Post here and tell your fellow Pokemon fans about your experience with hunting for the elusive shiny Pokemon!

I'm sorry if this thread already exists, but I really need some help/reassurance.

So I've been shiny hunting for Absol with my DexNav for about 2 days now, my search level is up to 323 (all of them hidden Except the very 1st ofc), and I have had zero luck finding a shiny. I feel like I've wasted so much time doing this (at least 10 hours), and yet I had dome shred of hope that I'll find a shiny.

What was your experience shiny hunting (in any game, I'm playing Omega Ruby), and how long did it take you to finally find the shony you wanted? I really feel like giving up but I would love to have a shiny Absol that has me as the OT.

You're not alone. It takes me hours of either soft resetting or chaining to actually catch a shiny, and sometimes I give up in frustration. My record right now is 2,231 times... to catch a shiny Magikarp. You should see people on Youtube- a lot of Youtubers stream for hours, trying to catch a shiny legendary. Shiny chaining is definitely no joke! It takes a lot of time and patience; not to mention Pokeballs.

If you have time for an anecdote, my first shiny experience was absolutely horrible.

If you've played RSE (I see you've played ORAS; I believe the storyline advanced the same in this way), you'll probably remember helping Wally catch his first Pokemon, a Ralts. I first did this in Pokemon Sapphire.

Well, that Ralts happened to be shiny. You've no idea how jealous and angry I was :(

I didn't catch a shiny until the Diamond and Pearl games, when I stumbled upon a yellow colored Shinx.

I finally got revenge with Alpha Sapphire, when I bred a shiny Ralts and evolved it into a Gallade, but that took me days to accomplish. So in short- it's normal to spend hours trying to catch and breed a shiny.

Try breeding a shiny with 6IVs. That's living hell XD

I hope I offered some reassurance!

^^ I've heard of that happening, where Wally gets a shiny Ralts. I'm so glad I've never seen that in Sapphire or Omega Ruby. :,D
I've been playing sapphire for about 6 years and I've never seen a shiny on there. I also have Pearl and never saw one.

What really makes me mad is that my search level with Absol is up to 510 now (Ive spent at least 5 days in hours hunting for it) and the other day I went to Victory Road to level grind and the first Pokemon I found was a shiny Golbat. I was really happy because it's the first shiny I've ever found, but I'm also ticked because I just wasted so much time trying to find a shiny Absol and never found one.

I also just found out that DexNav chaining really only exists in XY, and not ORAS (though I do believe the chances are reduced to 1/512, I can't confirm it though). I'm hoping to get one soon enoufh. I'll feel so relieve when I do!!

Ty for your comment btw ^o^

Hey, I think we've talked about this before and you don't have S/M/US/UM, but I would definitely be interested in trading for the shiny Golbat if you did! I've always really liked Crobat.

Would be happy to swap a shiny or two back your way if you wanted to connect, but I understand if the Golbat has sentimental value as your first.

Good luck with the search for Absol!

Yeah, he's already a Crobat and I've been using him a lot so he'll stick with me. And thanks!! It's a long search but I think it'll pay off :D

Aw, I wish I could trade you my shiny absol, but you want it under your OT :(

Lol, my absol has been bred for competitive purposes only, so I guess it'd do okay in casual gameplay? I don't know :)
If there's anything you need, Pokemon wise, just let me know and I'll see what I can do!

Hmm well I once found a Shiny Audino while training my Pokemon in White 2 to beat Iris. The only shiny I bothered putting effort to finding was Swablu which I successfully found in ORAS. :) It's currently in Sun and Moon.

I wish I could have a Shiny Aegislash but breeding for it has been hell so far.

Tbh if I get desperate enough I might consider trading you lol
I've got my search level up to about 550 now, and still no shiny. I'm gonna keep trying though!

The best I can tell you is that shiny Pok?mon strike when you least expect! The shiny I am most proud of catching is my shiny Drowsee( is now Hypno) in Pok?mon G/S/C... random encounter in Route 15(?) north of Goldenrod... I still can not believe the slim odds of that encounter. I have traded it all the way up to the current gen and plan to keep it forever!
@Flare: I understand how you feel about the shiny Honedge/ Aegislash... I want that one pretty badly too..

PS my most recent chain for a shiny Stufful took over 100 encounters and three day of chaining to get... it was a nightmare but I got it just as was reaching that point of hopelessness.
Shinies do happen! Never give up!

And I really hope you get your shiny.

I had a likely-hacked perfect IV Stufful show up as my first wonder trade. Keep in mind that I was playing Ultra Moon after not having played since basically the Game Boy Color days.

I don't mind obviously hacked Pokemon (though I frankly don't use them). But I especially try to trade them again if their OT name is a website link or something like that.

Also, as cool as some shiny Pokemon are, most of them are garbage to look at. Like, I have two shiny Blisseys, somehow. And unless I am looking side-by-side at a regular Blissey, it looks almost exactly the same.

Aw, you named it Retsuko :')

I honestly don't mind hacked Pokemon, as long as they're allowed in Battle Spot.

'grats on the shiny Absol! It's a pretty one! :D

I've been hunting Dratini today. I've an almost 500 SOS chain on Sun for it, and while chain-fishing for it in X I've come across four other shinies instead: two red-striped Basculin and two Poliwhirls.

Managed to Masuda a Popplio last night though.

I've been thinking about doing the masuda method for getting a shiny but I feel like I would be too impatient with it. How long did it take you to do it?

I started shiny hunting for an Eevee last night, and I have my search level up to about 230 now. If I find one I'll be really happy cause I'd love to have a shiny Espeon

I actually prefer the egg method, of course I like going for egg moves, natures, ha and such.

My first shiny Pok?mon was a shiny Hoothoot on my Pok?mon Soulsilver. It was one of the first Pok?mon I caught.

Thanks!

I managed to get Popplio within 53 eggs, but I had gone hundreds of eggs in a previous hunt I'd given up with (for Mareanie) so it wasn't really as quick as it seems. I find Masuda kind of tedious but I think it's the easiest method. You can't really mess it up.

After breaking a 550+ SOS chain in Sun I went back to fishing in X and after a third(!) Poliwhirl finally caught a shiny Dratini! :D

I found a way to find a shiny in Pok?mon sun/moon! I caught a shiny delibird!

Any form of shiny hunting is a nightmare, in my opinion. Even with the shiny charm AND the Masuda breeding method I'm still going through the nightmare of trying to get a shiny Fomantis in a Heal Ball. SOS Battles can take up to two hours on a good day, but if you don't regularly KO the original target and focus on its ally, it'll eventually run out of moves and use Struggle, instantly reducing it's HP from 1 to 0.

I've tried asking for help on forums from here to GameFAQs only to pretty much be told I have no right to ask for a shiny Pokemon in a specific type of Pokeball. I've just about given up on shiny hunting altogether. Unless GameFreak wants to make it guaranteed easy, it's not worth it for ANY Pokemon in my opinion.

It's about playing smart. Know the methods and do the right prep (e.g. a Pok?mon with the right abilities and moveset) and it's not difficult - just time consuming.

e.g. a Pok?mon with the Harvest ability, the moves Bestow+Skill Swap, and holding a leppa berry can prevent struggle in an SOS battle by using Bestow to give the berry to the call in Pok?mon and then using Skill Swap to also give it the Harvest ability. This way it'll infinitely replenish it's own PP. Trick can also be used instead of Bestow IIRC. It takes a lot of work to prep that Pok?mon of course, but once you've got it SOS'ing becomes a lot less stressful.
