alone is an impressive detail, and was probably frustrating to make perfect. Not to mention that cursive L not being misaligned or otherwise throwing off the composition at all!

Since others are showing past submissions, I also want to showcase mine for the Christmas card event in 2024 that was accepted:
o2eEaNj.jpg

That little card was two sticky notes glued together and two dimes tall, and it took me maybe 10 minutes. What makes a 3ds screen any less acceptable? Because it's certainly not the canvas size. Plenty of other users do quicker, larger, less detailed doodles just for participation and they're accepted pretty hastily.

When I was pursuing my art degree something that was nailed into my and my peers' heads when we would have critiques is that unless you know someone well enough, it is impossible to judge the amount of effort behind a piece, because everyone's pace and skill level is different. The "level of detail" has nothing to do with effort, which is the point you stressed in your two prior posts. I hope this judgement is just ill-informed because the jump in reasoning between the initial rejection and this post really gives off the impression of being biased against an artist for doing something different, which in art spaces is widely celebrated not punished.

Seconding the "it's impossible to know how much effort was used" in art.

I know for other, more talented members, looking at my digital art might seem like it was a 10 minute affair, but it honestly takes me hours since I only have a casual knowledge of the art program I use, and I'm just a slow person in general. But I'm very meticulous with my work, even if it comes across as clumsy, and if someone were to call my art 'low effort' or 'simple scribbles', it would really bum me out.

I feel like, so long as the entry isn't just a literal squiggle on a piece of paper, if it meets the theme, you should be golden. But that's just my opinion.

Sorry to pile on, but I think it's strange to reject a digital art submission just because it was made in a program with a low ceiling 🤔 Hypothetically if sleepey's submission had been crafted traditionally rather than drawn digitally on the 3DS it most likely would have been accepted.. That just doesn't seem justifiable to me.

Also, this is an Animal Crossing forum, I think art submissions made on the 3DS and Switch (ACNH bulletin board for example) would really fit the overall theme of this website. I think it would be charming to see more art submissions of that kind. Imagine an art activity exclusive to the ACNH bulletin board, that could be kinda cool (though maybe infuriating for some 😅)

Also also... just look what Kekeflipnote can do with Flipnote studio

A little disheartened to see that part of my previous post was misinterpreted and used as a means to what—in my opinion— sort of belittles sleepey's entry and feels as if my post wasn't even read properly. I'm not quite sure how it went from "3DS is not a suitable medium for creating your entry." to saying that some of my old works would have been accepted? It feels like a contradiction to the earlier statement and really comes across like cherry-picking. I already made a whole statement in my previous post, but to elaborate further, the point of me even showing my older works was to 1. Provide some examples of works done on a medium that— at the time of posting— was said to not be an acceptable medium, and 2. Shed light to how unconventional mediums/tools are viable for creative outlets even if they are limiting. I'll reiterate once again that often, the more limitations a medium/application/tool has, the more effort you need to put into your piece/project.

I'm guessing that skarmoury's piece wouldn't have met the requirements either, which makes no sense to me given how much time she spent on it. The amount of time spent on an entry is a huge factor for what I define as "effort", so I'm confused as to why this doesn't seem to be the case here. Because that begs the question— what do staff count as "effort"? If the way to go about judging "effort" is the final result or a member's skill level, that just isn't right, and severely undermines a lot of members and their entries imo.

Also just had to say I agree with everything you said but this stuck out to me since I was actually going to mention Kekeflipnote in my previous post as well! They're such a great example of what can be done with an app like flipnote. 🩵

Just wanna say that an app that can make you put less detail doesn't mean it's not efforted! I shared my own splatoon drawing above which I can say is a piece I am really proud of given the limitations, but in case it didn't seem 'detailed' enough to be an acceptable work, here are other splatoon plaza posts made from the exact same medium.

Detail and art medium really does not equate to effort made on a piece! The ones by cephalorock incorporate a more advanced level of shading and coloring than the alien drawing, but I still think both are beautiful pieces of work that took a good amount of effort. Mind you this is just with 2 colors and a tiny canvas; the level of details artists can do with the limits is insane.

Anyway, I guess what I'm driving at is that as long as someone made a piece of work with some amount of effort, that is good enough for me. I'm not sure why there is this level of strictness in the first place; if it's to say it's unfair for others who put in effort, I just wanna say that I personally don't mind. I put effort into my own works because I enjoy the process, and I don't really stress much about the effort others put into their own entries. I just think each piece has to be sincere enough no matter the level of art. 😌

Kekeflipnote for anyone who doesn't know! He makes all his animations entirely in Flipnote!
Oh, and this video also came to mind. A youtuber named elliotisacoolguy made this to prove that you can make decent or even good graphic design without having to give your entire lifes' savings to Adobe. I'm not saying every example should be allowed (like minecraft) but I think it's relevant and worth a watch... it should be about the end result, not the program (AI generated imagery programs excluded, obviously).
Anyway!! I will stop chiming in now.

Your art is always so gorgeous! As someone who does everything "art" (well, i try, lol) on just my phone for all of these events, and not an artist at all, it's nice to see people understand and appreciate that we all have different limitations, tech, programs, etc. 💕

Puzzles? Heck yes, can do.
Art? Hours of struggling on my phone for very simple creations. 😄

@Chris My drawing app has multiple background options. I need one of the backgrounds to show for my 2d craft.
1739202758826.png
To clarify, I will cover it with my drawings, but I want part of the background to show. Would it count as a pre-made asset? And if I choose to use an image from Google Images or whatever as a background, would the image be considered a pre-made asset?

I know I said I wasn't going to make another submission, but thanks to @/Chere., I learned about Colors! 3D and I downloaded it this morning! I had a lot of fun doing this and purposefully kept it simple to stay true to my original card.

my 2d craft submission (first or second? idk):

This was dedicated to @/himekirako, but everything (the pickup line, doodles, etc.) is my creation : )

How's this speedpaint (time elapsed - 49 min) for "effort?"
