Was Turkey Day a preview for how cooking might work in the game?

It's long been rumored that cooking would be coming to the game at some point, as a handful of other vegetable names have been found in previous datamines. It would seem like it would have made sense to introduce cooking and other vegetables before Turkey Day, but I thought Turkey Day also offered some insights into how this could work in the future.

Some observations:
  1. Villagers that were indoors replaced their DIY table with a stove or system kitchen (unless they already had kitchen furniture in their house. Lolly was working at her kitchen island, for example)

  2. The indoor villagers had a new "cooking" animation when working

  3. By default, the indoor villagers were wearing chef outfits, but I noticed in some screenshots, some player's villagers were wearing aprons (that I assumed were gifted by the player previously). This seems to suggest some clothing items are designated for cooking, the same way there are exercise outfits, or rain outfits.

It seems like if they add cooking, it will be just like DIYs, and you would get recipes from your villagers the same way you do DIYs.

After today, do you think cooking is more likely or less likely to be coming to the game later?

Well to be honest i was not so hopeful as you but as i read you second point it got me thinking, ah! they actually did have a new animation ! this could be a positive like little teaser from Nintendo to its fans, like their way of saying "okey we heard ya and we are working on it". If we ever finally get more harvestable vegetables and as an extension cooking I really really wish it will be with like through a new mini game mechanism were it simulates kinda like you are actually cooking or doing something , you know? For me the worst would be to introduce cooking and have the same mechanism as any other DIY craft but in a stove for food, this would just brake my heart ! For me if they ever introduce it, they have to make it stand up specially since no other series has had this feature, so the gameplay dynamics has to be different than regular DIY crafting.

I hope you’re kinda right, though I would hope it would be more like how cooking was in the sims 3 even though i am well aware this game is not the sims 3. To prevent myself from being disappointed, if cooking is introduced at all, I am expecting honestly - the bare minimum, what this event was like. i honestly kinda expected more to it and it to show us eating i, give us interactions with the food (and the food as decor), and be directly involved cooking or doing something besides gathering stuff.

And sorry. I don’t mean to be rude or debbie downer; my mom kind messed up my day and am extremely depressed right now. I had fun but could’ve probably enjoyed the event more regardless how it ended up being if my mom hadn’t come in. :/

I like to think that one day we could maybe get a food related update that adds the cafe and cooking.

Having a stove or oven-like DIY table would be interesting to have in the game. Especially since there are already stoves in this game. Maybe they'd have more of a use. But I don't know what to expect.

Pretty much that's how it's gonna work. Take a look at the Coconut Juice DIY. Cooking is no different with crafting. Except you're using food items.

This is such a great way to obtain food items!! I wish this were true, though it sounds like there’s a lot of hope of it being so!!!

I think this is a really great way to approach it. I am certainly hopeful cooking will come next year, especially as both Halloween and Turkey Day do seem to pre-empt it with farming, animations and the datamines so far have all been spot on.

I love the idea we get cooking recipes from our villagers it always feels a bit special to make something when you know if came from someone.

I'm also hopeful cooking can have a more collaborative effect even only in aesthetics. So for example it comes with being able to invite villagers to our homes and gift them food. I've also always been quite hopeful it comes with Brewster, so the Roost has a kitchen and you get to make food and snacks as well as coffee for everyone, but it's just a wish on my part.

Thinking about why it was'nt in the recent update, it's possible that they either did'nt get it ready in time (cooking) or they actually always planned to release it more around spring, where starting to plant and harvest feels a bit more appropriate, rather than say planting just before winter and the snow.

Also I feel like year 1 they really wanted to get in the key features and seasonal bits missing from NL, so after we've had a 1 year cycle of content that's when we can get some more "new" mechanics to the game......pure specualtion though.

But yes I want cooking, I want to make everyone on our discord delicious meals and seeing how beautiful the food was for turkey day.....yeah we need more of that...

The thing I'm wondering is if data miners found anything that wasn't used for the Turkey Day event, or was going to be used for it but was scrapped - once the update came out, Ninji went through the new events and tweeted, "this is not the kind of cooking I expected in Animal Crossing but I guess it's something". After reading that, I started doubting whether or not we'd be getting anything else.

On the other hand, there's a definite lack of food items compared to HHD/NL:WA, so I really want some way to get those, even if, as has been mentioned, it's like the food DIYs we currently have, like coconut juice, where you just craft it normally.

That would be such a cute way to get DIY recipes for food items in the future!! They were super cute in their chef outfits too 🥺. Maybe we could get crafts during typical eating times like morning you can find a breakfast craft, noon a lunch type craft, etc. Just please don't make us hunt for food in balloons nintendo lol.

I hope ur right, I mean I can't imagine nintendo never implementing food items. And if they do its such an easy choice to make diy recipes for them. So I kinda think it will be that way

The thing that I hope is positive about them not having food items in the game (aside from a few notable mentions) from the start is that maybe they had a plan for cooking all along that makes cooked items a bit special. For example I really hope we can both display cooked items and also eat them, give them to villagers as well etc. The dream would be that different receipes have different effects, but this might be too far fetched.

All wishful thinking still

Ohhhh that sounds so good!
We won't know untill it happens, but at least it gives me a bit of hope:)

I’d be more excited to collect food DIYs than normal DIYs. The food items we saw during Turkey Day looked delicious. It’d be nice if the recipe cards were recoloured to easily differentiate them. I think you’re on the right track with saying recipes will be in DIY form, and I can see campers bringing their recipes from other places too.

While unlikely (and no doubt annoying after awhile), it’d be cool if the animation/action for crafting recipes were different. Maybe a different item is used to craft as opposed to a bench or you have to press a button within a certain window.

I'm with you on cooking having their own DIY's, I think the datamine had seperate entries for DIYs, Cooking and Sewing. so hopefully. I'm also hoping if it does come we don't use the workbench but cooking pots, ovens etc

i hope it means it's more likely, i wanna cook up some cute food for my villager to eat, and even gift to others!

that would be cool, but if cooking does come to ACNH I hope that we can interact with what we are making more, like by stirring soup or chopping veggies or something instead of just selecting the materials and having it be instantly made.

I feel like a key point between cooking food items and DIYs is that the food items have to have a different function in the end. Otherwise, if you just create a furniture item, like a fruit basket, then I think it makes for sense for that to be a DIY. That mechanism is already there. But if they’re going to introduce a cooking mechanism to craft a food item, we should be able to eat it and there should be some reaction or consequence to eating. Like how Brewster made different coffees and different characters had different preferences of how they took their coffee. I mean, when you eat a fruit nowadays, you get special powers:D So they could probably figure out something fun for other foods or desserts or drinks that we would cook! Definitely not something that would relate to replenishing energy, like getting hungry or needing to replenish HP like in other games - the idea of starving in Animal Crossing is too foreign, and this is a casual family game, so I wouldn’t want to leave for a month and come back and find my island rep dead of starvation!;) But making fun treats for ourselves and especially for villager requests would definitely be interesting:)
