Nintendo Direct Tomorrow (FEB 17)

I'm hoping for ACNH stuff (other than the Mario stuff) but I'm gonna not get excited to avoid being disappointed. There's not really any current games out there that I care about besides AC so most of it probably won't be relevant to me.

Either way though, I hope they show stuff worth showing.

On one hand, I'm always up for ACNH stuff. On the other, I feel like with at least three weeks left to go (assuming the update might come out for Mario Day), getting what would probably be a tiny amount of information for everyone to obsess over for a month - think how everyone assumed we'd be able to access the fourth level from the Halloween trailer, or just the entire pre-release New Horizons subforum - would be hell.

Other than that, I hope we get more information on NEO TWEWY and Rune Factory 5. Not sure there's anything else I've been looking forward to, besides the next Story of Seasons, which is coming out in a bit over a month, anyway.

My interest is piqued by the mention of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in that tweet. Maybe an announcement for the next DLC character?

If possible, I would also like for a solid release date to be announced for Shin Megami Tensei V since the only release information thus far is a simultaneous worldwide release in "early(?) 2021".

Other than that, I usually don't go into these things with expectations or hype so I'm just along for the ride.

Here’s my prediction:

  • Bravely Default 2 (more gameplay)
  • The World Ends With You sequel (extended trailer)
  • No More Heroes 3 (new trailer + release date)
  • Pokémon Snap (brief new trailer)
  • Short segment on Zelda anniversary: Age of Calamity DLC + Skyward Sword/Wind Waker/Twilight Princess all in one port
  • Smash Bros new character (it’ll be a first party Nintendo character OR Rabbid/Rayman).
  • Speaking of Rabbids, Rayman Rabid Rabbids 2 coming out in May.
  • Sneak peak to Animal Crossing March update (and maybe a hint of things to come).
  • Direct wraps with a Mario Kart 9 trailer. Releasing late June or early July.
Also, calling it now: No mention of Botw 2, Metroid or SMT V.

i'd like something about MK9. i don't know how likely it is, but i'd like to think fairly? MK8 has been out for years now, and deluxe is only a port with minimal additions. we're overdue a new installment by MK standards, i think? (i don't count whatever that home tour thing was.)

other than that, i'd hope for something addressing the future of NH -- not just the mario update but beyond that. i know it's unlikely, but honestly i'm just tired of being so in the dark about the future of a game i invested so much time/money into when they arguably released it incomplete with the promise of future updates that nobody knows anything about until maybe three days before they're released.

i'm not really interested in any other nintendo games tbh. pokemon is getting its own thing next week, so if there's a new mainline title coming out it'll be discussed then instead of in this direct. i'll always cross my fingers for a princess peach (or just mario princesses in general) focused game, but that's a pipe dream and i know it.

It seems like we're definitely getting a new SSBU character reveal. Also, this picture was tweeted by Sakurai on 1/17. It seems like it may have been a hint about the reveal, since the numbers on the scoreboard seem to match up with the date of the direct (the time is 02:21, and the KOs total and Damage total numbers are binary for 1 and 7).

The question now, is... is there also a hint here as to who the character is?!

My current totally untrue tin-foil-hat-style guesses are:
* Kubfu/Urshifu - I still think we're going to get a Pokemon rep from Gen 8 at some point. It's a fighting type (repped by Min-Min), and a Pokemon (repped by Mewtwo).
* M. Bison - Maybe they're going to go all out with the villainous DLC characters after Sephiroth. He's from a fighting game (like Min-Min) and he also has psychic powers (like Mewtwo). Why Min-Min and not Ryu, then? Because that would have been a little too obvious! (also it's totally not going to be M. Bison).
* Ryu Hayabusa - Because he's coming eventually and Sakurai loves to troll the fanbase, so it's probably a character who has nothing to do with Min-Min or Mewtwo. Although... Ryu means dragon and Min-Min is dragon-themed... 🧐

I was totally wrong about Sephiroth, so I'm expecting to be wrong here, too. But... what if I'm right?

Honestly don’t care what they present in the Direct since all the games I have and want for the Switch are out already. If they present something I’m interested in, great, but if they don’t then that’s fine too.

Lots of Zelda news, sadly a limited time collection again i bet, botw2 news, and a few surprises

Smash bros character announcement or big update, it seems like yesterday Sephiroth was released

3rd party games

Hopefully Metroid Prime 4 update

A few surprises no one saw coming at the end

-I know its not gonna happen list-

-rare replay for Switch

-N64 games added to online subscription

-F Zero return

At a point in my life where its difficult to find time to play games

So overall no expectations. I couldn't have cared less about Sephiroth or Steve. Hopefully we got some more core nintendo characters if theres DLC. I'm so over the gimmick of third party characters.

Shin Megami Tensei V gameplay would be amazing, and obviously Zelda and Metroid anniversaries.

to be honest, i don’t really see them saying much about animal crossing, if they say anything at all, but fingers crossed. this’ll be my first nintendo direct (excluding the ac one last year) so i’m excited to have a new experience, at least. :’)

To be quite honest, I don't really have any hopes or predictions for this Direct, mainly since I feel like getting my expectations up will ultimately just lead to me being disappointed, whereas if I just go in with no expectations and an open mind then hey, maybe there'll be a couple of things that end up being nice surprises for me.

I will say that this is the first Direct I'll half-watch/listen to live (I haven't really had the chance to before because of work, lol), so that's exciting in and of itself.

Well I'm hoping for future Animal Crossing update news/teaser beyond the Mario update.

I'd also love to see a remake announced for Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War.

What I predict will happen? Probably neither of the above honestly.

I feel like we'll get to see some BotW 2. It's about time they showed us something. Even if they don't show that game I'm sure Zelda will be represented in the direct in some capacity. I honestly don't think Nintendo will do a huge thing with the anniversary like they did for Mario but I think we'll get a port or two at the very least.

It might be a long shot but I really hope we'll get to see Metroid Prime 4 tonight. Or maybe another 2D entry. I would personally be more hyped for the latter. Mercury Steam who did Samus Returns for the 3DS have been awfully quiet and I wouldn't be too surprised if a new game was announced in the direct. Still not likely, but I feel like there's a chance.

As much as I'd love to see Nintendo revive the F-Zero franchise, I've come to accept that it's probably gone forever. I don't think we'll see Mario Kart 9 or a Super Mario Odyssey sequel either. Mother 3 - never gonna happen. Some Animal Crossing stuff. Lots of Smash as usual too *sigh*.

I can't believe it's been a year and a half since the last proper direct. Let's go!

HOLY CRAP PYRA IS IN SMASH. Finally, another Xenoblade rep! YES!
