What the heck is bubble tea without the tea though? I thought about it just now and all I can think of is a cup of black pearls mashed together. xD

DW man i gotchu let me pull it up:

Bubble tea can be classified into multiple types: most popular ones are milk tea, smoothie, slush, and juice. "Technically" speaking, when ordering bubble tea, you don't ask for "bubble tea" specifically.
E.g. Strawberry milk tea, Honeydew smoothie, Mango slush, Peach juice.
You can get it with fruit flavours (fresh or artificial), and tea flavours (e.g. jasmine green tea, assam black tea, oolong tea)

So that's the basic drink itself. From there, you can add TOPPINGS! Which is what everyone thinks the 'bubble' part is in bubble tea! (But to be honest, bubbles in bubble tea is just the froth at the top of the drink from making it...)

Don't order [insert drink] with bubbles. You'll get corrected. The appropriate topping name for the tapioca balls are "pearls". You can also get all sorts of toppings like red bean, coconut jelly, mango jelly. lychee jelly, (a lot of fruit jellies...), grass jelly, aloe vera or even pudding.

ALL IN ALL bubble tea doesn't have a specific taste, it's like a smoothie bar or even Starbucks in the way that there are a billion customization options (including amount of ice and sugar!).

looks up what in gods name bubble tea is

How can you even remotely call that tea?

It was traditionally made with milk tea (black tea leaves) - and most authentic bubble tea (not ones made with artificial powder flavouring) use tea leaves in addition to the flavouring syrup or fruit.
Now with all the new variations, there are many slushes and juices that don't have tea in it, but there are also many that are real teas (especially from 'authentic' chains such as Chatime, Gongcha, or Sharetea). Example menu here

Thanks for the info. Tho personally I wouldn't call something tea even if it's made with tea leaves if it involves adding idk how many syrup and fruit jellies.

I kind of want to try it but I have no idea where I could buy it where I live.

Yes I do! I love bubble tea!

I remember having a strawberry kiwi flavoured bubble tea at my cousin's and it was delicious! It's a pity that there aren't any bubble tea shops in my city. :C

The original pearl milk tea was just tea+milk+tapioca and much less sweet than people have made it now (it's not really sweet if you get it at the shop that invented it). Bubble Tea has now just become a general term that encompasses all of these new kinds of drinks that branched from it.

(E.g. think calling chicken balls and ginger beef Chinese Food. It's technically American/Canadian food, but it's still placed under the term Chinese food even though there is no Chinese origin)
(or even frappucinos which originally had coffee in them and now they're cups of sugar)

That makes sense. Maybe I'll try it if I see it in one of the fresh takeaway stores. Got pretty curious to it now

I never had it before and I have only seen it in like tomodachi life :(
