What are you reading?

I'm in the middle of three books at once. Assassin's Quest, last book of the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb, Hero of Ages, the last book of the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, and A Crown of Swords, 8th book in the Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. Mistborn is a reread for me, and I haven't read it in... 10 years? Might as well be new 😬

My girlfriend bought me A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik for my birthday a week and a half ago. I'm about six chapters in so far and enjoying it. It's Novik's take on a magic school - and it's much darker than other authors go with this genre.

started reading the redwall series (yea i read children's books sometimes fight me)

I just started reading The school for good and evil series by Soman Chainani.

I just started The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula Leguin. I was looking up “Portland fiction” and this was what popped up first.

I definitely enjoy it more than the other book of hers that I read. The alternate universe Oregon she created is interesting to learn about and the interactions between the protagonist and his therapist are engaging.

I started reading Dire Dragons from the Untold Secrets of Planet Earth collection. It’s a really nice book that compares dragons in ancient art to modern renderings of dinosaurs, showing the uncanny resemblance in morphology (it can be very precise) while taking into account stylization and simplification in cultural art and the like. It’s really fascinating and eye-opening how wide-spread and recent in history these sightings and encounters were! 😲

Currently rereading the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. I used to be obsessed with the series when I was little. So far it’s still as good as I remember it. Currently on book 2, The Sea of Monsters

I'm reading Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki. I think the book is hated a bit too much by Goodreads reviewers. The book feels cluttered with plot points, sure, but the writing and characters are really strong. I love how weird the book is and how it fuses sci-fi, fantasy, and contemporary fiction to make something unique.

Currently re-reading The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling). I received the newest book, The Ink Black Heart, for my birthday, and I thought I may as well re-read the series. My goal is to finish all 6 before the 7th one, The Running Grave, releases in October. The thing with these books is that the plot often feels way to drawn out, and it's like nothing's happening at all for long periods of time, then suddenly there's a huge piece of evidence or something that makes everything come to life again for like, 2-4 more chapters, then it dwindles down again. Also, there are a whole bunch of sub-plots which I feel are either not necessary at all, or they overtake the main plot. Otherwise, it's an amazing series, would definitely recommend if you love thrillers!

I finally came to accept that I will probably not find a discounted copy anytime soon so I've decided to pick up a copy of Jennette McCurdy's I'm Glad My Mom Died. iCarly is a bit after my time, but I've been interested in reading about McCurdy's experiences behind the scenes after the allegations of abuse from certain key Nickelodeon staff started coming out around 2017 or so.

I'm 100 pages in, and I'm quite enjoying it. The style of writing is light and breezy, so it's easy to pick up and stop at your leisure. Which strangely compliments the unpleasantness of its subjectmatter. It's emotionally very heavy, but also laced with such sarcasm and bite that it's hard not to be charmed.

The only thing I will criticize is the copious amounts of caps lock when characters yell or speak with firm emotion. It's just a bit of a pet peeve of mine, and looks quite amateur. But other than that, I heartily recommend.

I listened to the audiobook version so I never realized this!

I'd be interested in hearing the audiobook for a subsequent read, given her mother's... interesting use of the English language in various points throughout the book, though I've heard mixed opinions on McCurdy's narration.

At least in this thread I think everyone like her narration! Maybe some people thought it was a bit deadpan at times, but I enjoyed the different voices she gave. It added a lot of characterization, especially to her mom

I finished I'm Glad My Mom Died about a week or so ago. Very good book, much recommend if you can stomach the subject matter. It certainly didn't feel like 300 pages long, so I managed to read the whole thing cover-to-cover in about three days, and I imagine that time would have probably been cut in half if I didn't have family visiting at the time of reading it.

And having finally found a physical copy reasonably discounted, I'm moving onto The Dutch House by Ann Patchett. This has been on my bucket list for awhile as well, so I'm pretty excited to finally get around to it. Also, the audio book is narrated by Tom Hanks, and how could anyone possibly resist the allure of a dramatic tale of poverty and loss recounted in luscious detail by Woody from Toy Story? Of course, I'm not listening to the audiobook right now, but maybe someday.

Do webcomics count as readable media? If so, I've started to get into Homestuck as of late. To be honest, I only started reading it because a user on another forum was a Homestuck fan and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I'm enjoying it so far.

Currently reading the ACOTAR series. I'm halfway into the third book and MY GOD I have never been so enthralled with a series as much as this one. I just love the characters so much ;w;

I use Audible at work and my coworker got me into a couple of book series. Halo, Star Wars (I am now a huge Thrawn fan) and fixing to start the overlord series.

As far a physical books I am reading Red, White and Royal Blue. I saw the trailer for the movie so I grabbed the book from the store.

Currently reading the Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordian. I’m halfway through book 2 right now. So far I’m liking it as a sequel series to PJ, but I’m a little worried about the “most OP characters lost their memory” thing they’ve been doing.

I'm currently on chapter 10 of book 8 of The Wheel of Time series now, The Path of Daggers, and am really enjoying it.
