Pokémon Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield General Discussion

Just saw on twitter that #GameFreakLied is trending right now, ouch. Honestly, I have never seen the start of a new Pokemon Gen (and release of new games) causing such a madness which also splits the fandom in half because fans having way too different opinions on that topic. Like check out twitter and see how almost every SwSh related tweet turns into a huge augment.

To give a little context to this: As everyone probably knows Game Freak said the main reason for the cut pokemon were better models/animation etc. and the models had to be redone. Today it turned out the models are still the same old models from previous games, which makes Game Freaks reason a blatant lie to everyone's face. (To clarify: I'm not saying reusing pokemon models is bad, because the models are still holding up in my opinion, it is about GF telling lies about their reasons)

I love when fandoms get butthurt because we all know the majority of the people in it will buy the games anyway. Like, have an opinion, complain, whatever, just we gotta make a loud voice if we're unhappy. Hit them where it hurts to tell them, hey, you're being stupid. If they continue to make sales, they won't care.

Edit: Here's a list of problems in the game with picture and video proof. It's horrid. Gamefreak should be ashamed. https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/dv438w/complete_list_of_all_problems_known_so_far_in/

Sure there's definitely things I don't like about the new games, but I'm far from hating on and being nasty about it like a lot of fans are. I respect the devs even if I don't completely agree with all their decisions. All the nasty comments and death treats they are getting are beyond called for. I guess no one really knows what constructive criticism is anymore...

Despite everything I'm still getting the game on Friday I have a feeling I will still like and enjoy the game even if there are things about it that I don't like (Sun & Moon and Let's Go proved that to me). It's also fine for those that choose not to get the game because they aren't happy about it. It's totally their choice.

I just wish those that are looking at the games with a glass half empty approach would drop the hate and only offer constructive criticism, or just leave the fanbase altogether if they can't help but be nasty about it. I know that's never gonna happen though.

Today's world really makes me sad sometimes...

Seems the review embargo has just lifted in case anyone wanted to check out some of the reviews for these games.

I'm just quickly glancing over a few different reviews and of the ones I've been seeing they all have high scores despite the way some of the fanbase has been acting.

Like I've seen 82/100, 9/10, 9.3/10 all pretty decent scores. I'm going to wait to judge the game until I play it myself of course but it's good to know people who got to play it early are liking the game.

For those who are curious about the issues fans have about the games, here's a Reddit post that listed pretty much everything you need to know about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/dv438w/complete_list_of_all_problems_known_so_far_in/

I mean I do understand the fan's anger here, but those who going so far attacking others, to a point where they even sending out death treats and such needs to ******* chill.

Definitely not worth death threats. After all, it's just a game. However, fans shouldn't be expected to just gobble whatever GameFreak throws at them. It's time GameFreak steps it up and produce the game so it's worth its price point. It's just embarrassing at this point and someone needs to say something.

Exactly! It's perfectly fine for fans to be critical of the game and offer constructive criticism. Provided they are civil about it. Here's hoping they take it to heart and improve/fix these issues from happening again in the future. Though all the bashing and threats they keep getting is going to make that even harder due to poor morale.

Yes they deserve criticism but not all the bashing and threats.

It's like, who are you going to listen to? A screaming adult who swears and tells you to kill yourself or an adult telling you what things you can improve on. I myself would ignore the fans acting like children. Just the question is, how do we get Gamefreak to listen? By just buying the game, it basically validates what they're doing. Why would they change something if they're still getting money from it? I want this game to be good. It has so much potential and the fact that Gamefreak isn't taking full advantage sucks big time!

I agree with everyone, that some people are really going too far and are too hostile. They can be mad at GF, but keep it civil and fighting each other is of no use. Criticism is good otherwise companies will never listen. (See the Sonic movie, they actually made the design much better after the backlash.) GF has been lazy for a while, it is time they produce something that holds up to today's standards (compared to games like Zelda Botw and Mario Odyssey) and to the now higher pricepoint.

To add some positivity, at least the music I've heard sounds great. That's one thing they get right basically every time.

