Just want to address some more recent points that have been made + some recurring points!

On the AI ban, I am still firm on it being entirely possible. There are several communities that have banned the use of AI art entirely - Bulbagarden as someone mentioned, Flight Rising, and Chicken Smoothie are just a few examples. I don't think it should be an actual punishable offense unless 1) it is recurring or 2) it is used to deceive/scam other users, but it can be implemented similarly to the signature height limit - no formal warning, but removing the image(s) and giving the user a notification of the removal. Sure there isn't a ton of AI use here, but it does spike every event, especially when there's a reward for having a themed avatar/signature. If you want an artist-friendly community, there needs to be a firm stance against AI that isn't just limited to event entries.

I do have more to say about political discussion since there's still a belief that everything goes so long as discussion is "unaggressive". The issue with this mindset is it's just unrealistic and unfair to expect people to remain calm when someone is advocating for (or defending) taking away peoples rights, denying their existence, or other forms of oppression, regardless of how unaggressive they may be. I am not interested in hearing people justify why they disrespect me or my friends; it is not a pleasant experience to hear people say "love the sinner but hate the sin", or "I don't really believe trans people but I'll refer to them with the correct pronouns", or "I had a bad experience with a black person so now I'm scared of them", no matter how nice or innocuous it may seem it's still hurtful.

Things like sexuality, gender/gender expression, race, and body autonomy shouldn't be topics of debate to begin with, it's basic humanity. Aside from that, with all due respect chances are we've all heard every so-called argument against all of these topics by now and most of them come down to using religion as a scapegoat and/or pearlclutching over situations that don't actually exist, such as the very false idea that letting trans women into women's restrooms will "enable assault" (shocker - assaults have already been happening in women's restrooms for decades and it's from cisgender men, not trans women) or that abortion clinics are "mutilating babies".

It is very easy for people to advocate for letting everyone share their opinions and expecting everyone to remain calm and "civil" (a word that's basically become a RW dogwhistle which I know many of us have started to roll our eyes at) when they haven't experienced the same discrimination or they're part of privileged classes (cisgender, white, man, straight), so when discussing these topics and how to moderate them please try to put yourselves in the shoes of the most vulnerable people you can think of, who are already active targets of oppression, having to read posts that are against their freedom or mere existence in any form. There isn't a need to completely ban political discussion if there's a firm stance against bigotry of any kind.

Collectibles, collectible scarcity, and the TBT economy
I made a selling thread in January and reduced the prices a fair amount below what I’d seen them selling for previously or elsewhere, and I was able to sell (not all, but) much more than I expected. It makes sense to want to maximise the value of any collectibles sold, but I do think it’s worth considering reducing selling prices if you want to sell collectibles for TBT bells, since there continues to be some demand for them. Sometimes a collectible is worth more to us than selling, because we value it more than the TBT we'd receive for parting with it.

I know artificial scarcity has been mentioned in here. There was demand for re-releases of collectibles, and during 2024 we had re-releases of many collectibles, which has added to the pool of highly desirable collectibles like Star Fragments, Glow Wands, and certain eggs. I hope everyone can get the collectibles they want, though I do think that collectible scarcity (and particularly, having a range of collectibles with different rarities) adds to the collectible nature of them! I think 2024 was a pretty good year for re-releasing collectibles and generating TBT, since there were also a number of bell bonuses that presumably helped to generate TBT currency?
Suggesting that others sell (and buy) at a lower price has been attempted for years and years and sadly it's just not reasonable to expect it of everyone. Overall I've seen people are more lenient on tier 4-8 collectibles, which is great, but it still doesn't get people enough to buy higher tier, more sought out collectibles. People aren't going to be inspired to sell star wands for 5k just because they were asked politely, and frankly I don't expect them to nor can I really blame them.

Aside from that, there's the same handful of collectibles that have been rotting in everyone's selling threads for months or even a year+ so I don't think peoples' pricing is even the issue. It's that the economy sucks and has lead to certain collectibles being worth 10k and over. Artificial scarcity is fine to an extent but TBT has long surpassed that.

