Pokémon Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet General Discussion

Legendaries really got out of hand also. Most of the newer ones are just an absolute mess. They stopped actually resembling anything a long time ago. - I swear...the last good Legendary designs were gen 3; Everything since then has been a nightmare. - Zacian and Zamazenta were honestly a refreshing return to form in this regard...but that was quickly undone with the next few waves.

Although I admit to liking Reshiram, overall, I agree. There are too many legendaries, and the I've generally disliked their designs since Gen 4. A big reason why I still probably will never buy Scarlet/Violet is that I really dislike the design of Koraidon and Miraidon, and unlike in the past, I can't just choose to ignore this Pokemon; I'm forced to use it as a means of getting around for the entire game. No thanks. I dislike when Gamefreak foists partner Pokemon on players with no alternative options.

I really dislike the design of Koraidon and Miraidon

You know, I felt exactly the same way, and I generally agree with your whole statement. When it comes to the big box Legendaries, I've only really vibed with Lugia and Ho-oh. Even the Weather Trio is just not really my thing. But I do like their designs and don't think they're bad at all. I tend to like things that are a bit more approachable (might not be the word I'm looking for) like Ho-oh. I do randomly love Kyurem though (not the fusions), and I'm a fan of the 6th gen trio.

However, I played Scarlet, and the actual gameplay and lore behind Koraidon, as well as how much personality it had in cutscenes, made me really, really like it a lot. I'm not trying to push you to play the games or anything, but if you eventually feel on the fence, I'd say to just go for it. I really didn't like their designs at all, but I genuinely like Koraidon now after playing through the story.

I gotta say I hate Miraidon and Koraidon. If they’re just been Area Zero encounters for Cyclizar, and then all the other encounters had more drastic changes like they do I feel like it would’ve made more sense.

They don’t even seem like “legendaries” to me when they’re just future and past versions of a basic Pokémon.

Like how have we gone from walking natural disasters and the gods of time and space to bikes
I don't dislike a lot of the newer Legendaries, but I think there are flat-out too many. My other major gripe when it comes to Legendaries is the lack of new "Mew clones." The cute 100 base stat across the board Mythical Pokemon. Victini was our last one, and those Pokemon have always been some of my favorites. I remember when X & Y came out, I was eagerly awaiting the reveal... waiting... waiting... waiting...

Still waiting...
It’s sad cause I feel like Gen 5 was the biggest step in the right direction and then cause people have bad taste everyone moaned about it and they never did anything like it again 😔

Next Tera Raid is Decidueye with a Flying tera
Begins March 17-19 and again March 24-26

I think I'll try once for it. Iron Hands might be a good choice. Still waiting for Delphox and Chesnaught though...

Edit: I'm post 1,000! I'll get myself another Gholdengo as a reward!

Gen 5 was the peak of Pokemon for me, especially B2W2. I'm not sure what the ScarVio DLC holds but I don't think it will be the same as the PWT, Battle Subway, PokeStar Studios, etc. Blueberry Academy focuses on battling so I expect it to be the Paldea "Battle Facility". The fact that you have to pay extra for the battle facility now is outrageous.

I would honestly be in favor of retconning a bunch of legendaries out of existence. - That is, to say...they make evolutions and pre-evolutions cannon for some of them, make them breedable, etc. - Just spin it in a way that scientists thought there was only one in existence...but they found more (this is something that happens in real life, btw).

-Right off the bat, I'd do this with Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion. - I never thought these deserved to be legendary designs. (They don't look any more special than something like Luxray or Pryroar, IMO). You could easily give these first and second evolutions and make them ordinary (albeit a bit rare).

-Kubfu and Urshifu also have no right being associated with the "legendary" moniker in any way. - I actually like these Pokemon a LOT...but, how are these different from any number of other mammalian-based Pokemon? Being a two-stage Pokemon with an evolution should count it out of the discussion right from the start. - I didn't even know they were considered "legendaries" until I started making this post. Seriously, who gave this the green-light?