Despite hearing about the problems, I’ll still get the game. The only thing that would bother me are the technical issues and “how short the game is (you can beat the main game within a few hours, and the postgame is very light)”. My question is, how much data are they using to produce this game and Sun and Moon. If the data size for Sword and Shield exceeds Sun and Moon, I can see why they did all that.

I learned that the negativity towards Pok?mon has been going on for a while. It’s not just Sword and Shield. They also didn’t like Sun and Moon or X and Y. I think it’s time to start making video games (or write video game ideas) that reflect off of games based on your childhood (or other games you liked), but in new IPs.

One last question: what if Animal Crossing: New Horizons ends up being just as disappointing as Sword and Shield? I know ACNH isn’t related to Pok?mon, but I’m curious because of all this.

It's a possibility but at least Animal Crossing isn't GameFreak. We have that bonus to help ease our minds lmao.

Not a chance. They did the smart thing and delayed New Horizons. Development team not overworked + a game not chock full of cut corners = happy fans. :p

I highly doubt it will be for multiple reasons. First of all, GF develops Pokemon and TPC is responsible for managing the brand. AC is developed as a first-party title by Nintendo. Nintendo cares about their quality (see delays for Fire Emblem, AC or the restart of development on Metroid Prime). With Botw Nintendo made a huge leap for the Zelda franchise, while Pokemon games seem to be kinda stuck/stale, but that is another topic.
The huge problem I see with Pokemon are the yearly releases. SwSh feels rushed and GF didn't really have the option to push it back, considering this affects the trading card game, the anime and all the merchandise that is connected.

In my opinion, AC looked a lot better than SwSh from the very beginning, during their respective first trailers and reveals. In the treehouse presentation, AC was also able to shine, while the SwSh had a harder time and GF announced the dexit, that started the controversy around the game. The biggest "controversy" AC had so far was the exclusion of cloud saves I think? (I still hope those will be added.)

I mean in NH they added paws to the animals, but GF didn't even have the time/resources to get all pokemon and moves into the game..

In terms of a "few hours" I've been hearing the game takes about 20-30 from most experienced players. It's nothing crazy but when I hear a "few hours" I think of like 5 which I'm not sure if you meant or not.

To be fair, most Pokemon games aren't anything crazy for length aside from Gold/Silver/Crystal and their remakes. The last few games and even replaying the old games for me definitely don't take me all that long anymore as I'm a veteran of the series and I know what I'm doing most of the time. It's not like back when I was a kid and a super Pokemon noob blindly stumbling around not knowing what I was doing. I had 200 hours in Emerald before I finally beat it for the first time for example haha. Now, I'm not saying I don't find the games short, I definitely do but 20-30 hours for the main game sounds about normal to me for the series as of late. Lack of postgame is definitely sucky though. It would be nice to see more content in the series moving forward.

I totally agree. I remember the few angry fans back when X and Y were revealed and it only got worse as Sun and Moon came along. So while Dexit is a major factor for the explosion of negativity for Sword and Shield it was really just a tipping point. This anger has been brewing over the course of the last few generations. I get it, but I just wish people weren't being so hateful about it.

Despite my issues with the dex, I'm too local to care about the models and other stuff to be honest, so I just ordered Shield anyway. New pokemon is new pokemon, so pretty hyped!

So, who all got the game earlier this morning (12 am, midnight release), or is planning to get it later in the day?

I plan on getting it after I get my tattoo done~ I really want a tattoo of all the grass starters, but this tat is something special withmt sister, so I can?t pass it up lol. I plan on getting Shield. Hopefully it isn?t sold out by the time I get to GameStop!

Anyways. I plan on choosing Grookey! No matter how ugly I think their evolutions are... meh. I still love Grookey, and can?t wait to attempt to soft-reset for a shiny, if possible! Since I did that in Moon and Ultra Sun (shiny Rowlet on my first SR both times), I will try to soft-reset for shiny Grookey c:

If I can?t figure out how to SR, I?ll just hunt for a shiny Gossifleur or maybe Wooloo! Is everyone excited to shiny hunt? ^^
