Pokémon Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield General Discussion

Update: about 10/11 hours in, just beat the fourth gym, I really like this game. Comparing it to Sun/Moon seems like a disservice, but its so far feeling like one of my favorite Pokemon games.

The gyms especially are fantastic, they're just so hype. The mini game for 3/4 so far had been fun, unique and really stand out from the rest of the series (Nessa was kinda 'by the books' and typical). The gym battle music is great, especially when they are on their last Pokemon, a small cut scene plays where the music builds up and it all drops back in with crowd chanting. Again, it's just so hype. I hated the idea of gigantimax before this yet the atmosphere of gym battles really brought me around.

So far I have an entirely different team from usual too. None of the Pokemon in my current lineup have ever been in my team, and I quite like it. It's a huge welcome change from just being able to catch/trade my old team immediately since given the choice, I would just go with the same 6 I always do. Mawile and Gardevoir are two of my team regulars, but I've opted to not have them given the rest aren't availible (to the extent I got shield since Mawile isn't in it).

Wild area is great too. I dont mind the loss of a few routes given the wild area more than makes up for it.

At this point all I can say is anybody skipping or boycotting this game is just missing out. I could go on all.day about how bad Game Freak are, but theyve put together a really fun game, possibly the best since Platinum (and I liked Black/White and X/Y)

Just beat the third gym battle. This is what my team is looking like at the moment.

Toxik the male Toxel, Lv. 5
Ivory the male Eldegoss, Lv. 27
Lochness the female Barraskewda, Lv. 27
Yang the female Sirfetch’d, Lv. 27
Valkyrie the female Corvisquire, Lv. 28
Inferno the male Raboot, Lv. 28

Originally I was going to have Deino/Zweilous/Hydreigon on my team, but after learning you can’t obtain them until later in Pokemon Sword, I opted to just go with a full generation eight Pokemon team including the Pokemon you get at the nursery. Prefer its typing compared to Hydreigon’s too, as it only has a couple weaknesses and I needed something besides Corviknight that’s good against fairies. Having an electric type is cool too.

Also, I agree with Tao wholeheartedly on everything said. The wild area makes up for the lack of routes because there’s literally SO MUCH to explore. Anyone who isn’t playing this game really is missing out. :)

I have a question about hidden abilities. What is the best way to get a hidden ability Eevee in Sword and Shield? And yes, I specify Eevee since I want Magic Bounce.

I bought the game on launch day. I was surprised that my EB Games still had them in stock as I was expecting them to be sold out.

My overall thoughts on this game in a nutshell are that IT'S SO AWESOME!

...Still looking for a shiny male Skwovet though. X3

i wasnt that interested in buying the game but my friend said its really fun when u have people to play with so i might as well. hes going to give me a lvl 1 snom and dreepy whenever we can trade so i am happy
i also really like morpeko, cursola, hatterene and polteageist

Just beat the fifth gym and my team is fully evolved now.

Lochness the female Barraskewda, Lv. 36
Ivory the male Eldegoss, Lv. 37
Yang the female Sirfetch’d, Lv. 37
Toxik the male Toxtricity, Lv. 38
Valkyrie the female Corviknight, Lv. 38
Inferno the male Cinderace, Lv. 39

Still don’t know whether I want to use Toxtricity or Hydreigon on my team as the sixth slot. I’ll probably end up using Hydreigon when I get to that point in the game, just because it’s a Sword exclusive and an older favorite of mine, and it will also give my team a power boost and a leg up on the final gym leader of the game. Still having a ton of fun with the playthrough either way.

Just a guess, but Austin John mentioned catching things with egg moves and maybe hidden abilities by looking for a specific occurrence in the field. Not sure if eevee is available like that though.

I also heard that you can look for Eevee in the vast wild area, and dynamaxed Pok?mon do have a higher chance of hidden ability, so that might solve my problem.

On the way to gym 6, all I can say is that 4+5 continued to be pleasant surprises with their pre fight gimmicks, though again,
Answer questions right or wrong, get a buff or debuff for right or wrong answers. Neat that the gym leader asks you multiple questions during the battle.

Some of the questions are stupid 'in a good way' too, like "how old am I?". She's obviously an old lady, so when you pick 88 years old instead of 16 she's like "you're right, but you could have been nicer about it" and debuffs you anyway. I thought that was funny.

I know gyms have always had little gimmicks, but I feel for the longest time the majority have have been a bit "oh, it's that one" without anything really surprising me or feeling like much effort into making it feel unique.

Luma - female Salazzle
Mallow - female Dubwool
Dici - male Toxtricity
Taki - female Corviknight
Candy - female Rapidash
Teepo - male Seismitoad

Really want a Tyrannitar (gonna call it Gojira) but don't know who I would replace with it. May be tempted to swap out Seismitoad, but I've also raised it from a little tadpole, so I'm committed now.

I'm debating on which form of Toxtricity to use. My current Toxel will evolve into the low key form but I think I like the amped up form more... I'm conflicted.

Apparently the amped up form is the better one, I think it learns two different moves.

I have amped up, but that's just what my Toxel happened to evolve into. I just googled the differences because I was curious.