Rule enforcement
I saw there’s some concern about the consistency of rules being enforced. I think ultimately there are times when rules are very straightforward, and other times when instances are more nuanced. I don't have any experience with it, but I assume each instance has to be addressed on a case-by-case basis, and so it’s bound to look inconsistent at times. I’m sure at times when certain things are reported or incidents happen, the community doesn't necessarily get all of the information, in fairness to everyone involved. I’m not a perfect human, and I wouldn’t want to expect anyone else to be, regardless of whether they're a regular member or a staff member.
Of course everything is addressed on a case-by-case basis, however, rules still need to be enforced equally across the board.
Since you have no personal experience with it I'll use my own recent experience an example. Months ago during the mushroom event I got a warning for posting "I promise you guys you can find event-themed profile pictures without resorting to AI art" in What's Bothering You and despite thinking it was vague and encompassing enough since I saw several AI avatars, I got a warning for "posting about other members" because "Posting about other users [in What's Bothering You?], whether directly by name or indirectly, can result in hurt feelings" (quoted directly from the warning) and my post was deleted. Meanwhile I've reported other posts that were more clearly about individual or very specific members and no action was taken. There is someone who has repeatedly vagueposted about a server I'm a part of for years. Several users vent about their partners or exes who are members of the forum and it's fine. So where is the line drawn? There needs to be clarity and consistency.

Another instance of note was the 2023 Christmas fiasco. I hate to bring it up again but it's relevant here: one user had their entry removed from a favourites poll and everyone noticed, but others who broke the same rule wer dealt with quietly with their entries still left up to avoid people taking notice and targeting them. This was probably the most blatant instance of inconsistent rule enforcing I can think of, and despite several users pointing out the unfairness, staff defended their actions. Which brings me to another staffing issue that I've been hesitant to bring up but I will go further into in the next point - accountability.

Events
I’ll be honest that I don’t agree with asking to limit which staff should be able to host or judge art-based event tasks, as I think may have been suggested. I don’t think it’s feasible nor necessary. Regardless, just looking quickly, I’ll mention that I know at least eight of the staff are artists, so around half.

These events are all created for fun and to generate interactivity in the community, the prizes are virtual, and the events should hopefully not be taken too seriously! While not everyone has advanced knowledge of art, most of us can appreciate art, drawings, and craft for what we see of them. Sometimes event entries go to community polls, and they are voted on by both people who are very experienced and others who are very inexperienced with art, too.

If we don't want delegating certain staff to certain events, just loosen the "effort" requirements altogether. So long as someone did better than drawing a single square or something it should just be accepted for participation. A pickle with toothpicks in it won third place in an event years ago, keep that energy.

That being said, if someone suggested limiting which staff could host art events months ago I might have gone "I'm not necessarily against it, but why?", but after the whole effort debacle that started here and goes on for pages, I do think it's still worth considering. Sorry to sound like a broken record and sorry to now link it directly but after almost a month there still hasn't been any accountability, address, or apology for this, despite insulting several TBT members including all of the prominent artists on this forum. After a direct link like this is when I'd expect a staff member to jump in to say "Please take up issues with staffing in the Contact The Staff board", but as time has shown, having all issues with staff funneled into CTS rather than being able to have a public discussion only serves to further avoid change and accountability.

As someone who has been in the CTS board countless times, especially in the past: it genuinely feels like a pointless endeavour. You can try to be as informative and careful with your posts as you possibly can, but chances are the ultimatum you'll receive is "Here's why our actions were actually 100% correct. Also we will not be apologizing to anyone who felt hurt". Sometimes there's a "Looking back this might not have been the best action to take, but now it's too late because we already did it". There's just an overall refusal to go back on any decision or apologize to anybody, even if it would make the most sense or be beneficial for everyone involved. I really don't understand it, and aside from the right-wing enabling this is probably the biggest issue with TBT imo.

I've kinda calmed down and thought about things so I will edit and shorten my initial post, but my main comments still stand: I agree we need more accountability from staff & rules enforced with more consistency to prevent more members from getting hurt or otherwise punished with inconsistency. Sometimes I'm just... confused with certain choices by the staff, and I used to be afraid speaking out about certain things because I don't really know where each line is drawn. I understand the line can be blurred a lot of times, but the way it's just been too inconsistent should be changed.

