What’s your current opinion on this site?

It might be nice to have two different categories. One for more experienced artist’s and one for beginner/ amateur. I know I will never get a staff favorite on art just because mine will never be as good as all the amazing artist here and that’s not their fault. It would just be nice to have a chance.
If they do separate art events I suggest that 1) users determine themselves which category they should enter and 2) if those of us who would be considered advanced just want participation points because we don't have time and/or energy can still be allowed to enter at the advanced level with low effort entries, otherwise it runs the risk of skewing the amateur level.

For the most part the forums are very nice with a lot of friendly and helpful members. I would've never been able to finish my NL town without the help of so many during the end of the NL era.

But...it's also a mixed bag as is anything in life. The divide when New Horizon came out between the toxic positivity and those not on board with how the game was handled was something else. Collectibles were something I never really got until way later like 2022 or later. Some people take them waaaaaaay too seriously. Actually I think the some is more like a lot.

The 2023 Christmas event really showcased how ridiculous some of you acted. I won't go into detail cause if you know about it you know about it. But still, all that over some tiny pixel that has no monetary value and is only accessible on one forum. Or how cutthroat some of you acted during team events. And it's like for what reason?

I find the events a lot of fun. I didn't join them until 2021 TBTWC and Camp 2021. I probably wouldn't still be here if it weren't for the events and how friendly some of the members are on here. New Horizon was handled very poorly imo and I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. Say what you will about how the events are handled, but there's not a lot of places online that do this kind of thing and keep their community as active as they can. They're fun and I'm sure there's a lot of planning to keep them going for as long as they have been.

They have their flaws for sure. I've came in dead last with all of the team events I've done. I don't know how they could possibly balance team events. It's a huge time sink and commitment to spend 3 weeks of your life on some event. Some people aren't willing to do that and I can understand, but that causes teams to suffer and lose momentum when they lose teammates. I like team events, but I also don't know if I'm willing to take another plunge to do another team event and possibly come in last again. It's a lot to commit to, put so much effort into, and not have anything to really show for it. Team events need an overhaul imo. Like I don't know...maybe don't make them 3 weeks long??? Just a thought.

A lot of the events are also heavily focused on the arts. I love arts and I think all of that creating is fun, but this is also an Animal Crossing forum. Not an art forum. While a large group of members might be artists, it kind of alienates a lot of the other members. When I first started doing the events, there were so many members doing them and over time we lost a lot of those and I remember reading their comments as to why. They all voiced how the events highly favored artists so why bother trying when they know they're not going to get anything out of it.

I remember browsing some of the older events. Just to see what they were like. The entries back then that won would've never been considered by the current staff for nomination. I think that's pretty telling. Calling someone's work low effort when you don't personally know them or their skill level is not something we should enforce.

I always thought the events needed to stop being so heavily focused on 2D art. Either that or there need to be 3 seperate categories. Begginer, intermediate, professional. Not knocking anyone for being good at what they're great at, but it's all the same members doing the events anymore and it's probably difficult to keep the interest of the ones that left for reasons why I've mentioned above and new members are probalby intimidated by how unwelcoming it feels from an outside level. I mean hell I still don't feel like I belong here lol.

I’m not sure if they will ever do separate categories. Users should be able to decide which one to enter. I think more people might try if they can decide for themselves which category they are in. Yea you should still be allowed to enter the advanced if you want.

For Animal Crossing related stuff it's great! I also think it's great for certain off-topic conversations. That being said, I've definitely experienced many issues with official events and collectibles.

@/seliph already mentioned this but I just wanted to echo that I've also taken issue with rules being enforced inconsistently on multiple occasions. I've witnessed several instances where I've been sort of baffled that action wasn't taken, while there's also been situations where I was shocked that action was even taken in the first place. I've genuinely questioned staff's priorities over letting certain things slide while also seeing people who were punished too harshly and/or didn't need to be punished at all. The recent case with the Valentine's Day Party event really left a sour taste in my mouth, and it's a shame that it hasn't been formally addressed yet. The rules aren't always clear, and it's kind of unfair to push certain rules in our face, then act like it should have been obvious when it wasn't.

