I hate how U.S. TV shows and movies are so fixated on specific places. Whenever I see yet another sitcom set in L.A. or New York City I groan. I know that many writers are based in those cities, but it gets boring after a while. How about a drama set in Minnesota or a comedy in Belize? I could name dozens of settings that are scarcely used in western entertainment.
I have the same gripe with anime and manga. Nearly everything is either in Tokyo or Kyoto. I’d love to see more series set in Kyushu, Hokkaido, and especially Sado.