Many times it's better to change a decision or at least acknowledge things could've been handled better. Going forward I think a lot of improvements should be made, and can only happen if this site is open to criticism.

long text// word vomit incoming

this is the first and last time i’m going to touch on this topic but i'll just say that becoming the poster child for the whole "2023 christmas fiasco" has seriously put an incredibly strong damper on my enjoyment on this site. i’ve fully accepted that what happened to me was entirely my fault and have processed and moved on from the punishment that followed after everything. i have taken a lot of time to reflect on choices i made and how things could have been different had i not gotten so ahead of myself. what i didn’t appreciate is a whole slew of behaviours that were listed out and felt were punishable were posted while the only available context for anyone passing by was that i was behind everything. you can say “these actions were done by many/separate people” but when you give an entire forum base a witch to hunt, they’ll do so. i’ve seen the messages, i’ve seen the indirect posts about me, different chats, people talking about me and certian users saying vile things about me, acting holier than thou, but to each their own and things are handled in certain ways i guess.

allowing some users to be protected by anonymity while not considering that maybe having one sole person be put to blame for everything to me didn’t feel like the best move but that’s just me and my perception. my understanding is that they didn’t want to have to remake the polls again and maybe protected people that way, but at what expense? what cost? me being put to blame for everything? i understand the importance of anonymity, i just never understood why that couldn't be extended to everyone, when it's very obvious what would have happen when you give the forum a single person to blame. maybe staff felt i deserved a harsher punishment for doing the same things that were being done by others, but it’s not really my place to speculate. i’ve tried to move on, tried showing up to things even though the anxiety, depression/sad feelings and fear of being hated still gnaws at me all the time. i’ve tried to have fun trying to make event entries that speak to me and are from the heart, but the pain from all this still carries on with me, even now. it’s not in my power to get anyone to stop bringing this situation up and i honestly didn’t even want to exert the energy to even post this because it really does feel like nothing matters anymore. writing this took a lot out of me and even now i'm still on the fence writing this because i genuinely don't see the benefit of even trying to stand up for myself. but seeing this be brought up again and again and again when everyone thinks it was me bribing or insidiously trying to take down someone else’s entry when i didn’t have anything to do with all that, has really taken a toll on me. i’m constantly questioning my participation in things around here cause i feel so incredibly hated by everyone, always doubting myself and feeling like friends and people i genuinely love despise me for a mistake i made.

i’d also ask that if this is something that created all these issues, for this long, that at the very least please amend the rules page and add it there. because it’s still not up there and that little small event reminder banner that runs alongside polls wasn’t there to save me from all this way back then when i checked.

i’m not looking for responses, quotes, @s or anything of the sort so please feel free to carry on

Just giving a quick update-sort-of: we are trying to put together a larger response to various issues that were raised in this thread! But we're trying to get the feedback/opinions of as many staff as possible* (and then we'll need to come to some conclusions, turn all of that into something actually readable, etc.), so this may take a while. We are definitely still keeping an eye on things and discussing (and we know there are a lot of problems to be addressed, some that are harder to come to a consensus on -- which is why this is taking us so long!)
(* I personally was only able to actually give my own feedback last night since I've been busy. orz)

Apologies if this isn't really the update you wanted just yet, but I didn't really want to leave this thread without a staff response for too long. Thank you all for your patience and feedback, and sorry for the delay!

I'm writing this at 4AM because I can't sleep because of pain, hopefully I don't make grammar errors here. Sorry about that!
I know the discussion in this thread has kind of died down and people have more or less already touched on everything but I wanted to come back to this thread and say a little something that has been on my mind.

I'm bringing this up because several other people were discussing their concerns about the bigotry on the site specifically racism, homophobia and transphobia. I'm aware there's quite a lot of forms of discrimination and bigotry and trying to list them all out is quite a mouthful and I do not believe that just because I haven't seen anyone bring up ableism alongside the racism, homophobia and transphobia they speak of that that means they are trying to ignore it or anything and I am not trying to compare forms of bigotry on a scale of how often I see them or how offensive each one is, that's not what I'm trying to do.

Currently these are the current rules regarding discrimination, the rules mention do not be racist, do not be homophobic/biphobic/acephobic and do not discriminate against religious groups such as being Islamophobic and anti-Semitic for example.
The rules do not explicitly mention other types of discrimination but I just thought it was implied we shouldn't be sexist, ableist etcetera. on the site either

I hope that if TBT wants to work on addressing the racism, homophobia and transphobia others have brought to concern and help make TBT a safe place for BIPOC and LGBTQA+ members then the staff also wants to make TBT a safe place for Neurodivergent people, I know at least one staff member is Neurodivergent so I would hope they would want to create a safe environment for other people just like them.