As for collectibles, the market really is a mess. Though, I will say that I noticed a significant change with the Easter egg collectibles after last year's egg hunt. A lot of people were able to get the eggs they've wanted and there's not a huge demand for a lot of the top tier eggs like there used to be. I was kind of hoping this kind of change would follow with the 2024 Fair, and while it seemed to help with some of the cheaper collectibles, there doesn't feel like there was any change for the collectibles that were 156 throwback tickets and above (which were mainly the glow wands). Knowing that their prices were based off of the demand/popularity they received from the community also rubs me the wrong way. Like, seeing the Celeste Plush cost 156 tbt tickets and the White Star Fragment cost 48 tb tickets when they were both the same cost in the 2020 Fair really just felt like this decision was made based on Celeste's popularity.

I can understand wanting certain collectibles to be more rare, but I think a line needs to be drawn. It doesn't feel that great when the market has gotten so bad that you need to severely overpay to get something like a single glow wand, and even then, you can sit on your offer forever with no one biting. I'm still not sure if I would have ever been able to get my first star wand if not for the help of a friend, because we had to pay like 40k+ value which is ridiculous, but it was the reality of the market at the time. This kind of bleeds into the sentiment that others have voiced— how you need to make connections/have friends to get rarer collectibles. I won't sugarcoat it because it's 100% true— I wouldn't have been able to make as much progress with my collectible wishlist as I have if not for the help of my friends. I think it's great for friends to help each other out, but I don't think collectible scarcity should be bad enough to the point where someone without friends or connections on the forum has a disadvantage of buying a higher tier collectible.

Anyways, there's definitely been a few instances where I've thought about quitting if I'm being entirely honest, though I've made so many good memories and met a lot of my closest friends on here. I can't see myself leaving permanently, and I still enjoy the events that staff put together. I just feel like there are things that should be improved to make it more enjoyable for everyone.

I’m gonna be real and say the “effort” thing was something that I simply wasn’t witness to and hearing what I have about it here it makes me glad I wasn’t really following the last event. Even if I managed to place well after things like that I wouldn’t have been happy being part of that event, December 2023 was also very not good and I wouldn’t have liked being part of it but hey. I’m sure there were other events while I was on the site with the same issue and I’m honestly glad I didn’t let myself get too emotionally invested, I’ve done this song and dance, I would have felt hurt.

It’s really weird when I’ve felt more relieved that I don’t really bother with the art events anymore, a lot of it is having a perfectionist mindset but it sucks because I learned a ton about art in 2023 and really enjoyed camp that year. December 2023 turned me more away for a while and I never picked myself up.

Honestly the most relaxing/cathartic event things for me were always the ones where you would decorate rooms ingame, but hell will freeze over before I buy any new consoles and I forget if this site is even doing those anymore, so rip I’m not playing the next AC. I don’t even remember the last time I played before last week when I finally fully hit my character with the T. God I wish I could change his name.

If the collectable discord really is some alt hangout I should really go there some time lol but I’ve kind of just become a shut-in altogether. The people here who actually have my Discord can attest I don’t even talk much there anymore. For whatever site did wrong it was there when I needed it a couple years ago though. If anyone I recognise ever wants to reach out I’m always open but tbh it’s just kind of sad for me to look back on how much I’ve been struggling, again though I needed this place for 2023 and I guess I’m glad I can remember it for those good times. I’ve done the song and dance with cliques and drama and so on WAY before this site

I agree with this. I say, we need a glow festival for this site, where all returning glow wands, as well as new glow wands, will be purchasable. I may have my flower glow wand, but they are still among the least common glow wands that are not imposter wands.

