My anticipation for these games has fluctuated massively over the past few months. When it was announced that not every Pok?mon would be able to be transferred in eventually, I basically decided that I was just going to stick with the older games. As time went on though, seeing Pok?mon like Polteageist and Sirfetch'd, alongside stuff I already liked like Corviknight and Grookey, I became more interested and willing to give these games a shot, and actually a bit excited.
With the posting of the Pok?dex earlier in the thread, seeing how significant the cuts to the roster really are, I've circled back around to being pretty unenthused about Sword & Shield and my future with the series.
The trainer customization additions and stuff like the Nature changing mints are really nice, but in some ways they doesn't feel sufficient. At the end of the day, it's a question of why I should care about dressing up my trainer when the roster has been so decimated. My playstyle for a long while has been to create teams based around themes, using Pok?mon from across all of the different generations, complete with fitting nicknames. The freedom to just construct a team in such a way is forever lost, since it was stated that not only was this culling permanent moving forward, but that it was actually intended to have started in Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. Pok?mon aren't gone forever and while they might be missing from one game they will show up in others, but no further games are intended to ever have a full Pok?dex again. Given Game Freak's statements, no patch or expansion should be expected, and even in the very unlikely event that either should happened, we'd just end up back here eventually.
I'm planning to at least give Shield a shot and see where I go from there. As it stands, I reckon this might be my last new adventure and I'll thereafter go with the original plan of sticking with the older games. Whatever the case, at least the release is nearly upon us.