Currently the only ableism I've ever encountered on the site was someone making (in my personal opinion anyways..) a really rude comment regarding ADHD and the people who live with it, they seem to have a very misinformed and negatively stereotyped view of what ADHD is. This comment made me feel deeply uncomfortable, I am not professionally diagnosed with ADHD(though I suspect I could be suffering from it) But what I do have is Autism which has some similarities and overlaps with ADHD, the fact that this person seems to have a negative and uneducated view of ADHD made me feel like this person probably feels similar regarding Autism and that this forum isn't a safe place for Autistic, ADHD and other Neurodivergent people like me to openly be Autistic without feeling scared of how people will treat me because I'm Autistic.
This exact same person who made this comment about ADHD has also made other offensive and uncomfortable comments on the forums such as mocking the usage of pronouns and how they are important for everyone both cis and trans alike, celebrating how hormones for transgender individuals have been banned from where they live and claiming transgender healthcare is harmful and making comments about how they think Pro-Palestine protests are obnoxious and how they wish they would stop already and not caring about why people are doing these protests in the first place!
All of these comments from this person make me sick to my stomach and they are the reason I became inactive on the forums for numerous months, maybe like a year even? And it makes me even angrier the staff took so long to deal with this user and ban them, I seriously can't comprehend why the staff ever allows people like that to remain on the forums when they have continuously expressed hurtful beliefs on the forums, I seriously can't comprehend why the staff would ever allow second(or more) chances to someone who has made it abundantly clear they are a bigot and they don't care that their beliefs are hurtful and offensive to others.

I seriously don't understand how the staff literally said "human rights are not politics and none of the staff believes they are" and then this person tries to justify their bigotry by claiming "I'm just trying to share different views and opinions on these subjects and how other people feel differently about these topics" "It's just a different view that some people feel differently about the LGBTQA+ community and these gender ideologies 😇." And the staff allows people trying to speak out against human rights and share why they don't like them instead of immediately banning bigots and trying to keep this place a safe place for marginalized groups of minority and make sure trans people don't need to hear bigots celebrating our healthcare services being taken away, make sure Palestine people don't need to hear people not caring about the genocide and the ethnic cleansing going on, make sure ADHD people don't need to hear "ADHD people are super hyper and they should go to a hospital to fix that"

If the staff wants to delete my post speaking up about how angry I am this was ever allowed to happen and award me a warning or worse a ban for talking about other users(a bigot) and their bigotry and their ban then that's fine with me. I am extremely angry with how the staff handled this situation and how it took so long to address this user and they were allowed to run wild making hurtful and offensive posts for over a week or so before seemingly being banned. It made me leave the forums for a long long time because of the staff's moderation actions and guess what! Several of these problematic posts and are still up and kicking and weren't deleted! If the staff wants to delete my post but keep up these other posts that really says a lot about the staff! I refuse to remain silent about what has happened, I don't care if I get in trouble for speaking out that bigotry is wrong and disgusting and I'm sickened that bigots were allowed to preach hate on a fun Animal Crossing website

One last thing, I have been in several discord servers which claim they do not tolerate bigotry and you will be banned if you say racist, sexist, transphobic and homophobic things but apparently bigotry doesn't apply to ableism and people are free to call others the ablest R-slur and claim it's a funny joke and yell at me I'm being oversensitive for being called the R-slur. I'm glad I've never seen anyone on TBT use the R-slur thus far and I sincerely hope TBT does not transform into the same environment as these discord servers where they claim racism, sexism and LGBTphobia are banned but ableism is okay apparently. I sincerely hope TBT strives to be a safe place for Neurodivergent people like me.

Thank you so much for reading my multi-paragraph essay of my thoughts on the manner, sorry for any grammar errors or if anything I said doesn't make sense.

I'm popping in for another quick update. We are working hard on our responses to make sure they include as many of the broached topics as possible. Of course, we don't expect this to be one and done. We plan to continue the discussion over time as we work to improve TBT for all of us.

@-Mars- After reading your most recent post, I want to reassure you that we will not be taking any action against you or deleting your post. We appreciate the feedback, and we absolutely view ableism as another form of discrimination that is against the rules here.

With that said, we are not aware of the problematic posts that still remain on the forum. We thought we did a thorough clean up, but we are human so mistakes happen. We'd be happy to review and remove these posts if you could point us in the right direction by reporting them.

Hey all, we're going to move the discussion over to an official feedback thread, as @SkyKnight03 suggested here. This is also where we'll post our responses to a lot (if not all) of the feedback posted in this thread, but it will take some time to get to each topic. Expect the new thread within the next few minutes. Thanks!