I want to add that I’m concerned about the zero tolerance for threats but unless it is directly on the site, nothing can be done even if a direct screenshot is provided. I don’t understand why that isn’t an instant ban. Why does it matter if happened on the site or not?

Overall I really like the community here. I have made so many amazing friends . I got back into drawing thanks to the events and I think I may have gotten a bit better because of them. I really enjoy drawing again.

I almost didn’t participate in the art portion this time just because of the effort situation. My drawings are not always very good but I try very hard on them. I did have fun with them just wasn’t sure they would be accepted.

I agree with you here 100%. I’ve suggested that before as well. I’m in the same boat; I’m trying my best to improve when I can but it’ll probably take me years to win if ever considering how long it took some of my friends to get nominations. I’m just participating for the experience and because it still is fun, but for a long time I was avoiding it because of the same reason as you.

my experience is positive however, to be fair, i haven't really ever been that involved on here. i haven't done collectibles at all, never really interested me, and i hadn't really joined in any events until this valentine's. i mainly stay on the ac side. and i don't really have friends but an overwhelming majority of my interactions with other users has been very positive and great, except maybe 3? in my decade on this site. i'm very sorry to hear about some of the issues other people have experienced though. hopefullythey can be addressed. i'm thankful that there's moderation and it's a safe space for LBTQ+ people, POC and other marginalized people. all the social media sites, FB, twt, ig, yt, etc. have become cesspools of extreme bigotry and bots yet nothing happens when you report hateful comments but they'll ban you for liking posts too fast because they think YOU'RE a bot or shadow ban you for speaking up about genocide.... i'm also thankful they kept this forum running, of all the forums i used to visit, this is the last one standing and i'm worried if they'll be able to keep it up in the future :(

Yes it definitely takes me a long time to improve. I had to get in the mind set that I know I won’t get a favorite. So I try to focus on having fun with it and learn new ways to draw. This way I am not disappointed.

i have browsed this site every day for nearly 6 years, my opinion of this site is very positive.

i’m more active on the brewsters cafe section now. i used to be super active on the new leaf and new horizons trading sections but i most likely will not be active in the trading community until another animal crossing is released. i definitely miss that aspect but that’s not tbt’s fault, it’s mainly because i’m disinterested in new horizons and new leaf online is gone/i basically have every item catalogued.

Rereading this thread, my initial response was lackluster, but I agree with majority of the sentiments! First off with the enforced rules— they’re wishy-washy sometimes, and I rarely ever get responses to the reports I’ve given. For example, I reported someone last year for what I believe is a major offense, and I have gotten… no response. At all. It’s largely disheartening to know that staff would let this slide when I feel under normal circumstances the person should have been reprimanded. And if staff did do something, how would I have known without acknowledgement?

It’s also kind of funny that this thread exists and so many people are voicing their opinions because we don’t really have other means of doing so. We have CTS, sure, but again I have issues with there being no responses to some complaints.

I'm also seeing an uptick in disrespect for art/artists recently, one being the use of AI images. I really wish there was more of a push from staff to educate users on genAI and its unethicality, as well as an effort to keep AI images off the site completely
I 100% agree, seeing AI art on this site just irks me. Out of all the pictures on the internet you could use as a pfp/sig/reaction picture, why use AI-generated images? More people need to be aware of what is and isn’t AI, and I would love if the staff also properly moderated these images on site. There doesn’t need to be any warning even if it’s an honest mistake, just a general “hey so we don’t allow AI use on this site.” I find it odd to because I remember the writing event back then where they screened entries for AI use, why not deliver this same amount of effort outside events as well?

Like, seeing the Celeste Plush cost 156 tbt tickets and the White Star Fragment cost 48 tb tickets when they were both the same cost in the 2020 Fair really just felt like this decision was made based on Celeste's popularity.
Right, this was kinda odd to me too since I thought restocking collectibles was not based on the community demand/supply? I dunno, the whole artificial scarcity thing bothers me. I just like seeing people come up with creative lineups and stuff.

