pet peeves / lil stuff you cant stand

Unions are important and do so much more than what you've said but whatever.

This was actually targeted at my dad who was watching ~rebel news~ this evening and was trying to engage in a conversation with me about it. When I tried to point out that what he was watching was wrong he got upset and defensive as he often does regarding these topics.

That whole ~news~ channel is such an echo chamber of incorrect things and any push back is met with such vitriol it makes my stomach sick.
I suppose that’s my loss then because I cannot get behind the seniority nonsense and those who deserve it not being paid adequately or treated like less because they are new.

I’ll just end it here as my views are just causing a rift here. I’d apologize for the first response but I feel it’s moot point now.

I didn't have the willpower to reply to this at 3 am but I couldn't just let this sit. Unions are so important and to base your whole opinion on them off of your interaction with a few unionized employees is baffling.

Being a new employee often comes with a lower wage. It would be in bad taste to higher someone new (who needs to be trained, needs to work up to fulfilling certain responsibilities, etc) and pay them the same or more than employees that have been with a company for a while. That's not unique to unions, that's just how hiring is. Typically after a three month probation jobs assess how you've been and then discuss a wage increase.

There's a reason why big companies (think Starbucks) invest time and effort into union  busting. They wouldn't do that if unions weren't a threat to them and therefore a benefit to their employees. That's what unions are for - the employees.

At your current job - do you have a competitive wage? A Healthcare plan? Paid time off? Those are all things that unions have helped us (the workers) obtain and many non unionized jobs offer them now to compete with unionized jobs.

🙋🏻‍♀️ My partner is a union lead and deals with this viewpoint daily.

Most workplaces, regardless of whether they have a union, have progression rates in their contract - the longer someone's worked for their company, the more pay and more hours they'll get. It's a reward for dedication and not a union-specific thing.

A lot of unionized workplaces actually pay employees the same regardless of the length of their service, unless there is a progression rate in their contract, then they'll fight for your right to what's stated in the contract. Otherwise seniority just gives you job preference and protection from layoffs.

Without unions we would not have breaks, weekends, a minimum wage, maternity leave, FMLA, paid sick leave/vacation, child labour laws, heath & safety laws/OSHA, or any health benefits. They're so much more than seniority benefits.
