Do you have a gender preference?

Definitely don’t have a preference due to gender but atm I have 7 girls and 3 boys. Just the way it worked out. It was 50/50 before the Sanrio cards came out and I really wanted Etoille. Then I got Judy from the amazing kind @Moritz so had to choose Stitches to move out as I had the amibo. I get attached to personalities and I hate to let anyone go. At the beginning I was desperate for my dreamies and although Roscoe was never a favourite before it was so hard to let him go as he was one of my first villagers and really grew on me

Design wise I wouldn't say I have a preference, there's lots of male and female villagers with nice designs. But for personality I would say I prefer the male villagers. I guess I just don't like some of the gender stereotyping that comes with the girl's dialogue. Not to say that the guys dialogue isn't stereotyped as well but I guess it just doesn't both me as much since I'm a ~girl~ so I guess I already feel like I have to deal with female stereotypes in real life? I may be slightly overthinking this lol

I try to always keep my island balanced at 5 males and 5 females though because as you said variety is important.

I really like male villagers the most, I do like a few of the female? But mainly male, Cranky, and Smug are my favorites

I really cant have an island without either. I try my best to have female villagers, but I usually take them back to male villagers, I like their personalities better also designs

I find the males have more unique designs then the females. More character? The only female personality I like is Snooty, which is probably because Snooty is susposed to be like Cranky, and cranky is one of my favorites,

Smug is my second favorite, but I'm not crazy about the female equivalent Peppy. Name says it all. I'd rather have a flirty Smug, then a perky one.

Just my opinions, male is better, but that's just me.

I don't think I do—I like a lot of both male and female villager designs and try to have a variety of personalities, so my gender ratios are typically fairly even. Thinking about villagers I like/want, but don't have room for, I think it's pretty split down the middle too (Celia, Kyle, Nate, Lolly, Billy, Daisy, Goldie, Murphy, Vesta, Chief...). When it comes to my preferred personality types, it's also mixed—cranky and normal villagers are my favorites to interact with, and I like a lot of both their designs as well.
I do think it'd be cool if personalities weren't gender-locked in the future, too, though.

I happen to have a lot of favourite personalities that are locked to male villagers, but I need every single personality on my island. My favourite male personalities are lazy, crankies, and jocks. But design wise, I like a lot of the snooty and peppy villagers.

They’re clothes are always very gender neutral which threw me completely when my islanders called used the she/her pronouns. Yuka looks amazing in a towel when wandering around my island without a care in the world and I’m here for it.

I much prefer female villagers, I just like their design and houses better. Sherb and Marshal are my only two males.

8/10 of my villagers are female but I do like plenty of male characters too. They just don't match the pastel aesthetic the rest of my villagers have going

I mean, in general I gravitate towards female characters, but that seems to be mostly when I'm writing or picking characters to play as. But ACNH is different, and I prefer to have equal numbers of male/female villagers. By "prefer" I mean I almost always replace females with females and males with males. If I find a villager on an island I NEED that's the wrong gender, I'll IMMEDIATELY move out someone else to get the numbers even. I am super particular about that, lol.

I find I'm more attracted to the female designs. On my island, the only male villager I have is Marshall loll. I just happen to like a lot of female villager's designs more than most of the males.

I try to keep it even and have 1 of each personality but my island usually has 1 or 2 more female villagers. There's just a lot of great female rabbits.

I like a ton of female villagers look wise, but most are "normal" which is boring in this game. Personality wise, definitely males.

In oast games though, it would be more females.

I don't have a preference, but I tend to have more female villagers in town or island. Currently in my island, I have 6 ladies and 4 guys.

I find the male villager designs much more appealing than the female villagers. Personally, I really like most of the designs for cranky, smug and lazy villagers. Jock villagers are ok, but there's only a handful of their designs that I really like.

Currently I have 7 male characters and 3 female characters.

Design wise, I don’t think I have a preference. I like a lot of villagers of both genders. However, when it comes to gifts, I like the gifts in the mail from the mail villagers the best since they give me artwork and the female villagers just give me clothes and accessories.

I think I may like the male personalities more. I don’t really like uchis that much—at least not yet since I barely bonded with the few that I had (I don’t remember how they were in NL); I used to love peppy villagers but the dialogue doesn’t click with me even with villagers that were my favorites in NL like Puddles (though I feel like I have gotten use to this new dialogue with Rosie and Merry at least). Normals I like - since their anxiety and thought process I can relate to a lot. snooty i’m fine with but not as snooty as they were in NL; not sure if I like that or not since I used to hate them in NL lol. Crankies on the other hand aren’t cranky enough; also I hate their singing voice. Lazies - I don’t like their bug talk.

I agree, the villagers that send stuff through the mail do tend to give better mail gifts than those who don't send through the mail

I don't have any gender preference with the villagers, whether it's with their personality or their design. I just like who I like for villagers regardless of gender, lol. I do prefer having gender equality on my island as well, so currently I have a 5/5 male/female split on my island (though I've had 6/4 and 4/6 at times, which is okay as well).

As a cis male who plays their character as a self insert... I Envy females.
They have so many nice dresses! I love the lolita dresses they have! And I know I could wear them too but... cis gendered. I want a suit version of it
