Nintendo Direct Tomorrow (FEB 17)

Well.. I was wrong again with my prediction for the Smash character. I was legitimately surprised to see another Xenoblade character added, but at least there are people out there who care about Pyra. I'm not exactly thrilled to see yet another sword character in Smash, but I'm not surprised, either.

Well I'm hoping for future Animal Crossing update news/teaser beyond the Mario update.

I'd also love to see a remake announced for Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War.

What I predict will happen? Probably neither of the above honestly.

Well like I figured none of that happened. Splatoon 3 announcement/teaser more than made up for it for me personally though. :)

Best part for me was Skyward Sword HD, sadly Wind Waker and Twilight Priness are still stuck on Wii U.

Smash DLC was cool, need more female characters honestly.

Still debating on picking up Monster Hunter

Nothing else was for me

Also I know I'll be picking up those Zelda joy cons.... even if joy con drift, being a fear...

finally, fall guys on the switch. shame we still have to wait until the summer, but i'll take it.

also happy to see a miitopia port with extra features. i loved that game on 3DS and considered replaying it but didn't want to restart. now i don't have to! not gonna lie, i would've preferred a tomodachi life port/sequel, but i bet you any money they're avoiding it because of the desire for same-sex couples. they'd definitely get backlash for overlooking it again, and rightly so.

shame there was no MK9, but i'm not entirely surprised, and at least i was semi-right about AC even if it was just the mario update and not the game's future beyond that.

Hm... desert aesthetic is pretty unfitting for Splatoon, wish they would've went with a different theme. However, I'm not sure if it's just one level or most of them. The customization options look good, though.

Aside from Splatoon 3, I'm looking forward to: Mario Golf, Fall Guys, Miitopia, Star Wars Hunters, Zelda: Skyward Sword, and the ACNH Mario update!

I'm surprised there wasn't a announcement for a NH solo direct, hopefully within the weeks we'll see. Twitter is usually their news platform...

My thoughts on the Nintendo direct:

Famicon Detective ~ I LOVE detective games so I might be picking up one or both of these if the price is right. I find a lot of detective games end up being sort of poorly executed though so I'm trying to be cautious with my expectations.

Monster Hunter Rise ~ I have no thoughts on this except that the new special edition switch looks sexy lol

Mario Golf ~ I am actually kind of interested in this, I used to have Mario golf on my gameboy advance and it was actually a nice calming kinda chill game so that's a maybe

Miitopia ~ 🤔 I don't really know but my interest has been piqued

Animal Crossing ~ I am SO INCREDIBLY hyped for the warp pipe and the other furniture looks good too.

Apex Legends ~ Definitely interested. I like the game but I don't have any friends to play with on PC (and I'm not very good at the game so playing with randos is awkward...) I will definitely take the Switch version for a spin and see if the aim assist can help me out.

Splatoon 3 ~ I've never played Splatoon, don't know if I should get in to it? I won't deny it looked interesting. But also I thought Splatoon 2 was still alive and well so I don't necessarily know why they need a new game? But maybe this is a sign that I need to jump on the bandwagon.

Other than the Smash character, the only thing they talked about that piqued my interest was project Triangle Strategy. I'll be curious to keep an eye on that title, for sure.

I'm really excited about Skyward Sword HD. I was kinda hoping it'd be bundled with the Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ports, but I'm glad at least one of them is coming over. I also wasn't expecting Splatoon 3 at all! I think it looks really good I love the vibe and the fact that we get a little buddy

I’m honestly most excited for Mario Golf, lol. And I’m totally okay with that because I have a backlog I’m trying to get rid of.

Feels like 2022 is gonna be filled with highly anticipated titles, though.

I'm very happy for the Skyward Sword port. We didn't get the Wii back in the day so it's pretty much a brand new game for me. Being able to play it without motion controls is a fantastic bonus.

But the game that really got me was Legend of Mana. I've been wanting to play this for so long. Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana are two of my favorite games of all time. I was so hyped for Legend of Mana when it was announced back in 1999. Man was I disappointed when we europeans didn't even get the game. But being able to play this soon for the first time kinda makes up for it. And those backgrounds look beautiful! Really wasn't expecting this one.

Like, I understand that COVID has heavily impacted development for Nintendo, but what have they really been doing in their development since 2019? Seriously besides Animal Crossing all it's been since the middle of 2019 is port city, and it looks like that's all we'll continue to get until Mario Golf (lol) this summer and Splatoon next year.

Also lowkey kind of po'd about Splatoon because it seems like the AC/Splatoon team pushed out a half-baked ACNH just to turn around and pump out another Splatoon (don't get me wrong I love me some Splatoon but still) that doesn't immediately strike me as...necessary? Like at first glance there's not a ton new...but we'll see later on when we actually get more info about it. Would've rather had Animal Crossing in 2018/19 and had them move Splatoon 2 up to now - would've given both games more time in the oven.

i am xenoblade 2's biggest hater but i dont play smash anymore so its whatever
my switch has been collecting dust for a few months now but i might consider replaying skyward sword and im definitely getting splatoon 3 (smt v too but that wasnt featured this time)

Splatoon 3. Miitopia port.

The 2 games I'm most hyped for. I thought I was out of my Splatoon obsession...
but splatoon 3 dragged me down by the ankles and pulled me right back into the fandom's deepest parts.