It would be hypocritical for me to say I wasn’t collectible-crazed once, I’ve said and done things I’m not proud of at all, and I feel extremely embarrassed by it. But now I’ve realized these mistakes and mellowed down, and I’m really satisfied with what I have so I’d very much like it if others could obtain their dream collectibles/lineups for whatever reason they have ^^

edit: Also I did just remember the kitty ice cream collectible last halloween event where they limited it to 1 per person…. why make it unique just to lift the restriction after the event? I love it a lot and I wanted a whole line of it, but artificial scarcity strikes again I guess. 😭 Idk what restrictions were placed in 2014’s beach party and 2015’s spellectibles, but checking quick how many of those member-made collectibles were sold, we easily have 500-700 per collectible floating around. Ice cream kitty has, what, 125 sold? I think spellectibles were on a restock basis, but so many of it was restocked over time that we had an abundant amount. Now we’re working with an unlimited supply, but we are still… limited by the amount we can buy (which is. one). I definitely would’ve preferred for this restriction to be lifted completely instead 😔 We’re still limited by the amount of tbt we have anyway.

AI images in people's avatars could easily be taken care of by having purchasable avatars similar to the collectibles.

A small thing that I like about this place is the birthday's being shown on the bottom. The community gets together to go wish anybody who hangs out here regularly a happy birthday on their profile. It's very sweet.

I make an effort to check the birthday's each day although I don't always catch everyone.

I'm just going to state my honest opinion and concerns:

Don't get me wrong. I love tbt, but it's not a perfect website. The site has it's own flaws. So I'm basically jotting down things that needed more work on improving.

I'm basically disappointed at the current state of tbt events in my opinion. There is loads to talk about when it comes to event contests and stuff but I'll be pointing out what needs to be improved since I love this site and I want to see it improve in the future.

  1. The site needs a bit more active staff for events (and needs a bit more professionalism): This is an ongoing issue for me since the lack of staff to keep track of events. The site needed substitute staff so that the other staff can focus more on irl stuff or priorities. Therefore, there needs to be another one to cover the other half of the shift when it comes to handling events. There also needs to be more staff with a sense of professionalism when managing events, especially those who organize events that all ages can join.
  2. Staff favorites should have a category/ event winner selection needs more work in balancing: I've sometimes sensed a clear bias in the staff picks. They've claimed that they gave chances to those who haven't win yet but there are still those who netted consecutive wins in every event. The solution to that problem is present the winners of each category (most effort, most creative, most funny, etc.) Or have categories for skill levels.
  3. Make more engaging Events: tbt neighborly games proves that tbt can make more enaging events for everyone, and I would like to see more events that basically welcomes more users regardless of skill level to participate. (multiplayer, etc.)
  4. Active and inactive collectible inventory needed an easier way of organization: This might be just me, but I can get tired of scrolling down inactive inventory just to get to the second page of the inventory. One fix is to present an equal amount of collectibles shown in each page without making the inactive collectible page longer than active or have a tag system for collectibles in which we can narrow down what collectible we are looking for. But then again, suggesting a "saved lineup presets" is ridiculous and impossible to program on an old web site engine.
  5. It needs more reactions: This might sound silly but can we have a reaction of agreement or 💯?
And now, I'm going to state the pros and cons of this website in general:

Pros:
you can easily trade in game items in Animal Crossing games via this site. Each people you trade with in here is mostly helpful and friendly. The feedback system helps because you can rate your experience trading with othee people here. Another pro is you can customize your own thread and your own posts to include arranged images unlike any other websites that don't have that option. You can also edit posts to fix grammatical errors or typos unlike major websites like Twitter. The community here is tight knit and is friendlier than communities in social media.

Cons: this is a forum, so expect slower notifications and responses when it comea to messaging. Events on tbt can be daunting for new users to participate since these events favor more on the old and familiar users.

Overall, this site can benefit on improvements and I would like to see the website improve in the future because I honestly love this website.