-Keldeo? Fun design...for a normal Pokemon. Give it an evolution or two. (This one is probably the biggest head-scratcher for me). The thing literally screams "I want to evolve into something better."...and the mere existence of Keldeo becomes crazier when you consider that Glastrier and Spectrier are a thing. - Seriously...why did they do this?

-Meloetta. Literally looks like one of the Gardevoir types. Another one that feels like it wants a pre-evo and post-evo design. Just doesn't offer anything that says "I'm one of a kind and special." Not a single thing...

-Zeraora is a Lucario clone. To me, it feels like this Pokemon was meant to get the same treatment as Lucario...kind of like when Marill first debuted in the US, and people called it Pikablue, and it had this kind of mythical status for a while. I could feel the same being true for Zeraora. Heck...when Lucario first showed up, people treated it kind of like a legendary as well. I'd argue that Lucario would have had more business being a legendary than most. But since he isn't...I don't think Zeraora should be either.

-Melmetal and Meltan...again with the weird pre-evo legendaries. I honestly don't think Meltan even needs to exist. - If Melmetal existed without the Meltan pre-evo, I'd be accepting of its legendary status...but I really don't like the trend of Legendaries with worthless pre-evos. Also, this is another one that I would compare to something like Gimmieghoul and Gholdengo. Why is one of these a legendary, and one is a normal Pokemon you can obtain? Both require collecting a large number of items to evolve a weak base Pokemon into a more powerful one. They are the same concept and delivery of said concept...but one is special? Why?

-Zarude is the same as Passimian and Oranguru. I'll not hear otherwise. All three of these need pre-evos and post-evos. They should all fall in the same category. Nothing special about Zarude that should place it in a league of its own.

-Enamorus. I have honestly not seen this Dragon Ball Z villain until this exact moment in time. I am laughing.

Hard disagree on the Swords of Justice, Meloetta and Keldeo. Although I think Meloetta and Keldeo are mythical which I guess is technically different

Hard agree on the legends with pre evos though. I hate that they suddenly started adding them with Nebby. To me a legendary was always this giant force of nature and I feel like having them evolve takes away from that and makes them too like normal Pokémon… It’s just Pokémon trying to do too much again though I guess, They’re constantly trying to fix what isn’t broken

To be clear, I don't think any of the existing Legendaries shouldn't exist at all...I just think those ones don't need to be considered legendary for one reason or another. I actually enjoy Pokemon like Keldeo and Meloetta. They just seem somehow "unfinished" to me. And the so-called "swords of justice" feel like Johto legendary dog rip-offs without any further inspiration. Just never cared for their overall aesthetic. There's also something odd to me about their faces...like they have deer bodies and rabbit faces or something? Cat faces? Human faces? I don't know...I've always found it off-putting. Lol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway...had some more good luck with surprise trade last night. Got a shiny Lechonk, which I evolved into a shiny Oikologne. I'm about 99% sure it's legit. Unfortunately, it's also Japanese...which means I'll never really use it, since they won't let you edit the name to English...and it stays in Japanese even after it evolves. (Didn't foreign Pokemon used to obtain the English name after evo?).

Because Meltan and Melmetal's sole existence is on Pokemon Go. There are still pokemon players that still believe that they need to "gotta catch'em all" Having a Go-exclusive mon is way to get those folx to download Go. The whole "legendary" concept is diluted now and has no real meaning unfortunately. What exactly is a legendary? How is Heatran more legendary than Arceus or Necrozma? As we go through more and more gens this will be a bigger argument for all those favouring a hard reboot in the games.

If Enamorus had appeared in any of those early leaks, I would have immediately thought 'obvious fake'. As if you can't already tell that Enamorus was added later than the other trio, the love hearts and lipstick make it look like even more like a fakemon.