I'm excited for Miitopia, since it was fantastic on the 3DS. Excited to see it on the switch along with the new features it has to offer!
i also want to fall in love with a horse that sounds like a really great time

My dislike for Splatoon has grown even more. Is this why Animal Crossing was as lackluster as it was when it first came out? Not only that, but now there will have been 2 Splatoon games released before the next Mario Kart game, and that is including 8 deluxe. I’m not saying I expected them to say anything on a new Mario Kart game, but it is still annoying to see them constantly push out Splatoon games when others have been waiting longer for a sequel.

- The most interesting reveal for me today was Triangle Strategy. I really like the looks of it. Shame that it's not coming out until 2022, but something to look forward to.

- While I've never played a Xenoblade game, I know that Rex and Pyra had been characters that there was some interest for so I'm happy that people got at least part of their wish fulfilled with Pyra and Mythra. Their Smash moveset looks fun so I'm looking forward to their addition to the roster.

- Not particularly interested in most of the Mario stuff being added to Animal Crossing New Horizons other than the Peach dress and crown and the Warp Pipe. The Warp Pipe is a really nice addition.

- Miitopia getting a Switch port is nice, but while I own the original on the 3DS and enjoy it, I don't think I can justify paying $60 for a game I already own just for a graphical upgrade and more customization.

- The reveal of Splatoon 3 makes me glad that I didn't get Splatoon 2 when I sort of considered it last year. I'd heard that 2 wasn't really supported with new content for a while, so I reckoned it would be better to wait for an eventual sequel. I still don't know whether I will get into Splatoon in the future or not, but maybe.

- It's a shame, though not unexpected, that there was no solid release date for Shin Megami Tensei V liked I'd wanted. Maybe next Direct.

That was the first Direct I watched (well, half-watched), and it was interesting. I want to focus on positive vibes, so I'll jot down some notes about some of the games I liked:
  • Mario Golf: Super Rush definitely looks good. I've played a bunch of Mario sports games, including two previous installments in the Mario Golf series (the original N64 game and the 3DS game), so I'll end up getting this one as well. Hopefully, with Mario Tennis and now Mario Golf on the Switch, this opens the door for Mario Strikers (my favorite of the Mario sports games) to get its own game on the Switch, lol
  • Project Triangle Strategy definitely piqued my interest. I've downloaded the demo and plan to play through it shortly. I'll have to keep my eye on this moving forward.
  • Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity getting DLC doesn't surprise me, but I'm still happy about it. I just finished 100%ing it, so getting the DLC will be a good excuse to play it again down the road, lol
  • I'm not too surprised by Skyward Sword getting a remake on the Switch, as it's been rumoured for awhile, but I'm still pretty happy about it. I've been wanting to replay through the entire Legend of Zelda series at some point, and SS is a game I didn't mind but I only played through once (with that being when I first got it), so I might just end up getting the remake since it'll (hopefully) be a lot nicer to play through than the original
  • Splatoon 3 getting another sequel already came as a surprise to me. I've only played the original Splatoon (I didn't realize Splatoon 2 wasn't just a port of Splatoon onto the Switch but an actual sequel, oops, my bad), but I enjoyed it and 3 looks good so far. Definitely something to look forward to in 2022.

Don't get me wrong...there were some nice things. But, the pacing of these directs is always all wrong.

Opening with the Smash announcement was smart...since, the character reveal was honestly pretty weak. (Another humanoid character/set of characters with swords and a very niche following). After that...a lot of pretty underwhelming stuff until the announcement of Mario Golf and Triangle Strategy. Speaking of which, Triangle Strategy looks great...but, that's a 2022 game. At least they had a demo to announce. Otherwise, it would have been pointless.

Some other nice announcements along the way...Skyward Sword (which I never played, because I refused to buy the motion plus controller)...a remaster of Legend of Mana which looks very nice. Ninja Gaiden three-pack doesn't really appeal to me, but it's always good to have more remasters. The reveal of the Mario items for Animal Crossing was a point of interest for obvious reasons.

And then you had that ending. Now...I'm not a Splatoon guy, mostly because it's multiplayer. So, I'm watching this trailer...and it's honestly looking a lot like a Splatoon adventure game. I'm kinda digging it. Then it says "Splatoon 3" and it's just more of the same. Not a strong finish, IMO. Finishing with Mario Golf would have been a much more solid choice. Also, I have to say...it seems a bit insulting that Splatoon already has a third game when we're still waiting on key Nintendo franchises like Metroid, Star Fox, etc. It's like...how fast can they rush these Splatoon games out...and how different are they really that they require entirely new builds? Could then not have just added more maps via DLC and called it a day?

-Pyra/Mythra: HYPE!!!! I’ve wanted a XC2 character in Smash for awhile, so this was perfect for me! 😁
-Famicom Detective: I was probably the only one who was genuinely excited for this. 😅 The games look so interesting and they gave me Phoenix Wright vibes minus the court cases.
-Mario Golf: I was never a fan of the Mario sports games and this game won’t sway me otherwise.
-Triangle Factory (working title): This game is perfect for fans of Octopath and FE3H (aka me) so I was hyped, especially since the demo is available now!
-ACNH Update: Nothing much to be honest, but the warp pipes are cool in the sense that they allow for fast travel on your island.
-Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity DLC: I’m not interested at all tbh. They seem to be adding those scientists that nobody cares about as characters.
-Skyward Sword HD: The most overrated announcement by far. The graphics are terrible for a game that claims to be in HD and the sword and joystick thing looks terrible. To be honest, this direct for terrible for Zelda...
-Splatoon 3: I’m not a Splatoon 3 fan and even this got me a little excited. It was a nice way to end the direct.

Also, to all the people who complain about another sword fighter in Smash. All the recent sword fighter additions play differently, so who honestly cares or even notices what weapon they wield. 🤷‍♂️