See...I don't even think there needs to be a hard reboot. - I honestly don't think it would be difficult to make a new game where they just retcon a bunch of things. (Which is funny...because it feels like Scarlet and Violet could have been the basis for that), but it obviously didn't pan out that way. I mean...you literally have a giant University and a access to a time machine. They could have easily been like "further research and experiments with the time machine have improved our understanding of A, B, and C." Lol

I just think we have had way too many Legendaries and Mythicals. I really think having a duo/trio/quartet that's somehow connected to the two or three "box" Legendaries, and then a single Mythical is solid. So basically 5-8 total. Gen 2 had it just right, although having a 3rd Version "box" Legendary would've been totally welcome instead of using Suicune for Crystal.

I really like all of the Legendaries from 3rd gen, but that was the start of it getting out of control. We have a duo and a trio of "secondary" Legendaries, a trio of primary "box" Legendaries, and two Mythicals.

-Enamorus. I have honestly not seen this Dragon Ball Z villain until this exact moment in time. I am laughing.

Enamorus is my least favorite Pokemon of all time, and that's saying a lot. It looks so, so, so bad and makes me irrationally upset that it's a real thing.

The problem with removing legendaries and mythicals from future games is... how would they promote the games and the story? The story has always been about the trainer defeating the league as well as catching/fighting a main legendary, and if that's not there, I don't really understand what the alternative would be. I do agree that there's too many though.

Also hard agree with Lancelot on the Swords of Justice being worthy legendaries. They really do seem like forces of nature and have earned that title.

Slightly staying on-topic, but I haven't played Scar/Vio in awhile. Kind of got bored with it, which is a first for me with Pokemon games. I'll eventually go back to finish my Violet file playthrough though.

I'm starting to really rake in shinies through surprise trade now...but they're all foreign or nicknamed, so I'll never use them. Got a shiny Froakie that I evolved into Greninja (which is an awesome shiny)...but it's in Korean. That said...I guess I would have decent shiny odds if I bred a Korean Froakie with a foreign Ditto...so I might attempt that.

Also got a shiny Quaxly...but it's nicknamed 'Sparkles'. So...yeah, not gonna make it on my team.

Guess I acquired a second shiny level 100 Ditto at some point too...which is funny, because I legit didn't notice that. So...my shiny count in Violet is up to 5 now. (2 Ditto, Oinkologne, Greninja, and Quaquaval)...all useless due to weird names. Lol. Still fun to add the shiny forms to my dex.

I'm definitely in the party where I think there's too many legendaries and therefore they don't feel special. However, at the same time, I like having multiple design choices to go with in case I find some of them lame lol.

My favorite Legendary and Mythical 'mons are Zeraora (Lucario is one of my favorite normal pokemon, and zeraora is just electric lucario), and Lugia. As for pokemon that shouldn't be legendaries and mythicals, my list goes like this:
Swords of Justice (especially Keldeo)
Cosmog
That one fish from paldea
All the ultra beasts (glorified legends and mythics tbh)

Just a heads up (and my apologies if this has already been mentioned and I missed it):

There's a new glitch which can wipe your save file with the most recent update. There are several news outlets covering it, plus a reddit post which documents what happened. Although not common, it seems to be linked to the postcard / Go compatibility with the latest update. Some people have said DLC pre-orders are also linked, but I don't think anyone really knows 100% what's causing it other than the postcard aspect.

Stuff like this is why we NEED Cloud saves on these games. I don't care about cloning - I can get any Pokemon I want, with any stats, shiny, with my own trainer ID, from people online if I wanted to cheat.

Yeah I saw that. I downloaded the DLC and nothing strange has happened so far. I've actually encountered less bugs than before I downloaded it. If the bug is from the postcards I would avoid using that feature until the TPC patches it. I also agree about the cloud saves. So many players put hours into the games and for them to lose EVERYTHING is unacceptable.

I don’t think it’s from the post cards. I sent over one to my Violet game before I knew about this bug going around and nothing has happened to my game. I haven’t bought the DLC yet which might mean this issue is connected to it and not Go.

I have bought the DLC already and have played once and nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary so far.
I probably won't be on again until the next Tera Raid event next week.

Zarude looks like version of Rillaboom after some time on meth.
